Hide Your Wallet

December 2022 New Releases, Part One

If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month.

Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), and we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month.

We also think this will help us feature books from smaller publishers who don’t have buy links up as early as the bigger trade houses.

As always, if we missed any books that you’re particularly looking forward to, tell us all about them in the comments.

  • The Devil Gets His Due

The Devil Gets His Due by Elizabeth O'Roark

    Author: Elizabeth O'Roark
    Released: December 1, 2022
    Genre: ,
    Series: The Devils #4

Keeley: Last January, I drunk-married my nemesis—hot, oversized geek Graham Tate. With no memory of how it came about, there was only one solution: run off before he woke up and pretend it didn’t happen. It would have worked perfectly if I hadn’t wound up pregnant.

Graham is the opposite of everything I want in a man—practical, disciplined, frugal—but living with him until the baby arrives has me wondering if, perhaps, I’ve been wanting the wrong things all along. And if that drunk version of me last January might have been onto something.

Graham: I never planned to have kids, and I certainly wouldn’t have planned on one with Keeley Connolly—a woman who does not believe in savings accounts or personal safety and thinks Lucky Charms is a health food because of the non-marshmallow bits.

A woman who also didn’t think twice about marrying me in Vegas and ditching me hours later.

I can’t wait to put this behind me and return to my careful, chaos-free life in New York. But the more time I spend with Keeley, the more I’m remembering the things that led me to marry her in the first place…and wondering if I can live without them when this ends.

Aarya: I have such mixed feelings about this series — liked the first book with major caveats, DNFed the second, and loved the third.

Failure isn’t an option, and Zach’s always been able to sell anyone on anything. But back in his hometown, he finds himself in the unfamiliar position of needing a job.

After a childhood of instability, Noa Jacob purchased Second Chance, a thrift store-turned-boutique in Orchard Hill, and is determined to put down the roots she never had. • A Dash of Salt and Pepper

A Dash of Salt and Pepper by Kosoko Jackson

    Author: Kosoko Jackson
Released: December 6, 2022 by Berkley
    Genre: , ,

Sometimes two cooks in the kitchen are better than one in this swoony romantic comedy from the author of I’m So (Not) Over You.

Xavier Gorman is doing less than stellar. He just got dumped, was passed over for a prestigious fellowship, and to top it all off he’s right back home in Harpers Cove, Maine (population: 9,000). The last thing he wants to do is to work as a sous chef in the kitchen of the hip new restaurant in town, The Wharf. Especially since the hot, single-father chef who owns it can’t delegate to save his life.

Logan O’Hare doesn’t understand Xavier or why every word out of his mouth is dipped in sarcasm. Unfortunately, he has no choice but to hire him—he needs more help in the kitchen and his twin daughter, Anne, can only mince so many onions. It might be a recipe for disaster, but Logan doesn’t have many options besides Xavier.

Stuck between a stove and a hot place, Logan and Xavier discover an unexpected connection. But when the heat between them threatens to top the Scoville scale, they’ll have to decide if they can make their relationship work or if life has seasoned them too differently.

AJ: I, for one, welcome the new gay cooking romance trend!

    Aarya: Super cute premise!

  • Well Traveled

    Well Traveled by Jen DeLuca

    Author: Jen DeLuca
Released: December 6, 2022 by Berkley
    Genre: ,
    Series: Well Met #4

The Renaissance Faire is on the move, and Lulu and Dex are along for the ride, in the next utterly charming rom-com from Jen DeLuca.

A high-powered attorney from a success-oriented family, Louisa “Lulu” Malone lives to work, and everything seems to be going right, until the day she realizes it’s all wrong. Lulu’s cousin Mitch introduced her to the world of Renaissance Faires, and when she spies one at a time just when she needs an escape, she leaps into the welcoming environment of turkey legs, taverns, and tarot readers. The only drawback? Dex MacLean: a guitarist with a killer smile, the Casanova of the Faire… and her traveling companion for the summer.

Dex has never had to work for much in his life, and why should he? Touring with his brothers as The Dueling Kilts is going great, and he always finds a woman at every Faire. But when Lulu proves indifferent to his many plaid charms and a shake-up threatens the fate of the band, Dex must confront something he never has before: his future.

Forced to spend days and nights together on the road, Lulu’s interest in the kilted bad boy grows as he shows her a side of himself no one else has seen. The stresses of her old lifestyle fade away as she learns to trust her intuition and follow her heart instead of her head. But when her time on the road is over, will Lulu go with her gut, or are she and Dex destined for separate paths?

  • Witcha Gonna Do?

Witcha Gonna Do? by Avery Flynn

    Author: Avery Flynn
Released: December 6, 2022 by Berkley
    Genre: , ,
    Series: Witchington #1

An unlucky witch and her know-it-all nemesis must team up in the first of a new, hot romantic comedy series from USA Today bestselling author Avery Flynn.

