  • Our Crooked Hearts

Our Crooked Hearts by Melissa Albert

RECOMMENDED: Our Crooked Hearts by Melissa Albert is $3.99! Elyse gave this one an A:

Don’t start Our Crooked Hearts unless you have time to finish it.

It’s such a wonderful, spooky, thrilling story that it’s hard to put down. It’s a book about imperfect parents, teenage dissatisfaction, and female empowerment and it unfolds beautifully. It’s also a remarkable ghost story.

    THE SUBURBS, RIGHT NOW . . .

Seventeen-year-old Ivy’s summer break kicks off with an accident, a punishment, and a mystery: a stranger whose appearance in the middle of the road, in the middle of the night, heralds a string of increasingly unsettling events. As the days pass, Ivy grapples with eerie offerings, corroded memories, and a secret she’s always known—that there’s more to her mother than meets the eye.

    THE CITY, BACK THEN . . .

Dana has always been perceptive. And the summer she turns sixteen, with the help of her best friend and an ambitious older girl, her gifts bloom into a heady fling with the supernatural, set in a city of magical possibilities and secret mystics. As the trio’s aspirations darken, they find themselves speeding toward a violent breaking point.

Years after it began, Ivy and Dana’s shared story will come down to a reckoning among a daughter, a mother, and the dark forces they never should’ve messed with.

  • A Proposal They Can’t Refuse

A Proposal They Can’t Refuse by Natalie Caña

A Proposal They Can’t Refuse by Natalie Caña is $2.99! This was Caña’s debut and features rivals to lovers and fake dating. The second book in the series is out this summer. Lots of good food and drink descriptions!

Natalie Caña turns up the heat, humor and heart in this debut rom-com about a Puerto Rican chef and an Irish American whiskey distiller forced into a fake engagement by their scheming octogenarian grandfathers.

Kamilah Vega is desperate to convince her family to update their Puerto Rican restaurant and enter it into the Fall Foodie Tour. With the gentrification of their Chicago neighborhood, it’s the only way to save the place. The fly in her mofongo–her blackmailing abuelo says if she wants to change anything in his restaurant, she’ll have to marry the one man she can’t stand: his best friend’s grandson.

Liam Kane spent a decade working to turn his family’s distillery into a contender. Now he and his grandfather are on the verge of winning a national competition. Then Granda hits him with a one-two punch: he has cancer and he has his heart set on seeing Liam married before it’s too late. And Granda knows just the girl…Kamilah Vega.

If they refuse, their grandfathers will sell the building that houses both their businesses. With their futures on the line, Kamilah and Liam plan to outfox the devious duo, faking an engagement until they both get what they want. But soon, they find themselves tangled up in more than either of them bargained for.

  • The Mystery of Mrs. Christie

The Mystery of Mrs. Christie by Marie Benedict

The Mystery of Mrs. Christie by Marie Benedict is $2.99! This is a mystery mixed with historical fiction based on real events in Agatha Christie’s life. Elyse gave this one a C:

The Mystery of Mrs. Christie isn’t a bad book by any means. It just lacked an element of suspense for me because I was already familiar with the case and I wasn’t in the mood to read about Archie Christie being an awful, entitled dude. I will admit that the ending is entirely satisfying though, if you have the fortitude to endure the Archie sections. I think readers unfamiliar with the case will ultimately enjoy it more.

The New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Only Woman in the Room returns with a thrilling reconstruction of one of the most notorious events in literary history: Agatha Christie’s mysterious 11-day disappearance in 1926.

In December 1926, Agatha Christie goes missing. Investigators find her empty car on the edge of a deep, gloomy pond, the only clues some tire tracks nearby and a fur coat left in the car—strange for a frigid night. Her World War I veteran husband and her daughter have no knowledge of her whereabouts, and England unleashes an unprecedented manhunt to find the up-and-coming mystery author. Eleven days later, she reappears, just as mysteriously as she disappeared, claiming amnesia and providing no explanations for her time away.

The puzzle of those missing eleven days has persisted. With her trademark historical fiction exploration into the shadows of the past, acclaimed author Marie Benedict brings us into the world of Agatha Christie, imagining why such a brilliant woman would find herself at the center of such murky historical mysteries.

What is real, and what is mystery? What role did her unfaithful husband play, and what was he not telling investigators?

Agatha Christie novels have withstood the test of time, due in no small part to Christie’s masterful storytelling and clever mind that may never be matched, but Agatha Christie’s untold history offers perhaps her greatest mystery of all.

Fans of The Secrets We KeptThe Lions of Fifth Avenue, and The Alice Network will enjoy this riveting saga of literary history, suspense, and love gone wrong.

Don’t miss these four pulse-pounding, edge of your seat, steamy military thrillers! Get the first three books in the series—all named to Kirkus Reviews’ Best Books of the Year—plus a never-before-published novella!

The adventure heats up in TINDERBOX when an archaeologist races across the desert to seek protection at a US military base, and is saved from an explosion by a solder who kindles a different kind of fire. Temperatures rise further in CATALYST, when an American aid worker is abducted and her only hope for rescue is the Green Beret she once wronged. In FIRESTORM, a CIA operator and Special Forces soldier set off to stop a coup and find a conspiracy that could ignite all of Africa, while in INFERNO, government relations have reached the flashpoint, and a diplomat and Green Beret must work together to douse the flames.

