  • Wild Rain

    Wild Rain by Beverly Jenkins

RECOMMENDED: Wild Rain by Beverly Jenkins is $1.99! Catherine wrote a Lightning Review for this one and gave it a B+:

I enjoyed this story a lot. It contains many of the elements that feel like a traditional Western to me – scenes of blizzards and horse-breaking, confrontations in the local saloon, slick shysters from out East come to take advantage of the locals – but the central characters buck the stereotypes in numerous ways.

The second novel in USA Today bestselling author Beverly Jenkins’ compelling new Women Who Dare series follows a female rancher in Wyoming after the Civil War.

A reporter has come to Wyoming to do a story on doctors for his Black newspaper back east. He thinks Colton Lee will be an interesting subject…until he meets Colton’s sister, Spring. She runs her own ranch, wears denim pants instead of dresses, and is the most fascinating woman he’s ever met.

But Spring, who has overcome a raucous and scandalous past, isn’t looking for, nor does she want, love. As their attraction grows, will their differences come between them or unite them for an everlasting love?

  • The Boyfriend Project

The Boyfriend Project by Farrah Rochon

The Boyfriend Project by Farrah Rochon is $1.99! Maya reviewed this one and wasn’t quite sold on the hero. Have you read this one? What’d you think about this one compared to Rochon’s follow ups?

USA Today bestselling author Farrah Rochon launches a new series about three young women who become friends when the live Tweeting of a disastrous date leads them to discover they’ve all been duped by the same man.

Samiah Brooks never thought she would be “that” girl. But a live tweet of a horrific date just revealed the painful truth: she’s been catfished by a three-timing jerk of a boyfriend. Suddenly Samiah-along with his two other “girlfriends,” London and Taylor — have gone viral online. Now the three new besties are making a pact to spend the next six months investing in themselves. No men, no dating, and no worrying about their relationship status . . .

For once Samiah is putting herself first, and that includes finally developing the app she’s always dreamed of creating. Which is the exact moment she meets the deliciously sexy, honey-eyed Daniel Collins at work. What are the chances? When it comes to love, there’s no such thing as a coincidence. But is Daniel really boyfriend material or is he maybe just a little too good to be true?

  • Suburban Hell

    Suburban Hell by Maureen Kilmer

Suburban Hell by Maureen Kilmer is $1.99! Apologies if this is a leftover deal from the weekend. I mentioned this one on a previous Hide Your Wallet and seems great for people who want a mix of horror and humor.

Bad Moms meets My Best Friend’s Exorcism in this lite-horror-comedy about a group of women in the Chicago ‘burbs, whose cul-de-sac gets a new neighbor: a demon.

Amy Foster considers herself lucky. After she left the city and went full minivan, she found her place quickly with neighbors Liz, Jess, and Melissa, together snarking the “Mom Mafia” from the outskirts of the PTA mom crowd. So, one night during their monthly wine get-together, the newfound crew concoct a plan for a clubhouse She Shed in Liz’s backyard – the perfect space for just them, no spouses or kids allowed.

But the night after they christen the space with a ceremonial drink, things start to feel…off. What they didn’t expect was for Liz’s little home improvement project to release a demonic force that turns their quiet suburban enclave into something out of a nightmare. And that’s before the Homeowners’ Association gets wind of it.

Just as Liz is turned into a creepy doll face overnight, cases of haunting activity around the neighborhood intensify, and even the calmest moms can’t justify the strange burn marks, self-moving dolls, and horrible smells surrounding their possessed friend, Liz. Together, Amy, Jess, and Melissa must fight back the evil spirit to save Liz and the neighborhood…before the suburbs go completely to hell. But at least they don’t have to deal with the PTA, right?

  • The Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics

The Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics by Olivia Waite

RECOMMENDED: The Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics by Olivia Waite is $1.99! Carrie read this one and gave it a B+:

The book is evocative, interesting, and full of competence porn, fashion, art, and intelligent people saying intelligent things. Anyone who doesn’t mind a slow pace will love this.

As Lucy Muchelney watches her ex-lover’s sham of a wedding, she wishes herself anywhere else. It isn’t until she finds a letter from the Countess of Moth, looking for someone to translate a groundbreaking French astronomy text, that she knows where to go. Showing up at the Countess’ London home, she hoped to find a challenge, not a woman who takes her breath away.

Catherine St Day looks forward to a quiet widowhood once her late husband’s scientific legacy is fulfilled. She expected to hand off the translation and wash her hands of the project—instead, she is intrigued by the young woman who turns up at her door, begging to be allowed to do the work, and she agrees to let Lucy stay. But as Catherine finds herself longing for Lucy, everything she believes about herself and her life is tested.

While Lucy spends her days interpreting the complicated French text, she spends her nights falling in love with the alluring Catherine. But sabotage and old wounds threaten to sever the threads that bind them. Can Lucy and Catherine find the strength to stay together or are they doomed to be star-crossed lovers?

I enjoyed Suburban Hell! It was a little uneven but I thought it was a lot of fun.

  2. Penny says:

FWIW I loved A Ladies Guide to Celestial Mechanics. It was slow, but felt like in a way that gave the character development room to breathe. I also read it at the height of my brief flirtation with math as an old person going back to school to get their first undergrad. The younger MC knows who she is and what she wants, but the older MC was so smothered by her place and the expectations placed on her, the sh*tty person she married… I was really invested in her arc. generally good secondary charachters. Also loved the second book in the series, The Care and Feeding of Waspish Widows.

HUGE audible sale until June 9. Some are 85% off. Good prices for most of the T. Kingfisher Paladin series. The Murderbot pre-order(System Collapse)is around $6 on sale and Captive Prince as well. Probably worth checking out

  6. Lisa F says:

Ladies’ Guide and Wild Rain were my favorite romances of the year the years they came out, snag them if you can grab them!

  7. FashionablyEvil says:

THE BOYFRIEND PROJECT was good but not great. It’s a fun premise and I liked the setting, but sometimes the setting overtook the story. (There’s a ton of detail about the main character’s work place and about all the places in Austin where the characters live and go, which is fine, but, you know, sometimes the characters can just go to a park without it being specifically named?) Also, the ending felt pretty rushed and I felt like the hero’s betrayal of the heroine’s trust was insufficiently addressed. It was still fun, but with some drawbacks.

LADY’S GUIDE TO CELESTIAL MECHANICS was great (and f/f is usually not my jam.)

  8. Dhana says:

Oh gotta grab the Beverly Jenkins one – good looking out!
