  • Camp Damascus

    Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle

Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle is $2.99! This is Chuck’s first full-length novel. Carrie gave this a C+:

Even though I didn’t enjoy this book completely, I think the author (who I admit to shamelessly adoring in general) has a lot of potential in terms of this kind of full-length work. It has a big heart and a lot of arresting scenes (I won’t forget that fly vomit any time soon). It will work best for horror fans who don’t mind body horror, flies, worms, and surrealism. I will be reading the next full-length Chuck Tingle book for sure.

An Indie Next Pick • A Most Anticipated Book by GoodReads, LitHub, Paste, CrimeReads, Electric Lit, BookPage and more!

“A joyful, furious romp through dark places, Tingle proves he’s as good at fear as he is at love.” ―T. Kingfisher, bestselling author of What Moves the Dead

From beloved internet icon Chuck Tingle,
Camp Damascus is a searing and earnest horror debut about the demons the queer community faces in America, the price of keeping secrets, and finding the courage to burn it all down.

Welcome to Neverton, Montana: home to a God-fearing community with a heart of gold.

Nestled high up in the mountains is Camp Damascus, the self-proclaimed “most effective” gay conversion camp in the country. Here, a life free from sin awaits. But the secret behind that success is anything but holy.

And they’ll scare you straight to hell.

  • Ebony Gate

    Ebony Gate by Julia Vee

Ebony Gate by Julia Vee and Ken Rebelle is $2.99! This one is compared to John Wick, which made me instantly perk up. I know I’ll be buying this one for myself. Have any of you read this one?

Julia Vee and Ken Bebelle’s Ebony Gate is a female John Wick story with dragon magic set in contemporary San Francisco’s Chinatown.

Emiko Soong belongs to one of the eight premier magical families of the world. But Emiko never needed any magic. Because she is the Blade of the Soong Clan. Or was. Until she’s drenched in blood in the middle of a market in China, surrounded by bodies and the scent of blood and human waste as a lethal perfume.

The Butcher of Beijing now lives a quiet life in San Francisco, importing antiques. But when a shinigami, a god of death itself, calls in a family blood debt, Emiko must recover the Ebony Gate that holds back the hungry ghosts of the Yomi underworld. Or forfeit her soul as the anchor.

What’s a retired assassin to do but save the City By The Bay from an army of the dead?

  • The Witch is Back

The Witch is Back by Sophie Morgan

The Witch is Back by Sophie H. Morgan is $2.99! If you’re still on the witchy romance train, this might be worth picking up. We mentioned it in a previous Hide Your Wallet.

Love is a hex of a thing. Former childhood sweethearts fake a relationship in this charming, witchy romcom.

There’s nothing wrong with being a wallflower. Not to Emmaline Bluewater, anyway. Emma may have been born into witch society, but her days of trying to fit in where she doesn’t belong are over—they ended seven years ago, when the man she’d hoped to marry left town without a word. She’s much happier now, living a delightfully mundane human life in Chicago and running her bar, Toil and Trouble.

Until Bastian Truenote walks through the door and announces that he wants her back.

Bastian had his reasons for leaving—even if he can’t tell Emma what they are. Now, to win Emma’s heart, he’s got to face down an adorably goofy dog familiar, a best friend who’s all too eager to hit him with a carefully aimed hex, and a woman who’s far from the meek witch he remembers.

Magical contracts aren’t easily broken, but as far as Emma’s concerned, not even a marriage of convenience will have her falling under Bastian’s spell again…

  • Her Good Side

Her Good Side by Rebekah Weatherspoon

Her Good Side by Rebekah Weatherspoon is $1.99! I think this is Weatherspoon’s YA debut and was mentioned on a previous Hide Your Wallet. This year saw a lot of adult authors publishing YA and vice versa.

A swoony, heart-melting YA romance from beloved author Rebekah Weatherspoon about two awkward teens who decide to practice dating in order to be good at the real thing. Perfect for fans of Nicola Yoon and Jenny Han.

Sixteen-year-old Bethany Greene, though confident and self-assured, is what they call a late-bloomer. She’s never had a boyfriend, date, or first kiss. She’s determined to change that but after her crush turns her down cold for Homecoming—declaring her too inexperienced—and all her back-up ideas fall through, she cautiously agrees to go with her best friend’s boyfriend Jacob. A platonic date is better than no date, right? Until Saylor breaks up with said boyfriend.

Dumped twice in just two months, Jacob Yeun wonders if he’s the problem. After years hiding behind his camera and a shocking summer glow up, he wasn’t quite ready for all the attention or to be someone’s boyfriend. There are no guides for his particular circumstances, or for taking your ex’s best friend to the dance.

