  • Winter’s Orbit

    Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell

RECOMMENDED: Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell is $2.99! Ellen read this one and gave it an A-:

If you enjoy sci-fi, arranged marriage/marriage of convenience stories, courtly intrigues, and/or slow-burn romance, I think Winter’s Orbit is a great choice.

Ancillary Justice meets Red, White & Royal Blue in Everina Maxwell’s exciting debut.

While the Iskat Empire has long dominated the system through treaties and political alliances, several planets, including Thea, have begun to chafe under Iskat’s rule. When tragedy befalls Imperial Prince Taam, his Thean widower, Jainan, is rushed into an arranged marriage with Taam’s cousin, the disreputable Kiem, in a bid to keep the rising hostilities between the two worlds under control.

But when it comes to light that Prince Taam’s death may not have been an accident, and that Jainan himself may be a suspect, the unlikely pair must overcome their misgivings and learn to trust one another as they navigate the perils of the Iskat court, try to solve a murder, and prevent an interplanetary war… all while dealing with their growing feelings for each other.

  • The Cherry Robbers

The Cherry Robbers by Sarai Walker

The Cherry Robbers by Sarai Walker is $1.99! This is a generational historical novel with a hint of fabulism and mystery. I’ve heard mixed things about how “Gothic” it feels.

The highly anticipated second novel from Sarai Walker, following her “slyly subversive” (EW) cult-hit Dietland—a feminist gothic about the lone survivor of a cursed family of sisters, whose time may finally be up.

New Mexico, 2017: Sylvia Wren is one of the most important American artists of the past century. Known as a recluse, she avoids all public appearances. There’s a reason: she’s living under an assumed identity, having outrun a tragic past. But when a hungry journalist starts chasing her story, she’s confronted with whom she once was: Iris Chapel.

Connecticut, 1950: Iris Chapel is the second youngest of six sisters, all heiresses to a firearms fortune. They’ve grown up cloistered in a palatial Victorian house, mostly neglected by their distant father and troubled mother, who believes that their house is haunted by the victims of Chapel weapons. The girls long to escape, and for most of them, the only way out is marriage. But not long after the first Chapel sister walks down the aisle, she dies of mysterious causes, a tragedy that repeats with the second, leaving the rest to navigate the wreckage, to heart-wrenching consequences.

Ultimately, Iris flees the devastation of her family, and so begins the story of Sylvia Wren. But can she outrun the family curse forever?

  • The Year We Fell Down

The Year We Fell Down by Sarina Bowen

The Year We Fell Down by Sarina Bowen is $2.99! This is the first book in The Ivy Years series. This is one of Bowen’s older series and is more new adult, but has been recommended several times on the site. I’m personally a huge fan of Bowen’s contemporaries.

The sport she loves is out of reach. The boy she loves wants someone else.

    What now?

She expected to start Harkness College as a varsity ice hockey player. But a serious accident means that Corey Callahan will start school in a wheelchair instead.

Across the hall, in the other handicapped-accessible dorm room, lives the too-delicious-to-be real Adam Hartley, another would-be hockey star with his leg broken in two places. He’s way out of Corey’s league.

    Also, he’s taken.

Nevertheless, an unlikely alliance blooms between Corey and Hartley in the “gimp ghetto” of McHerrin Hall. Over tequila, perilously balanced dining hall trays, and video games, the two cope with disappointments that nobody else understands.

They’re just friends, of course, until one night when things fall apart. Or fall together. All Corey knows is that she’s falling. Hard.

But will Hartley set aside his trophy girl to love someone as broken as Corey? If he won’t, she will need to find the courage to make a life for herself at Harkness — one which does not revolve around the sport she can no longer play, or the brown-eyed boy who’s afraid to love her back.

  • A Peculiar Combination

A Peculiar Combination by Ashley Weaver

A Peculiar Combination by Ashley Weaver is $2.99! If you’re looking for a new historical mystery to start with a hint of romance, this might be one worth adding to the TBR pile.

The first in the Electra McDonnell series from Edgar-nominated author Ashley Weaver, set in England during World War II, A Peculiar Combination is a delightful mystery filled with spies, murder, romance, and the author’s signature wit.

“Filled with wry humor, tight suspense, and a delightful cast of characters.”—Alyssa Maxwell, author of the Gilded Newport mysteries

FIRST RULE: DON’T LOSE YOUR CONCENTRATION.

Electra McDonnell and her family earn their living outside the law. Breaking into the homes of the rich and picking the locks on their safes may not be condoned by British law enforcement, but with World War II in full swing, Uncle Mick’s locksmith business just can’t pay the bills anymore.

    SECOND RULE: DON’T MAKE MISTAKES.

So when Uncle Mick receives a tip about a safe full of jewels in an empty house, he and Ellie can’t resist. All is going as planned—until the pair is caught red-handed. But instead of arresting them, government official Major Ramsey has an offer: either Ellie agrees to help him break into a safe and retrieve blueprints crucial to the British war effort, or he turns her over to the police.

    THIRD RULE: DON’T GET CAUGHT.

Ellie doesn’t care for the major’s imperious manner, but she has no choice. However, when they break into the house, they find the safe open and empty, and a German spy dead on the floor. Soon, Ellie and Major Ramsey are forced to put aside their differences to unmask the double agent, and stop Allied plans from falling into enemy hands.

  1. Loramir says:

I’m not a huge sci-fi person in general but Ellen’s review got me intrigued enough to try Winter’s Orbit a while back and I LOVED it. In fact I just finished my third or fourth reread!

The worldbuilding is fantastic and immersive, the characters sympathetic and complex, and the slow build of their relationship from an awkward forced marriage to growing trust and friendship and eventually love (with some delicious mutual pining and gradually overcoming their own insecurities and past trauma) is beautiful. There’s a nice balance of politics and intrigue (nicely worked in without too much dry explanation), action and adventure, and more subtle, gradual character and relationship growth.

I think a sequel (same universe but new/unrelated characters, I think) is out any day now or maybe just came out?

Anyway, HIGHLY recommended if you like creative worldbuilding and a sweet, satisfying slow-burn relationship!

The Year We Fell Down might just be my favorite of the series.

  3. KitBee says:

I’m a fan of historical mysteries, and I quite liked A PECULIAR COMBINATION. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but definitely worth a read if you like the premise! I enjoyed the sequel too and plan to continue with the series as new books come out.

  4. Sandra says:

I picked up the Weaver the last time it was on sale. Liked it enough that I blew through most of her backlist. The second book in this series came out earlier this year. Haven’t read it yet, because $15 for an ebook…….

  5. Neile says:

FYI, audiobooks for several of Sherry Thomas’s historicals are on sale for $2.99-$3.99 at chirpbooks.com. I’ve read these from the library but couldn’t resist purchasing copies of my own.

  6. Kareni says:

The Year We Fell Down is one of my two favorite works by Sarina Bowen.

I haven’t read The Cherry Robbers but have enjoyed the other books.

  7. flchen1 says:

Watch Me and Want Me by Cynthia Eden are free.

  8. I_Simon says:

I really enjoyed The Cherry Robbers, it was a little spooky but I was much more invested in the sister dynamics and the way the story explored what avenues and choices were available to women. I did think the ending was a little rushed but it was a solid four star read for me.
