Funny You Should Ask by Elissa Sussman is $2.99! This one has been recommended on several podcasts we’ve done with other romance authors. I remember this being shelved as fiction in some bookstores, so I’ve also been hesitant to pick it up as a romance. Any thoughts?

Once a Princess by Johanna Lindsey is $1.99! This is book one in the Cardinia’s Royal Family series. Not sure how old school this is, but for some reason, the notion of a princess in a “rustic Mississippi tavern” tickles me.

“forced to dance for pleasure of others”, “regal birthright,” “magnificent golden-eyed devil,” “bold and brazen,” “vixen,” “VIRILE,” “sensuous conquest” oh this is going to be OLD SCHOOL old school
Swimming against the current on HUNT THE STARS. In spite of being well-written and edited, I had a difficult time connecting with the mains and the romance. I usually love SF romance (and there’s not enough of it), so I was disappointed to find myself disappointed. Small example: a great pet is introduced and made much of, but it plays zero part in the plot. Just a cute device. Doesn’t help (for me) that it’s in first person either, a style I do not care for in romances. The blurb was in third-person. Of course, YMMV.
FUNNY YOU SHOULD ASK is one of those books that is a cross between “women’s fiction” (whatever that is) and romance, but the romance is a key part of the story rather than being a subplot, though there is a lot of emphasis on personal growth over time. I personally like how you can really get into characters in this kind of fiction and also like celebrity romances and messed-up people and angst, so this was overall a win for me. I gave it a B+. YMMV.

FUNNY YOU SHOULD ASK was a C- for me. The book has two timelines (ten years ago and now) which eventually converge, but the problem with the set up is that the book is still in the reveal stage right up until the very end (my Kindle was telling me I had less than 10 minutes left in the book and the characters were still sharing key details and doing the “will they or won’t they??” dance).
I think it would have worked better if it had been much more tightly edited and then had an actual resolution. As it is, Chani, the heroine, basically has a reverse character arc in that she’s even more annoying at the end than she is at the beginning.

I recently re-read a Johanna Lindsey for the first time in nearly two decades – TENDER REBEL – and was astonished at how well it handled consent. It was handled well between the FMC/MMC, I should say, but the MMC for the next book … nooope. I was also amazed that the two leads didn’t even encounter each other until a quarter of the way through the book! I vaguely remember reading ONCE A PRINCESS in the 1990s and the only thing I remember is something about a pair of pants being a major plot point? I think? So I’m excited to find this on sale and see if it’s as insane as the blurb indicates.
I love HUNT THE STARS, but totally acknowledge @MariaK’s point about the non-Chekhov’s cat. Also, there’s a scene that probably deserves a CW for self-harm.
What I liked about Funny You Should Ask was the way it considered the problems a writer has trying to tell a true story while respecting the privacy of the people in her life.
DAUGHTER OF THE MOON GODDESS: I feel like I’ve seen more duologies in the last few years than before. I don’t know if it’s a little trend or just a quirk in what I happen to have seen. I’m so used to either 1 book or many that it feels weird.
ONCE A PRINCESS: What the heck, going for it. I’ve picked up a few of the old-schools that have been on sale lately. Not sure how I’ll feel about them, but at the least it’ll be educational.
