The Duke Who Didn’t

RECOMMENDED: The Duke Who Didn’t by Courtney Milan is 99c! Apologies if this one is a leftover sale from the weekend. Catherine gave this a squee grade:
The Duke Who Didn’t was always going to be a book that made me happy. Humour, food, and a gentle hero who just wants the heroine to be less stressed are a pretty good formula for getting onto my keeper shelf.
Miss Chloe Fong has plans for her life, lists for her days, and absolutely no time for nonsense. Three years ago, she told her childhood sweetheart that he could talk to her once he planned to be serious. He disappeared that very night.
Except now he’s back. Jeremy Wentworth, the Duke of Lansing, has returned to the tiny village he once visited with the hope of wooing Chloe. In his defense, it took him years of attempting to be serious to realize that the endeavor was incompatible with his personality.
All he has to do is convince Chloe to make room for a mischievous trickster in her life, then disclose that in all the years they’ve known each other, he’s failed to mention his real name, his title… and the minor fact that he owns her entire village.
Only one thing can go wrong: Everything.

The Belle of Belgrave Square by Mimi Matthews is $1.99! Lara reviewed this and gave it a B-:
If you’re looking for a Victorian historical with a heroine who is brave despite herself, in a book that won’t rip your heart out or drag you through rivers of angst and misery, then I think you’ll enjoy this romance.
A London heiress rides out to the wilds of the English countryside to honor a marriage of convenience with a mysterious and reclusive stranger.
Tall, dark, and dour, the notorious Captain Jasper Blunt was once hailed a military hero, but tales abound of his bastard children and his haunted estate in Yorkshire. What he requires now is a rich wife to ornament his isolated ruin, and he has his sights set on the enchanting Julia Wychwood.
For Julia, an incurable romantic cursed with a crippling social anxiety, navigating a London ballroom is absolute torture. The only time Julia feels any degree of confidence is when she’s on her horse. Unfortunately, a young lady can’t spend the whole of her life in the saddle, so Julia makes an impetuous decision to take her future by the reins—she proposes to Captain Blunt.
In exchange for her dowry and her hand, Jasper must promise to grant her freedom to do as she pleases. To ride—and to read—as much as she likes without masculine interference. He readily agrees to her conditions, with one provision of his own: Julia is forbidden from going into the tower rooms of his estate and snooping around his affairs. But the more she learns of the beastly former hero, the more intrigued she becomes…

READER RECOMMENDED: Game Changer by Rachel Reid $1.99! This is the first book in a series of the same name and is a M/M hockey romance. I know other books in the series have been reviewed on the site. Are you a fan? Do you have a favorite?
New York Admirals captain Scott Hunter takes his pregame rituals very seriously. In this case, it’s not just a lucky smoothie he’s craving—it’s the man who made it.
Pro hockey star Scott Hunter knows a good thing when he sees it. So, when a smoothie made by juice bar barista Kip Grady precedes Scott breaking his on-ice slump, he’s desperate to recreate the magic…and to get to know the sexy, funny guy behind the counter.
Kip knew there was more to Scott’s frequent visits than blended fruit, but he never let himself imagine being invited back to Scott’s penthouse. Or kissed with reckless abandon, never mind touched everywhere all at once. When it happens it’s red-hot, incredible and frequent, but also only on Scott’s terms and always behind his closed apartment doors.
Scott needs Kip in his life, but with playoff season approaching, the spotlight on him is suddenly brighter than ever. He can’t afford to do anything that might derail his career…like introducing the world to his boyfriend. Kip is ready to go all-in with Scott—but how much longer will he have to remain a secret?