Could it possibly get any worse than having absolutely no magical abilities when you’re a member of the most powerful family of witches ever? It used to be that I’d say no, but then I keep getting set up on dates with Gil Connolly whose hotness is only matched by his ego. Seriously. I can’t stand him. Even if I also can’t stop thinking about him (specifically kissing him) but we’re going to pretend I never told you that part.

So yeah, my life isn’t the greatest right now, but then it goes straight to the absolute worst hell when I accidentally make my sister’s spell glitch and curse my whole family. And the only person who can help non-magical me break the spell? You guessed it. Gil the super hot jerk.

Now we have to work together to save my family and outmaneuver some evil-minded nefarious forces bent on world domination. Oh yeah, and we have to do all that while fighting against the attraction building between us because I may not be magical, but what’s happening between Gil and I sure feels like it.

Amanda: Am I mostly swayed by this cover? Absolutely!

    Elyse: Paranormal enemies to lovers!

    Series: Innkeeper Chronicles #5

Life is busier than ever for Innkeeper, Dina DeMille and Sean Evans. But it’s about to get even more chaotic when Sean’s werewolf mentor is kidnapped. To find him, they must host an intergalactic spouse-search for one of the most powerful rulers in the Galaxy. Dina is never one to back down from a challenge. That is, if she can manage her temperamental Red Cleaver chef; the consequences of her favorite Galactic ex-tyrant’s dark history; the tangled politics of an interstellar nation, and oh, yes, keep the wedding candidates from a dozen alien species from killing each other. 1. MaryK says:

This is showing up on page 6 not at the top of page 1 because of the date. I happened upon it through the Twitter link.

  2. Amanda says:

@MaryK: Whoops, hit 11/1 instead of 12/1 for scheduling.

  3. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I only have four books on my December TBR, but I’m still trying to catch up with October & November books, so perhaps that’s for the best!

RHYTHM by Julie Kriss (December 1) is the third book in her Road Kings series of romances featuring members of a rock band that reunites for a tour. I liked the first two books and am looking forward to this one which features a drummer in recovery and the woman hired to be his sobriety coach.

NATURAL DISASTER by Skye Warren & Amelia Wilde (December 6) is the second book in their Deserted Island trilogy. This is an MMF romance about a couple who crash on an isolated island and connect with the man who lives there. The book was postponed from November release and I won’t be surprised if it is postponed again.

THE LONE WOLF’S REJECTED MATE by Cate C. Wells (December 26): I’m looking forward to the next book in Wells’s Five Packs series of shifter romances. I think this one has an age-gap, and the MCs were secondary characters in THE TYRANT ALPHA’S REJECTED MATE.

THE ACCIDENTAL ACCARDI HEIR by Caitlin Crews (December 27): another HP from one of my favorite queens of angsty heartache. This is the second book of a duet about two brothers. The first book—THE CHRISTMAS HE CLAIMED HIS SECRETARY—was released a couple of days ago.

  4. AtasB says:

Is anyone else’s Dec tbr an unholy free for all of holiday stress and anxiety and that “finished my reading goal for the year already” feeling? Maybe just me?
And while it’s already out, for my fellow superhero readers I gotta rec Tom Taylor’s run on Nightwing that’s going on right now: the first vol (“Leaping into the Light”) is a beautifully drawn (Bruno Redondo), wonderfully written answer to the Fraction/Aja Hawkeye and it has some excellent Dick/Barbara moments. And the next part, part of the “Fear State” event, has a really nice Christmas story (that I, oops, read in Oct) with not only a nice theme/message for the holidays but some really nice panels of Dick Grayson with a candy cane in his mouth. Just sayin’.
(And don’t worry if you don’t know DC well or don’t follow the event–I don’t and don’t and I still loved it.) Next vol will be out in HC just after xmas, too. Going to me by remedy for any post holiday blues.

  5. SaraGale says:

Apparently, Aarya and I are kindred book spirits. I have also found myself rereading the Innkeeper Chronicles multiple times this year, and plunging into many other Ilona Andrew’s books.
I’m looking forward to Well Traveled. I really enjoyed the 1st two books of the series. The third was a touch flat to me but still sweet.

  6. Deborah says:

Many thanks to Aarya for the “this, that and the other” review of O’Roark’s series. Now I know to give the third book a try (I, too, DNF’d #2).

  7. DeborahT says:

I’m excited to read Fearne Hill’s new release, CLOUD TEN. She’s leaped to the top of my favourite mm author list in the past year.

  8. Lynn says:

I’m hoping someone will review “The Vibrant Years” because I’d like to know if there is any romance (and HEA) in it. I’m also curious about the angst/trauma level in this one because “The Emma Project” was quite heavy at times and from what I’ve gathered from reviews so were the other Austen retellings.

  9. Lisa F says:

A Dash of Salt and Pepper is Great; Witcha Gonna Do? is good too! The rest is on my TBR!

  10. catscatscats says:

KJ Charles! Masters In This Hall, novella, comes out Monday 6th.

Celia Lake! Forged in Combat, novella, comes out 16th. Lake is also doing a talk over at MetaFilter on 7th December. EventBrite link.
