  • A Reckless Match

A Reckless Match by Kate Bateman

A Reckless Match by Kate Bateman is $2.99! This is book one in a new series by Bateman and was released last September. To be honest, I think  Bateman is such an underrated author and I know Elyse and I enjoyed her previous series, Bow Street Bachelors.

The first in a new regency romance series about two feuding families and reunited childhood enemies whose hatred turns to love.

Maddie Montgomery’s family is in debt, and her hope rests on the rival Davies clan missing their yearly “pledge of goodwill,” ceding the land that separates their estates. With Maddie’s teenage nemesis, Gryffud “Gryff” Davies, Earl of Powys, away, hope is in reach.

But then, Gryff shows up and is stunned that the tomboy he once teased is now a woman. When Gryff and Maddie discover contraband on their land, they realize it can benefit both families. But they’ve also uncovered a dangerous plot, and they need to work together to get out alive. Soon, their hatred for each other starts to feel more like attraction.

Kate Bateman brings crackling banter, steamy romance, and a dash of adventure into the first book in the Ruthless Rivals series.

  • Duchess by Design

Duchess by Design by Maya Rodale

Duchess by Design by Maya Rodale is $1.99! This is the first book in the Gilded Age Girls Club series. Elyse read this one, but gave it a B-, as she didn’t believe the hero really deserved the heroine. Have you read this one? Do you agree with Elyse’s assessment?

In the first novel of Maya Rodale’s enthralling new series, an English duke vows to make an American seamstress his duchess…

In Gilded Age Manhattan, anything can happen…

Seeking a wealthy American bride who can save his family’s estate, Brandon Fiennes, the duke of Kingston, is a rogue determined to do the right thing. But his search for an heiress goes deliciously awry when an enchanting seamstress tumbles into his arms instead.

…and true love is always in fashion

Miss Adeline Black aspires to be a fashionable dressmaker—not a duchess—and not even an impossibly seductive duke will distract her. But Kingston makes an offer she can’t refuse: join him at society events to display her gowns and advise him on which heiresses are duchess material. It’s the perfect plan—as long as they resist temptation, avoid a scandal, and above all do not lose their hearts.

  • The Dark Days Club

The Dark Days Club by Alison Goodman

The Dark Days Club by Alison Goodman is $1.99! This is a YA book about demon-hunting in Regency England, which sounds all sorts of badass. Readers loved the heroine and all the other female characters in the book, but some felt like it was too much like Buffy the Vampire Slayer in a rather obvious way. Have you read this one?

London, April 1812. Eighteen-year-old Lady Helen Wrexhall is on the eve of her debut presentation to the Queen. Her life should be about gowns and dancing, and securing a suitable marriage. Instead, when one of her family’s housemaids goes missing, Lady Helen is drawn to the shadows of Regency London.

There, she finds William, the Earl of Carlston. He has noticed the disappearance, too, and is one of the few who can stop the perpetrators: a cabal of powerful demons that has infiltrated every level of society. But Lady Helen’s curiosity is the last thing Carlston wants—especially when he sees the searching intelligence behind her fluttering fan. Should Helen trust a man whose reputation is almost as black as his lingering eyes? And will her headstrong sense of justice lead them both into a death trap?

In The Dark Days Club, internationally best-selling author Alison Goodman introduces readers to a heroine who is just as remarkable as Eona—and yet again reinvents an establlished literary genre, making it her own.

  • The Apollo Murders

The Apollo Murders by Chris Hadfield

The Apollo Murders by Chris Hadfield is $3.99! I recommended this sci-fi thriller in an edition of Get Rec’d. If you like your sci-fi rooted in realism, this might be a great option with a central mystery.

The far side of the Moon, 1973. Three astronauts are trapped in a tiny Apollo module, and one of them has murder on the mind . . .

From internationally bestselling astronaut Chris Hadfield comes an exceptional Cold War thriller from the dark heart of the Space Race. As Russian and American crews sprint for a secret bounty hidden away on the Moon’s surface, old rivalries blossom and the political stakes are stretched to breaking point back on Earth. Houston flight controller Kazimieras ‘Kaz’ Zemeckis must do all he can to keep the NASA crew together, while staying one step ahead of his Soviet rivals. But not everyone on board Apollo 18 is quite who they appear to be.

Full of the fascinating technical detail that fans of The Martian loved, and reminiscent of the thrilling claustrophobia, twists and tension of The Hunt for Red October, The Apollo Murders puts you right there in the moment, a quarter of a million miles from home – a quarter of a million miles from help. Experience the fierce G-forces of launch, the frozen loneliness of Space and the fear of holding on to the outside of a spacecraft orbiting the Earth at 17,000 miles per hour, as told by a former Commander of the International Space Station who has done all of those things in real life.

Strap in and count down for the ride of a lifetime.

I’d give Dark Days a B-. I liked the world build and Helen. I didn’t like the hero or the amount of repetition of various phrases. I forget the weird term for the villains, but they said it over and over.

  2. Darlynne says:

Did someone say THE MARTIAN? A similarity I can’t ignore, off to investigate THE APOLLO MURDERS further. Thanks!

  4. Jen says:

I ADORE The Dark Days Club series (especially book two!). I think it’s a great combination of historical setting, since it really delves into Regency society, and supernatural demon slaying, with a romance that I totally ate up, though it is slow to build and really kicks into another gear in the second book. It’s not for everyone, but it’s definitely for me. The audio is fantastic as well.

  5. Lisa F says:

The Bateman’s my pick here; it’s fantastic. Also liked Duchess by Design.