    TINDERBOX
In the volatile tinderbox of the Horn of Africa, Morgan Adler has made the paleoanthropological find of a lifetime. The discovery brings her to the attention of a warlord eager to claim both Morgan and the fossils, forcing her to make a desperate dash to the nearby US military base to beg for protection.

Master Sergeant Pax Blanchard has orders to intercept Dr. Adler before she reaches the base, and in so doing saves her life. After a harrowing afternoon he safely delivers her to his commanders, only to find his responsibilities toward protecting the obstinate archaeologist have only just begun.

Morgan and Pax are forced to work together in the Djiboutian desert heat, but it is the fire that ignites between them that threatens to combust them both. For the Green Beret, involvement with the woman he must protect is a threat to his career, while for the archaeologist, the soldier is everything she never wanted but somehow can’t resist. When Morgan uncovers a mystery surrounding Djibouti’s most scarce and vital resource, the danger to her reaches the flashpoint. For Pax, protecting her is no longer a matter of following orders, and he’ll risk everything to bring her back alive.

    CATALYST
When a food storage depot in famine-struck South Sudan is torched, American aid worker Brie Stewart flees, only to land in a market where she’s the next item up for auction. Is the attack on the aid facility another assault upon the war-torn fledgling democracy, or has her family set her up as a pawn in their quest for oil rights?

Chief Warrant Officer Sebastian Ford crossed paths with Brie years ago when she was a shill for her family’s company, pushing a pipeline that threatened his tribe’s land. Determined to lead the rescue operation to save her, he won’t let her abduction—or the attraction that flares between them—get in the way of settling their unfinished business.

The Green Beret’s skills are put to the test in the flooded grasslands of South Sudan, where they must battle nature and dangerous factions who are after more than oil. Bastian and Brie put their hearts on the line as they find themselves embroiled in a conflict that extends beyond country and continent. Together they must douse the spark before it reaches the flashpoint and engulfs everything they hold dear.

    FIRESTORM
CIA covert operator Savannah James is after intel on a potential coup in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but she needs a partner fluent in Lingala to infiltrate the organization. Sergeant First Class Cassius Callahan is the perfect choice, except he doesn’t like her very much. He doesn’t trust her, either, despite the sparks that flare between them, fierce and hot. Still, he accepts the assignment even though their cover requires Savvy to pose as his mistress.

They enter battle-worn Congo to expose the financing for the coup. A trail of cobalt, gold, and diamonds leads them into the heart of a jungle in which everyone is desperate to find the mother lode of ore and gems. Betrayal stalks them as they follow the money, but Savvy will stop at nothing to bring down the would-be dictator before he can ignite a firestorm that will engulf all of Africa.

Deep in the sultry rainforest, spy and Green Beret forge a relationship more precious than diamonds, but Cal knows Savvy is willing to sacrifice anything—or anyone—to complete her mission. As they near the flashpoint, Cal will have to save her from the greatest threat of all: herself.

    INFERNO
US Embassy Officer Kaylea Halpert needs a date for a black tie event at a dangerous foreign national’s lavish home. Preferably someone with brains and brawn who can watch her back. Special Forces Sergeant Carlos Espinosa is more than happy to escort the beautiful, brilliant diplomat—who just might be a CIA case officer—to the party. Their night together only gets hotter when he discovers Kaylea burns for him too.

Date night in Djibouti turns deadly when foreign agents target the couple. But who is the intended victim, the covert operator or the Green Beret? As Carlos and Kaylea use their combined skills to escape their captors, they uncover treachery that could ignite relations between the US and Djibouti—already at a flashpoint—and trigger an inferno.

  1. Laurel says:

Interesting new covers on the Flashpoint series. I have read them all, and while I thought the first book was the best, I did enjoy the rest of them – all solid B reads. Four books for $2.99 is a good deal.

  2. Tam says:

I really, really liked OUR CROOKED HEARTS, although I thought I wouldn’t from the description. One of the best YA reads of the last couple of years.

  3. Dhana says:

Curious about the flashpoint series but also concerned about whether these are “white westerners good/sophisticated/smart main characters and African natives bad/savage/simple background filler” kinds of stories (bc unfortunately those kinds of stories still get a lot of traction) or if there’s more nuance going on here. I dont see any sbtb reviews- can anyone who’s read them share their thoughts?

  4. LML says:

@Dhana, About 18 months ago I read the first two in this series and a handful from Grant’s other series. I recall that the bad guys are _bad_ but other people within the same country are characterized as resourceful, helpful, smart, and kind, depending on the story.

  5. Lauren says:

Was on the fence about picking up the Flashpoint series until I got to the phrase “date night in Djibouti.” Sold! The teen-aged Model UN nerd inside me must read this book!

  6. OuchOuchOuch says:

@Dhana, seconding you here. FLASHPOINT can get lost. I really, desperately hate it when Africa’s constant unrest and suffering – which is partly, perhaps largely, the outcome of exploitation and fuckery by European and American entities – is used as background for white people to rescue everyone and get laid.

That’s _before_ I get into the messy, messy subject of WHY the CIA/US covert ops/whichever bunch of bodybuilders with guns it is this time are here in the first place (spoiler: it’s not because they’re nice and want the best for everybody).