Why not make the best of an awkward situation? Bethany and Jacob decide to fake date for practice, building their confidence in matters of the heart.

And it works—guys are finally noticing Bethany. But things get complicated as their kissing sessions—for research of course!—start to feel real. This arrangement was supposed to help them in dating other people, but what if their perfect match is right in front of them?

  • Good Fortune

    Good Fortune by C.K. Chau

Good Fortune by C.K. Chau is $3.99! I mentioned this on a previous Get Rec’d! It’s a Pride & Prejudice reimagining set in New York City’s Chinatown. I love the brightness of the cover!

A whip-smart and charming debut novel that brilliantly reimagines Pride and Prejudice, set in contemporary Chinatown, exploring contemporary issues of class divides, family ties, cultural identity, and the pleasures and frustrations that come with falling in love.

When Elizabeth Chen’s ever-hustling realtor mother finally sells the beloved if derelict community center down the block, the new owners don’t look like typical New York City buyers. Brendan Lee and Darcy Wong are good Chinese boys with Hong Kong money. Clean-cut and charismatic, they say they are committed to cleaning up the neighborhood. To Elizabeth, that only means one thing: Darcy is looking to give the center an uptown makeover.

Elizabeth is determined to fight for community over profit, even if it means confronting the arrogant, uptight man every chance she gets. But where clever, cynical Elizabeth sees lemons, her mother sees lemonade. Eager to get Elizabeth and her other four daughters ahead in the world (and out of their crammed family apartment), Mrs. Chen takes every opportunity to keep her investors close. Closer than Elizabeth likes.

The more time they spend together, the more conflicted Elizabeth feels…until a shocking betrayal forces her to reconsider everything she thought she knew about love, trust, and the kind of person Darcy Wong really is.

  • Fake Dates and Mooncakes

Fake Dates and Mooncakes by Sher Lee

Fake Dates and Mooncakes by Sher Lee is $1.99! This is a YA romance with baking and fake dating. I love the cover design on this one, all the pastels, and cute little corgis.

Heartstopper meets Crazy Rich Asians in this heartfelt, joyful paperback original rom-com that follows an aspiring chef who discovers the recipe for love is more complicated than it seems when he starts fake-dating a handsome new customer.

Dylan Tang wants to win a Mid-Autumn Festival mooncake-making competition for teen chefs—in memory of his mom, and to bring much-needed publicity to his aunt’s struggling Chinese takeout in Brooklyn.

Enter Theo Somers: charming, wealthy, with a smile that makes Dylan’s stomach do backflips. AKA a distraction. Their worlds are sun-and-moon apart, but Theo keeps showing up. He even convinces Dylan to be his fake date at a family wedding in the Hamptons.

In Theo’s glittering world of pomp, privilege, and crazy rich drama, their romance is supposed to be just pretend . . . but Dylan finds himself falling for Theo. For real. Then Theo’s relatives reveal their true colors—but with the mooncake contest looming, Dylan can’t risk being sidetracked by rich-people problems.

Can Dylan save his family’s business and follow his heart—or will he fail to do both?

  1. Annie says:

Is it just me, or has Darcy been a gentrifier in more than one P&P modern retelling?

  2. Lara says:

Ebony Gate is a whole lot of fun. There’s action, there’s a whole subculture of magical families, there’s Asian representation, and you have your classic UF heroine who doesn’t need friends or a support system!…okay, maybe they’re nice to have around.

  3. drewbird says:

Fake dates and Mooncakes was adorable – both protagonists were very sweet, and it made me really want to try all the mooncakes that got made in the book…

  4. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Cate C. Wells’s THE STONE WOLF’S REJECTED MATE is currently free in the Kindle Store. It’s a new work—a shifter romance (novella length) set in the Five Packs universe.

  5. Musical Trees says:

I agree with @drewbird that FAKE DATES AND MOONCAKES is very sweet. The romance is fine, but my favorite part of the story was actually all the details about mooncakes. Very educational and also hunger-inducing!

Thanks @DiscoDollyDeb for the heads up! I’m a fan of Cate C. Wells’s shifter books.

  6. wingednike says:

Thanks @DiscoSollyDeb. This was not on my radar and will be great for my trip.

  7. Merle says:

I enjoyed Ebony Gate and plan to read the rest of the series. The heroine and the world building are excellent. I do not like the character being set up as love interest however– he’s an extremely wealthy “golden boy”, a type I despise. So if you also find that sort of character annoying, be warned. He’s not a major feature of the first book, at least.

  8. ReadKnitSnark says:

    Dear Publishers,

I looked at that offering of cartoon covers and noped right the fuck out without exploring any of them.
