A Desperate Fortune
A Desperate Fortune by Susanna Kearsley is $2.99! Like Kearsley’s other books, it has strong romantic elements and dual timelines. Many readers loved Sara, a woman who is on the Autism spectrum and takes a job as a codebreaker, but other readers found the book took a while to get going. Are you a Kearsley fan?
The highly anticipated, brand-new timeslip romance from New York Times bestselling author Susanna Kearsley
For nearly 300 years, the mysterious journal of Jacobite exile Mary Dundas has lain unread-its secrets safe from prying eyes. Now, amateur codebreaker Sara Thomas has been hired by a once-famous historian to crack the journal’s cipher.
But when she arrives in Paris, Sara finds herself besieged by complications from all sides: the journal’s reclusive owner, her charming Parisian neighbor, and Mary, whose journal doesn’t hold the secrets Sara expects. As Mary’s tale grows more and more dire, Sara, too, must carefully choose which turning to take… to find the road that will lead her safely home.

Darkest Flame
Darkest Flame by Donna Grant is $3.99! This is a paranormal romance with a dragon hero and an MI5 agent heroine. Some readers were a little annoyed at the hero and his Alpha-ness, but others liked the action blended in with the romance. Have you read this series? I read this one and felt it reminded me of early 2000s paranormals, though it came out in 2014.
The Dark Kings have fought for centuries to preserve their dragon magic. But one of the most powerful warriors of his kind will be put to the ultimate test. Is he strong enough to resist his greatest temptations? Or will he be forced to surrender—body and soul?
Denae Lacroix is a beautiful MI5 agent on a deadly mission. Sent to the Scottish Highlands to spy on the mysterious Dreagan Industries, she discovers too late that she’s been set up—as human bait. She is an irresistible lure for a man who has not seen or touched a woman for centuries. He is a man with a destiny—and a desire—that could destroy them both…
It’s been twelve hundred years since Kellan has walked among humans—and there’s no denying the erotically charged attraction he feels for Denae. But as a Dragon King, he is sworn to protect his secrets. Yet the closer he gets to this smart, ravishing woman, the more her life is in danger. All it takes is one reckless kiss to unleash a flood of desire, the fury of dragons… and the fiercest enemy of all.

The Unbroken
The Unbroken by C.L. Clark is $2.99! This is a fantasy novel that both Aarya and Ellen mentioned on a previous Hide Your Wallet. Both were very interested in the promise of a sapphic romance. Did you read this one?
Touraine is a soldier. Stolen as a child and raised to kill and die for the empire, her only loyalty is to her fellow conscripts. But now, her company has been sent back to her homeland to stop a rebellion, and the ties of blood may be stronger than she thought.
Luca needs a turncoat. Someone desperate enough to tiptoe the bayonet’s edge between treason and orders. Someone who can sway the rebels toward peace, while Luca focuses on what really matters: getting her uncle off her throne.
Through assassinations and massacres, in bedrooms and war rooms, Touraine and Luca will haggle over the price of a nation. But some things aren’t for sale.

The Orchid Throne
The Orchid Throne by Jeffe Kennedy is $3.99! This fantasy romance is the first book in the new Forgotten Empires series. I always get excited about fantasy romances I haven’t read yet, but Kennedy’s books are usually hit or miss for me. Have you read this one?
Welcome to the world of Forgotten Empires from award winning author Jeffe Kennedy that begins with The Orchid Throne.
A PRISONER OF FATE
As Queen of the island kingdom of Calanthe, Euthalia will do anything to keep her people free—and her secrets safe—from the mad tyrant who rules the mainland. Guided by a magic ring of her father’s, Lia plays the political game with the cronies the emperor sends to her island. In her heart, she knows that it’s up to her to save herself from her fate as the emperor’s bride. But in her dreams, she sees a man, one with the power to build a better world—a man whose spirit is as strong, and whose passion is as fierce as her own…A PRINCE AMONG MEN
Conrí, former Crown Prince of Oriel, has built an army to overthrow the emperor. But he needs the fabled Abiding Ring to succeed. The ring that Euthalia holds so dear to her heart. I liked A Desperate Fortune; it’s why I’ve read her other books. I will say, though, that the cryptography in the book doesn’t hold up if you pay any attention to it (I did). Pet peeve.
Susanna Kearsley is one of those authors I want to like more than I do. I’ve read several of her books, but A Desperate Fortune is the only one I loved enough to keep.
A Desperate Fortune is also my favorite Susanna Kearsley book. The final scene with Mary and Hugh was possibly the most romantic thing I’ve ever read and brought tears to my eyes. Going to have to do a re-read.
I’m a big fan of Susanna Kearsley but A Desperate Fortune was one of my least favourites and I only ever read it once. I’m interested several people feel the opposite, so maybe I’m due a re-read to see if it grabs me more the second time around…
I read that Jeffe Kennedy trilogy fairly recently and was not impressed. She had some interesting things in there, so there was potential, but I sort of hated everything she did with them. My biggest gripe is that the heroine is realistically horrible for someone of her background and position, which I would have approved of, except that the author clearly felt that I needed to love her, so it felt weird and manipulative. If she’d had the guts to just let the heroine be gloriously utterly horrible without trying to manipulate me into pretending she’s not horrible, I’d still have been deeply unimpressed by how nonsensical the whole mess was, but I’d have enjoyed myself a lot more. I didn’t need to love her to admire her grit and feel sympathy for her situation, but I was unable to say “poor poor darling” when she was whining that her very put upon handmaidens, whom she exploited for sex and had absolute power over, served her because it was their job rather than because they loved her, and the author really seemed to expect me to think she was the victim.
I know I read “A Desperate Fortune”, but I remember nothing about it. Most of Kearsley’s books are like that for me, excepting her wonderful “The Winter Sea”. I need to read more of her books, since there are several still on my TBR after a number of years.
Free on Kindle: The Bookshop and the Barbarian – “a low stakes, comedic and cozy fantasy with a slice-of-life, sapphic romance” – this was recommended in the cozy fantasy subreddit, sounds similar to Legends and Lattes.
The e-version of Ship Wrecked by Olivia Dade is $1.99 at both Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
Both state it is a limited time deal, so not sure how long this sale will last
Floored by Karla Sorenson is free (I believe @DiscoDollyDeb recommended her)
For those who loved Mary and Hugh in A DESPERATE FORTUNE, they reappear in the first story in the anthology THE DEADLY HOURS, with stories by Kearsley, Anna Lee Huber, Christine Trent, and C.S. Harris. The first three have characters from other books/series by the authors, but the Harris is a standalone. I loved the Kearsley and Harris, thought the Huber was okay, and didn’t care for the Trent at all.
