I’ve Got My Duke to Keep Me Warm

I’ve Got My Duke to Keep Me Warm by Kelly Bowen is $1.99! This is the first book in the Lords of Worth series and it was mentioned in a guest post on “feminist favorites.” Bowen has recently released a couple historical fictions, but I’d love to see a return to historical romance.
WHERE SECRETS SMOLDER . . .
Calm. Cool. Collected. Gisele Whitby has perfected the art of illusion-her survival, after all, has depended upon it. Years ago, to escape an abusive husband, Gisele “disappeared.” Now she must risk revealing her new identity to save another innocent girl from the same fate. But she needs a daring man for her scheme, and the rogue in question shows a remarkable talent . . . for shattering Gisele’s carefully constructed facade and igniting her deepest desires.
. . . PASSION IGNITES
This isn’t the first time Jamie Montcrief has awakened naked and confused from a night of drinking. It is, however, the first time a stunningly beautiful woman offers him payment afterward. Gisele has a business proposition for him, a mission involving cunning thievery and a brazen rescue. How can he say no to a plot this dangerous . . . and a woman this delectable?

She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan is $2.99! This is an epic fantasy and the first book in a duology. It reimagines the founding of the Ming Dynasty. Definitely check trigger and content warnings for this one as I heard it can be pretty dark.
Mulan meets The Song of Achilles in Shelley Parker-Chan’s She Who Became the Sun, a bold, queer, and lyrical reimagining of the rise of the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty from an amazing new voice in literary fantasy.
To possess the Mandate of Heaven, the female monk Zhu will do anything.
“I refuse to be nothing…”
In a famine-stricken village on a dusty yellow plain, two children are given two fates. A boy, greatness. A girl, nothingness…
In 1345, China lies under harsh Mongol rule. For the starving peasants of the Central Plains, greatness is something found only in stories. When the Zhu family’s eighth-born son, Zhu Chongba, is given a fate of greatness, everyone is mystified as to how it will come to pass. The fate of nothingness received by the family’s clever and capable second daughter, on the other hand, is only as expected.
When a bandit attack orphans the two children, though, it is Zhu Chongba who succumbs to despair and dies. Desperate to escape her own fated death, the girl uses her brother’s identity to enter a monastery as a young male novice. There, propelled by her burning desire to survive, Zhu learns she is capable of doing whatever it takes, no matter how callous, to stay hidden from her fate.
After her sanctuary is destroyed for supporting the rebellion against Mongol rule, Zhu takes the chance to claim another future altogether: her brother’s abandoned greatness.

Two Parts Sugar, One Part Murder by Valerie Burns is $2.99! This is book one in the Baker Street Mystery series. It’s a small town, fish out of water mystery with a big, goofy dog. Right now, the sale is only valid at Amazon, but may we’ll get some price-matching later.
In a brand-new culinary cozy series with a fresh edge and a delightful small-town setting, the acclaimed author introduces Maddy Montgomery, a social media expert who’s #StartingOver in small town Michigan after inheriting her great-aunt’s bakery…and a 200-pound English Mastiff named Baby.
When Maddy Montgomery’s groom is a no-show to their livestream wedding, it’s a disaster that no amount of filtering can fix. But a surprise inheritance offers a chance to regroup and rebrand—as long as Maddy is willing to live in her late, great Aunt Octavia’s house in New Bison, Michigan, for a year, running her bakery and caring for a 200-pound English Mastiff named Baby.
Maddy doesn’t bake, and her Louboutins aren’t made for walking giant dogs around Lake Michigan, but the locals are friendly and the scenery is beautiful. With help from her aunt’s loyal friends, aka The Baker Street Irregulars, Maddy feels ready to tackle any challenge, including Octavia’s award-winning cake recipes. That is, until New Bison’s mayor is fatally stabbed, and Maddy’s fingerprints are found on the knife . . .
Something strange is going on in New Bison. It seems Aunt Octavia had her suspicions too. But Maddy’s going to need a whole lot more than a trending hashtag to save her reputation—and her life.

– Sherilee Gray’s BEG FOR YOU (Rocktown Ink 1)
– LEAST LIKELY TWO by Jill Westwood
I really enjoyed SHE WHO BECAME THE SUN right up until the point (about three quarters of the way through) where the dead bodies just started piling up left and right—it went from political intrigue into a bloodbath. That said, it’s immersive and very queer and I loved visiting the time period and culture and the women in the story. (Also, pretty sure it’s the first book I’ve read with fisting which definitely came as a surprise!)
Naima Simone’s SIN & INK (Sweetest Taboo 1) is $.99
New Bison, Michigan: made me snort my Dr. Pepper; we spent a lot of time in New Buffalo in bygone summers. And my library has the digital book in the always-available section. Throw in a big slobbery dog and I’m there.
Also agree with @Fashionably Evil re: SWBtS. Bloodbath is a good word and still I thought it was an excellent book.

Oh my gosh! I had no idea – thank you!
These are all great. The most amusing note I have is that there is no Duke in “I’ve Got My Duke to Keep Me Warm”
I was going to make the same comment as Lisa about I’VE GOT MY DUKE TO KEEP ME WARM. It’s clear that the Marketing Department decreed that romances must have a duke in the title, even if the hero is only duke adjacent. The hero’s parents weren’t yet married when he was born so he’s technically a bastard and ineligible for the title, which is held by a younger brother born after the parents married. I read the book a few years ago so don’t remember it well, but do recall that I liked the hero and heroine but found the villain over the top.
The title of I’ve Got My Duke to Keep Me Warm confused me so much because through the entire book I was waiting for the Plot Twist that his parents has a Secret Marriage that no one knew about or some other Twist of Fate where he would indeed become the duke.
