Links: Etymology, Mrs. Roper, & More

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Welcome back to Links! I definitely think this is one of the weirder titles I’ve picked.

I went to Patriots game on Sunday and boy, was it miserable. I’m talking both the weather and the actual gameplay. Sadly, we bought the tickets during the preseason.

In other news, I also think I’m done with my holiday shopping. Weirdly, my mom needs everyone’s lists by mid-October but then doesn’t do any shopping until late November or early December…which feels counterintuitive to asking so early. But what do I know?

Do you have any holiday shopping timelines? Do you go all-in on making or thrifting gifts? Do you buy throughout the year to beat the rush?

Wholesome Games has put together an “uplifting adventures” gaming bundle with proceeds benefitting Save the Children! The bundle is good for two more weeks and features seven. You can get all of them for pledging a donation of $20.

One of my coworkers went to a well-known restaurant in the New England area and was shocked to find it full of people dressed up like Mrs. Roper from Three’s Company. Apparently…it’s a thing! Have you heard of these?

Darlynne shared this link with us from The Bloggess! Thank you!

Nowhere Bookshop is turning a wild one-star review into merch.

Calling all word nerds! Are you follow EtymologyNerd on Instagram? Here is him notating the Waluigi sound.

Don’t forget to share what cool or interesting things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

I have not heard of the Mrs. Roper thing, but I love that! I watched Three’s Company was a kid, mostly b/c John Ritter was really good at falling down ad making silly faces. Everything else the show was about sailed right past me. But who wouldn’t want to grow up to be Mrs. Roper? A icon, for sure.
And a Matt Baume mention? Be still my heart!

  2. Star says:

When I started sixth grade, I solemnly informed my parents that my new teacher looked exactly like Jack the Ripper. Confusion reigned until they figured out I meant John Ritter, at which point it was usurped by hilarity.

I do a lot of thrift store shopping throughout the year for various gift giving occasions. This year, I’ve been making bookmarks for gifts. I will include a link to a couple. The first is for a friend who is a big fan of The New Yorker magazine; hers is for an imaginary book. The second one is a Christmas gift for my brother-in-law who is a Civil War buff; he will get the bookmark and the actual book it represents.

In a parallel life I would be a linguist, so I am excited to discover the EtymologyNerd. Thanks, as always, Amanda!

@Star, thank you, I needed that laugh!

I watched “Three’s Company” reruns every day as a kid in South Africa and boy did I understand nothing of what I was seeing, but it was funny all the same.

  6. Lilly says:

Mrs. Roper gatherings are a thing! From the New York Times about an event in my hometown, Providence, not long ago:

    @Lilly: That’s the exact article I linked. >.<

I love Nowhere Bookshop taking the lemon review and turning it into snarky lemonade. By now we all know that one-star reviews can actually end up with five-star outcomes.

  9. Maite says:

One – star reviews do tend to be informative.

  10. denise says:

I have heard of the Mrs. Roper thing.

  11. Katie says:

I buy things for people in advance, and then put reminders in my calendar to “look in the spot!”… and then future me gets the message and goes “????” and goes and looks and is quite pleased with past me.

    This has only happened once.

Normally I buy everything in a panic in the last 2 weeks of November, if I am making something I do give myself time, so that’s nice of myself…

I like to have all the gifts done early so I can just enjoy the holiday season.
