  • The Raven Spell

The Raven Spell by Luanne Smith

The Raven Spell by Luanne G. Smith is $1.99 at Amazon! This is book one in a series that seems to combine fantasy, mystery, and historical settings. It’s been on my TBR pile since it came out earlier this year.

In Victorian England a witch and a detective are on the hunt for a serial killer in an enthralling novel of magic and murder.

After a nearly fatal blow to the skull, traumatized private detective Ian Cameron is found dazed and confused on a muddy riverbank in Victorian London. Among his effects: a bloodstained business card bearing the name of a master wizard and a curious pocket watch that doesn’t seem to tell time. To retrieve his lost memories, Ian demands answers from Edwina and Mary Blackwood, sister witches with a murky past. But as their secret is slowly unveiled, a dangerous mystery emerges on the darkened streets of London.

To help piece together Ian’s lost time, he and Edwina embark on a journey that will take them from the river foreshore to an East End music hall, and on to a safe house for witches in need of sanctuary from angry mortals. The clues they find suggest a link between a series of gruesome murders, a missing person’s case, and a dreadful suspicion that threatens to tear apart the bonds of sisterhood. As the investigation deepens, could Ian and Edwina be the next to die?

  • The Watchmaker of Filigree Street

The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley

The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley is $3.99! This is historical fiction with a queer protagonist and some magical realism. Reviews on Goodreads say don’t expect to have all the book’s questions answered by the end of the book, though I think there’s a follow-up now.

1883. Thaniel Steepleton returns home to his tiny London apartment to find a gold pocket watch on his pillow. Six months later, the mysterious timepiece saves his life, drawing him away from a blast that destroys Scotland Yard. At last, he goes in search of its maker, Keita Mori, a kind, lonely immigrant from Japan. Although Mori seems harmless, a chain of unexplainable events soon suggests he must be hiding something. When Grace Carrow, an Oxford physicist, unwittingly interferes, Thaniel is torn between opposing loyalties.

The Watchmaker of Filigree Street is a sweeping, atmospheric narrative that takes the reader on an unexpected journey through Victorian London, Japan as its civil war crumbles long-standing traditions, and beyond. Blending historical events with dazzling flights of fancy, it opens doors to a strange and magical past.

  • The Gamble

    The Gamble by Kristen Ashley

The Gamble by Kristen Ashley is $2.99! This is also the first book in her Colorado Mountain series, which seems to mostly be a contemporary romance with suspense elements. New readers of Ashley had a few minor complaints about getting used to her writing style, but overall people couldn’t get enough of the emotional rollercoaster set in a small, snowy town.

Love is the greatest gamble of all…

Nina Sheridan desperately needs a timeout vacation. With a fiancé who can’t even remember how she takes her coffee, Nina wants some distance to rethink her engagement. Flying halfway around the world from England to a mountain town in Colorado should do the trick. But when she finds a gorgeous man at her rental cabin, Nina’s cold, lonely adventure suddenly heats up.

The owner of the house, Holden “Max” Maxwell is surprised by the beautiful woman who turns up at his door. But when Nina becomes ill, Max spends days nursing her back to health. A private man with a broken heart, Max finds himself drawn to the strong-willed woman. Soon it becomes impossible for Nina and Max to deny their growing attraction to one another. Yet even as these two wounded lovebirds think about taking a chance on a relationship, a dangerous secret from Max’s past emerges-and threatens to end their love for good.

  • Don’t Hex and Drive

Don’t Hex and Drive by Juliette Cross

Don’t Hex and Drive by Juliette Cross is FREE on Amazon! Thanks to everyone who let us know about this one! This is book two in the Stay a Spell series and we recently featured book one on sale.

Notoriously bad at peopling, Isadora Savoie spends most of her time in the greenhouse or at the local animal shelter, using her Conduit powers of growth and healing. Content to remain in the background of the Savoie sister shenanigans, she’s reluctantly roped into the mystery of missing neighborhood girls. Now, she’s partnered with a flashy, flirty vampire to find them before it’s too late.

Devraj Kumar has seen and done it all. Three hundred years roaming the earth as a Stygorn — a legendary vampire warrior who operates in the shadows — has its perks. But ennui has set in. That is, until he has a run-in — literally — with an intriguing witch while on a new assignment in New Orleans. Fascinated by her resistance to his charms, Devraj can’t help but push her buttons in an effort to get to know the shy witch. Fortunately for him, she’s been recruited by the Lord of Vampires to assist Devraj on the case.

Between a Bollywood marathon, supernatural dating app, secret package, and sexy driving instruction, Isadora is in over her head. And Devraj? After just one taste, he’s playing for keeps.

The Gamble is vintage Kristen Ashley, so if you aren’t sure if she is going to be for you, it is a good one to try. I did go through most of her back list at one point a few years ago, and I like this book, although the next two books in the series, Sweet Dreams and Lady Luck, are my favorites.

Ashley has a very distinctive style, and you tend to either love her or hate her. She writes *a lot* of details about what the heroine is wearing and how often she moisturizes, and there are many “kick ass” things, but her plots are engaging. The heroes are all overbearing alpha types, but these books have been comfort reads for me.

I stumbled across a promo for the first book in Juliette Cross’s Stay a Spell series, Wolf Gone Wild and snapped it up because I do enjoy a good PNR. Liked it so much I immediately bought the fifth book in the series because I liked the foreshadowing of the two characters’ romance from book one. It was very good, very steamy, and an original take on the whole shifters/magic/world building. So having seen today’s alert for Dont’t Hex and Drive, of course I had to immediately snatch it up too. At about 25% of the way through, I’m glad I did. It’s got the supportive, quirky sisters dynamic, broody New Orleans supernatural goings on and intriguing PNR intrigue. I will undoubtedly get all the books in the series and maybe indulge in the audio versions as well.

@Mzcue I can definitely recommend the audiobooks of the “Stay A Spell” series, the male narrator is especially *chef’s kiss* I actually started the series with “Don’t Hex and Drive” and I’m glad I did because “Wolf Gone Wild” ended up not working for me at all and I probably wouldn’t have continued the series after reading it first. While certain events get mentioned in later books you can still read all of them as standalones in my opinion. There’s also a short story/novelette collection that’s set around Christmas time with some of the couples (“Walking in a Witchy Wonderland”).

  5. Jazzlet says:

I borrowed The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley from the library, the hardback is beautiful and so tactile. The stories are great, but not not all are finished by the end of the book which I found extrememly frustrating as there was no indication it was part of a series. Now I know I shall look fo them!

    @flchen1
I read Midwinter Bride, and remember zilch about it, but I totally remember that cover. I emailed SB Sarah about it, but I don’t recall whether it ever made it to Cover Snark. It still boggles my mind.
