Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors by Sonali Dev

Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors by Sonali Dev is $1.99! Carrie reviewed this one and gave it a B-:

Sonali Dev is an amazing creator of character and I suspect that this book with be A grade stuff for many readers. I enjoyed the conversations around class, race, and disability (in Emma’s case). However, the book left me stressed out instead of happy

Award-winning author Sonali Dev launches a new series about the Rajes, an immigrant Indian family descended from royalty, who have built their lives in San Francisco—a compelling, heartwarming romance between two strangers from completely different worlds, and a poignant exploration of cultural assimilation, identity, and the meaning of the word home.

Only in a family like the Rajes could San Francisco’s most acclaimed neurosurgeon be considered the black sheep. Dr. Trisha Raje has developed groundbreaking technology and won the respect of her peers and the life-long gratitude of her patients. Still, her large, close-knit family—descended from old Indian nobility—has certain rules to uphold. Trusting outsiders is frowned upon. Disloyalty of any kind is unacceptable. Trisha never intended to jeopardize her brother’s political aspirations, yet her long-ago actions inadvertently did just that. At last she has a chance to turn that around.

Up-and-coming chef DJ Caine has known people like Trisha before—people who judge his background and find it lacking, who put pedigree above character. He may need the lucrative, career-making job the Rajes offer, but he has little time for Trisha, especially when he learns that she’s the arrogant surgeon who wants to perform an untested procedure on his sister, Emma.

As the two continually clash, their assumptions shatter like spun sugar on one of DJ’s stunning desserts.  Drawn to DJ’s steadiness, humor, and passion—as well as his extraordinary food—Trisha begins to reexamine her view of the world, while challenging his beliefs about the nature of family. But there’s a past to be reckoned with before they can hope to savor a future bursting with delicious possibility.

  • The Dachshund Wears Prada

The Dachshund Wears Prada by Stefanie London

The Dachshund Wears Prada by Stefanie London is $1.99! This is book one in the Paws in the City series. I didn’t mind this one! Way more emotional than I expected. The cover did give me pause (heh) as the design gave me more 2007 chick lit vibes.

How do you start over when the biggest mistake of your life has more than one million views?

Forget diamonds—the internet is forever. Social media consultant Isla Thompson learned that lesson the hard way when she went viral for all the wrong reasons. A month later, Isla is still having nightmares about the moment she ruined a young starlet’s career and made herself the most unemployable influencer in Manhattan. But she doesn’t have the luxury of hiding until she’s no longer Instagram poison. Not when her fourteen-year-old sister, Dani, needs Isla to keep a roof over their heads. So, she takes the first job she can get: caring for Camilla, a glossy-maned, foul-tempered hellhound.

After a week of ferrying Camilla from playdates to pet psychics, Isla starts to suspect that the dachshund’s bark is worse than her bite—just like her owner, Theo Garrison. Isla has spent her career working to make people likable and here’s Theo—happy to hide behind his reputation as a brutish recluse. But Theo isn’t a brute—he’s sweet and funny, and Isla should not see him as anything but the man who signs her paychecks. Because loving Theo would mean retreating to his world of secluded luxury, and Isla needs to show Dani that no matter the risk, dreams are always worth chasing.

  • Top Secret

    Top Secret by Sarina Bowen

Top Secret by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy is $2.49 at Amazon! This is a M/M new adult romance. I’m basing this on the lackluster description, but it seems like two opposites or even enemies getting to know each other over text, without realizing who the other person is.

Bestselling authors Sarina Bowen & Elle Kennedy return with their first Male / Male romance in 3 years.

LobsterShorts, 21. Jock. Secretly a science geek. Hot AF.

LobsterShorts: So. Here goes. For her birthday, my girlfriend wants…a threesome.

SinnerThree: Then you’ve come to the right hookup app.

LobsterShorts: Have you done this sort of thing before? With another guy?

SinnerThree: All the time. I’m an equal opportunity player. You?

    LobsterShorts: [crickets!]

SinnerThree, 21. Finance major. Secretly a male dancer. Hot AF.

SinnerThree: Well, I’m down if you are. My life is kind of a mess right now. School, work, family stress. Oh, and I live next door to the most annoying dude in the world. I need the distraction. Are you sure you want this?

LobsterShorts: I might want it a little more than I’m willing to admit.

SinnerThree: Hey, nothing wrong with pushing your boundaries…

LobsterShorts: Tell that to my control-freak father. Anyway. What if this threesome is awkward?

SinnerThree: Then it’s awkward. It’s not like we’ll ever have to see each other again. Right? Just promise you won’t fall in love with me.

LobsterShorts: Now wouldn’t that be life-changing…

  • The Cat Who Saved Books

The Cat Who Saved Books by Sosuke Natsukawa

The Cat Who Saved Books by Sosuke Natsukawa, translated by Louise Heal Kawai is $1.99! I mentioned this one in a previous edition of Get Rec’d. It’s a lightly magical story with a book-loving cat and an examination of grief.

From the #1 bestselling author in Japan comes a celebration of books, cats, and the people who love them, infused with the heartwarming spirit of The Guest Cat and The Travelling Cat Chronicles.

Bookish high school student Rintaro Natsuki is about to close the secondhand bookstore he inherited from his beloved bookworm grandfather. Then, a talking cat appears with an unusual request. The feline asks for—or rather, demands—the teenager’s help in saving books with him. The world is full of lonely books left unread and unloved, and the cat and Rintaro must liberate them from their neglectful owners.

Their mission sends this odd couple on an amazing journey, where they enter different mazes to set books free. Through their travels, the cat and Rintaro meet a man who leaves his books to perish on a bookshelf, an unwitting book torturer who cuts the pages of books into snippets to help people speed read, and a publishing drone who only wants to create bestsellers. Their adventures culminate in one final, unforgettable challenge—the last maze that awaits leads Rintaro down a realm only the bravest dare enter . . .

An enthralling tale of books, first love, fantasy, and an unusual friendship with a talking cat, The Cat Who Saved Books is a story for those for whom books are so much more than words on paper.

  1. Gloriamarie Amalfitano says:

As I have a HUGE backlog of books on my Kindle and am somewhat worried that it will crash, I have sworn off buying new books. Yet I still read the reviews. However, I could not resist The Cat Who Saved Books. I am in the middle of a vampire series right now, but as soon as I finish with that…

  2. kkw says:

I just read top secret. Nothing groundbreaking, but enjoyable. It’s two dudes in the same frat, and to me, seemed to lean a little heavily on frat bro porn and magic mike shorthand rather than fully develop new, actual characters. The pacing was a bit random, and just generally new adult is not my jam. Still, managed to hold my attention and was good quick fun!

  3. Musical Trees says:

What on earth is with the blurb for TOP SECRET?

I’m a fan of both Sarina Bowen (still) and Elle Kennedy (older stuff), so I enjoyed this book. The two MCs are in the same frat and live across the hall from each other. One is a privileged rich boy and legacy frat member. One is poor, has a secret side job as an exotic dancer, and is only the in frat to save money. They dislike each other – except when they meet and DM on a hookup app. There’s some angst, some ridiculous bro-y behavior, some sexual discovery, and some hot chemistry. Is it my favorite book by these authors? No. Did I have fun with it? Absolutely.

  4. Vasha says:

The Guest Cat is heartwarming now? Admittedly it’s very possible that the Japanese readership tends to find its heart warmed by different things than my American self does, but I still don’t see how that book doesn’t make people feel blue for days. Nothing wrong with a good elegiac sad book, but it should be advertised as such.