Undiscovered by Anna Hackett is $2.99! This is the first book in the Treasure Hunter Security romantic suspense series. Several of the other books in the series are also on sale. I’ve enjoyed Hackett’s other books and am intrigued by the setup. I believe Hackett’s books were also mentioned in the comments of an Action Adventure Rec League.
One former Navy SEAL. One dedicated archeologist. One secret map to a fabulous lost oasis.
Finding undiscovered treasures is always daring, dangerous, and deadly. Perfect for the men of Treasure Hunter Security. Former Navy SEAL Declan Ward is haunted by the demons of his past and throws everything he has into his security business–Treasure Hunter Security. Dangerous archeological digs – no problem. Daring expeditions – sure thing. Museum security for invaluable exhibits – easy. But on a simple dig in the Egyptian desert, he collides with a stubborn, smart archeologist, Dr. Layne Rush, and together they get swept into a deadly treasure hunt for a mythical lost oasis. When an evil from his past reappears, Declan vows to do anything to protect Layne.
Dr. Layne Rush is dedicated to building a successful career–a promise to the parents she lost far too young. But when her dig is plagued by strange accidents, targeted by a lethal black market antiquities ring, and artifacts are stolen, she is forced to turn to Treasure Hunter Security, and to the tough, sexy, and too-used-to-giving-orders Declan. Soon her organized dig morphs into a wild treasure hunt across the desert dunes. Danger is hunting them every step of the way, and Layne and Declan must find a way to work together…to not only find the treasure but to survive.

I read The Marquis who mustn’t first and absolutely adored it and then decided to check out The Duke who Didn’t. Loved it just as much. The MC’s of both books are so likeable. Courtney Milan is always reliable .
Imho, GAME CHANGER is the weakest of the Game Changers series. I’m glad I read HEATED RIVALRY first, or I might not have continued the series. GAME CHANGER was adapted from Reid’s Captain America/Bucky Barnes fan-fic…and I think it shows. Her subsequent books are much more polished.
Belle of Belgrave Square was a favorite for me – I’m reading them out of order/is possible.
I think I read the Anna Hackett years ago/generally enjoyed, because the setup is one that would entertain me but hadn’t gone back to read the others in the series.
And I’m partway through the Courtney Milan 🙂
I realize that only leaves Game Changer – haven’t read it but have been meaning to start the series so I went and bought it.
THE BELLE OF BELGRAVE SQUARE is my pick here. Few people do psychologically creepy characters as well as Matthews (Julia’s parents are creeeeepy) which lends an interesting ambience and character arc to the story. I also enjoyed the historical details regarding marriages, mistaken identities, and the Crimean War. The ending felt a little rushed and pat given how much ground there was to cover emotionally (for a number of characters), but I really liked the MCs.
GAME CHANGER is not as strong as Reid’s other hockey romances, but a solid B/B-.
Probably a minority opinion, but THE DUKE WHO DIDN’T was a DNF for me. I found the heroine to be incredibly annoying and I could not get past the egregiousness of the hero lying by omission for NINE YEARS. I kept hoping it might improve, but it did not.
I’ve read both the Courtney Milan books and I have a preference for The Marquise Who Mustn’t, but I enjoyed both.
Free:
– So I Married a Werewolf (The Mating Game Book 1) by Kristen Strassel
$1.99:
– Wait for You by J. Lynn, Jennifer L. Armentrout
What DDD said.
I’ve reread all the books in the series a few times -except GAME CHANGER. I didn’t know it was originally fanfic, I just found it kinda bland. Definitely start with HEATED RIVALRY.
Thanks for the Hackett; that’s going into my increasingly large (and frequently re-read) “action archaeology” collection! This book and the new release/cover awe of Raiders of the Lost Heart reminded me of one of my all-time favourites: THE SMOKE HUNTER by Jacquelyn Benson. I went to start re-reading it on my kindle and was surprised to find I had 2 copies somehow? So I went sleuthing … The reason I have 2 copies is because of publishing shenanigans described thusly:
Characters and some plot elements of Empire of Shadows were previously included in The Smoke Hunter by Jacquelyn Benson, first released by Grand Central Publishing in 2016 and re-released by Vaughan Woods Publishing in 2020.
It will be the 1st book in a new series, with a prequel novella coming out in December 2023. I loved this book, so I really hope Ms Benson has found a home for this series and it will be successful.
Definitely agree with DDD and hng23. “Game Changer” is the weakest of the series. “Heated Rivalry” is my favorite, followed up by “The Long Game”. I mostly read the rest of the books for more Ilya, because he’s hilarious.
