The Dry
RECOMMENDED: The Dry by Jane Harper is $2.99! I read this after Elyse’s review and found it to be a quick read. Elyse really enjoyed this mystery and gave it an A in a Lightning Review, there is a content warning though:
The Dry is an excellent, solid mystery. I loved the setting of a rural community struggling through a drought that sets everyone on edge and amplifies tensions.
A small town hides big secrets in this atmospheric, page-turning debut mystery by an award-winning new author.
After getting a note demanding his presence, Federal Agent Aaron Falk arrives in his hometown for the first time in decades to attend the funeral of his best friend, Luke. Twenty years ago when Falk was accused of murder, Luke was his alibi. Falk and his father fled under a cloud of suspicion, saved from prosecution only because of Luke’s steadfast claim that the boys had been together at the time of the crime. But now more than one person knows they didn’t tell the truth back then, and Luke is dead.
Amid the worst drought in a century, Falk and the local detective question what really happened to Luke. As Falk reluctantly investigates to see if there’s more to Luke’s death than there seems to be, long-buried mysteries resurface, as do the lies that have haunted them. And Falk will find that small towns have always hidden big secrets.

A Duel with the Vampire Lord
A Duel with the Vampire Lord by Elise Kova is 99c! This is book three in the Married to Magic series and I believe Elyse mentioned this on Hide Your Wallet. I love these covers and especially the short-haired heroine here.
On the night of the blood moon, the Vampire Lord must die.
Floriane’s position as the forge maiden of Hunter’s Hamlet is one of reverence, for it is her skill that arms and protects the vampire hunters. She knows her place and is a faithful servant to the Master Hunter and her community… until the night of the blood moon. Until her brother is dying at the hands of the Vampire Lord Ruvan.
Wanting to defend her home at all costs, Floriane fights the vampire lord, ready to give her life if it means taking his. But Ruvan doesn’t want to take her life… he wants her.
Kidnapped and brought to the vampire castle, Floriane is now blood sworn to the vampire lord. She is bound in mind and body to her worst enemy. But Ruvan isn’t the fiend she thought he was. She learns the truth of the vampires: They are not mindless monsters, but a proud people, twisted and tortured by an ancient curse.
Ruvan believes that Floriane might be the key to ending his people’s suffering. All Floriane wants is to defend her home. Loyalties are tested and the lines between truth and lie, hate and passion, are blurred.
When her dagger is at his chest, will she be able to take the heart of the man who has claimed hers?
A darkly-reimagined Snow White meets inspiration from Beauty and the Beast in an epic fantasy world of hunters, vampires, and curses that run deeper than blood. This stand alone is complete with a “happily ever after” ending. It’s perfect for fantasy romance fans looking for just the right amount of steam and their next slow-burn and swoon worthy, enemies to lovers story.
While it is set in the Married to Magic universe, readers can start with this book.

Devolution
Devolution by Max Brooks is $2.99! Carrie was reading this one on a previous Whatcha Reading. It’s a mix of monster horror and thriller, told through epistolary storytelling. Definitely curious about this one!

Love Her or Lose Her
Love Her or Lose Her by Tessa Bailey is $1.99! Carrie read this one and gave it a B-:
This book made me want to root for Rosie and Dominic, but I see trouble ahead for them. Too many elephants are left in the room; I don’t think this couple’s problems are over. I’m rooting for them, but not sold on their HEA
New York Times bestselling author Tessa Bailey returns with a unique, sexy romantic comedy about a young married couple whose rocky relationship needs a serious renovation.
Rosie and Dominic Vega are the perfect couple: high school sweethearts, best friends, madly in love. Well, they used to be anyway. Now Rosie’s lucky to get a caveman grunt from the ex-soldier every time she walks in the door. Dom is faithful and a great provider, but the man she fell in love with ten years ago is nowhere to be found. When her girlfriends encourage Rosie to demand more out of life and pursue her dream of opening a restaurant, she decides to demand more out of love, too. Three words: marriage boot camp.
Never in a million years did Rosie believe her stoic, too-manly-to-emote husband would actually agree to relationship rehab with a weed-smoking hippy. Dom talking about feelings? Sitting on pillows? Communing with nature? Learning love languages? Nope. But to her surprise, he’s all in, and it forces her to admit her own role in their cracked foundation. As they complete one ridiculous—yet surprisingly helpful—assignment after another, their remodeled relationship gets stronger than ever. Except just as they’re getting back on track, Rosie discovers Dom has a secret… and it could demolish everything.

Love her or Leave her is great!
The Dry is excellent. It’s the first of three – I’d read the second one, Force of Nature – first and it also was excellent. I haven’t read the third yet, but I expect it will also be good.
Devolution was good, but scary.
Jane Harper is an auto buy for me. The third on, Exile, was terrific. But hands down, the Lost Man is in my top books of all time. I listened to them but the Aussie accent was too thick for my husband.
I’m seeing Love Her or Lose Her as being $11.49, wonder if I missed the sale price?
A MERRY LITTLE MEET CUTE by Julie Murphy and Sierra Simone is on sale for $1.99 until the 24th.
@Maureen, same, alas.
Guess I’m in the minority here. I found The Dry slow, somewhat depressing, and the ending not fully satisfying. The writing is good but the story not to my taste.
A word of warning for some like me, I checked a sample and Duel with the Vampire Lord is first-person.
Also recommend checking out the movie adaptation of the Dry with Eric Bana. The second movie Force of Nature is being released in August.
Kilby Blades’ LOOKS GOOD ON PAPER is $.99 for the next 24 hours…
