  • Desiring Lady Caro

Desiring Lady Caro by Ella Quinn

Desiring Lady Caro by Ella Quinn is $1.99! This is a historical romance with a Venetian setting. Reviews on Goodreads say this is a pretty fast-paced romance and that there’s a road trip element! Though trigger warning because it seems part of the heroine’s backstory includes rape.

Haunted by her past, Lady Caroline Martindale fled England for the solace of her godmother’s palazzo in Venice. But if Caro was hoping to escape the charms of marriage-minded men, she’s come to the wrong place. And she’ll resort to extreme measures to spurn the advances of a dangerously determined Venetian marquis…

Though most of his friends have married off, Gervais, Earl of Huntley, remains bent on eluding the parson’s mousetrap. But his convictions begin to falter when he arrives in Venice and meets his match in the alluring Lady Caro. What began as a hastily concocted lie to save her from the marquis may become a chance for them both to relinquish their fear – and embrace what they can no longer deny…

  • Dragon Actually

    Dragon Actually by GA Aiken

Dragon Actually by G.A. Aiken is $1.99! This is the first book in the Dragon Kin series, which many praise for having kickass heroines. It also looks like the book has a new cover. I apparently read this book according to my Goodreads, but I remember next to nothing about it.

It’s not always easy being a female warrior with a nickname like Annwyl the Bloody. Men tend to either cower in fear – a lot – or else salute. It’s true that Annwyl has a knack for decapitating legions of her ruthless brother’s soldiers without pausing for breath. But just once it would be nice to be able to really talk to a man, the way, she can talk to Fearghus the Destroyer.

Too bad that Fearghus is a dragon, of the large, scaly and deadly type. With him, Annwyl feels safe – a far cry from the feelings aroused by the hard-bodied, arrogant knight Fearghus has arranged to help train her for battle. With her days spent fighting a man who fills her with fierce, heady desire, and her nights spent in the company of a magical creature who could smite a village just by exhaling, Annwyl is sure life couldn’t get any stranger. She’s wrong…

  • World of Wonders

World of Wonders by Aimee Nezhukumatathil

World of Wonders by Aimee Nezhukumatathil is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal. I mentioned this one on a previous Get Rec’d! It’s great if you love learning cool things about nature.

From beloved, award-winning poet Aimee Nezhukumatathil comes a debut work of nonfiction–a collection of essays about the natural world, and the way its inhabitants can teach, support, and inspire us.

As a child, Nezhukumatathil called many places home: the grounds of a Kansas mental institution, where her Filipina mother was a doctor; the open skies and tall mountains of Arizona, where she hiked with her Indian father; and the chillier climes of western New York and Ohio. But no matter where she was transplanted–no matter how awkward the fit or forbidding the landscape–she was able to turn to our world’s fierce and funny creatures for guidance.

“What the peacock can do,” she tells us, “is remind you of a home you will run away from and run back to all your life.” The axolotl teaches us to smile, even in the face of unkindness; the touch-me-not plant shows us how to shake off unwanted advances; the narwhal demonstrates how to survive in hostile environments. Even in the strange and the unlovely, Nezhukumatathil finds beauty and kinship. For it is this way with wonder: it requires that we are curious enough to look past the distractions in order to fully appreciate the world’s gifts.

Warm, lyrical, and gorgeously illustrated by Fumi Nakamura, World of Wonders is a book of sustenance and joy.

  • Seven Years to Sin

Seven Years to Sin by Sylvia Day

Seven Years to Sin by Sylvia Day is $1.99 and another KDD! This is an erotic historical romance and the book actually inspired Day’s other romance Bared to You. Though readers mention the first half is a little slow, they enjoyed the chemistry between the hero and heroine.

Seven years ago, on the eve of her wedding, Lady Jessica Sheffield witnessed a scene so scandalous she could not erase it from her memory. Shocked, yet strangely titillated, she nevertheless walked down the aisle into a life serene yet unremarkable. But what she kept hidden fueled wildly imaginative and very illicit dreams. . .

Alistair Caulfield ran far from the temptation of the prim debutante–all the way to the West Indies. As a successful merchant, he has little in common with the rakehell youth Jessica once knew. But when newly widowed Jessica steps aboard his ship for a transatlantic passage, seven years’ worth of denied pleasures are held in check by nothing more than a few layers of silk–and the certainty that surrender will consume them both. . .

  1. Felicia says:

If you’re an audiobook fan, Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez is today’s Audible daily deal ($3.99).

  2. Darlynne says:

In the mood for some way OTT, old school romance? Shirlee Busbee’s THE SPANISH ROSE is $.99 at Amazon today. I read/loved her books so long ago and I’m pretty sure all the trigger warnings apply. At the time, they were groundbreaking and I can be grateful for that, even if today I’d be yelling at every page.

  3. Edwina says:

*I’m pretty sure all the trigger warnings apply*

Darlynne, if it’s anything like what I remember of the next book in the series (Gypsy Lady), I can say all the warnings definitely apply.

  4. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Darlynne & @Edwina: Shirlee Busbee—there’s a name from the past! She was one of my favorites back (waaay back) in the day! Between her, Rebecca Brandewyne, and Rosemary Rogers, I was never without a romance to sneak in between all that Hardy, Trollope, and James I had to read. I don’t think you could pay me enough to reread one of those bodice-rippers today, but in my teens & twenties, I consumed them like candy. I’ve said it before and I’ll undoubtedly say it again: it’s best to think of bodice-rippers the way we think of puberty—something we had to go through to get where we are today, but not necessarily something we want to revisit.

  5. FashionablyEvil says:

Ack, I have said this before when SEVEN YEARS TO SIN crops up in the books on sale post, but I just have to stress that the heroine OWNS SLAVES. Also, there is on-page and off-page child and spousal abuse. None of these topics are dealt with carefully or thoughtfully, IMO.

  6. Lynn says:

I didn’t get far into “Desiring Lady Caro” because the villain was so over-the-top evil that it was frankly ridiculous. SPOILER: The hero finds out that the villain murdered(!) a 13-year old girl(!!) who was ready to take her vows as a nun(!!!) because he thought she was a prostitute who refused to serve him(?). The villain is very interested in the heroine and doesn’t take no for an answer which causes the hero and heroine to go on a road trip to safety. I haven’t dnf’d the book forever because the writing is fine and I love me some roadtrips but I had to take a break after this reveal.

  7. Cristie says:

Tal Bauer’s You & Me is on sale for 99 cents at Amazon. Just in case anyone else is like me and has been waiting patiently for it to go on sale.

  8. Dreamingintrees says:

@FashionablyEvil. Thank you so much for the warning. I don’t want to give money for any book where the author has leads who own slaves.
