Links: Cats, Dioramas, & More

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Welcome to Wednesday Links! How are you all?

My partner and I hit up two apple orchards for our continued quest for the best apple cider donut in New England. I also had the opportunity to make my apple butterscotch pie and it turned out wonderfully!

What are you Halloween plans? My partner’s friend and neighbor is having a get together. We’re wearing a couple’s costume: San and Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke. We saw the  movie together on our third date, so the suggestion from them is very sweet. We’ll also be making and bringing caramel apple rice krispie treats. I had it at a friends BBQ recently and desperately asked for the recipe.

Student Loan Debt Relief applications are open! Don’t forget to submit yours!

If you listen to the podcast, you’ll know that Sarah loves a good pun. Well, here’s an entire instagram account full of them, called PunHub.

I love watching YouTube videos to wind down, usually mindless, cool things I don’t have to think too hard about. One of my recent favorites is this diorama channel. The maker usually creates some creepy element to them, like a giant spider hiding in a mineshaft or a massive snapping turtle beneath a riverboat.

Lastly, here’s a thread of women who are over it as they pose with their cats.

Don’t forget to share what cool or interesting things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

Me, I’ll be reading children’s Halloween books. Some short stories, some comics. And my candy is already prepared–I’ve got candy safe for every common allergy. (We don’t get a lot of trick-or-treaters where I live, so I can afford to buy regular-sized stuff.)

I’m in New Jersey, but Delicious Orchards is famous for their apple cider doughnuts (and pies).

I think Blubber by Judy Blume is the classic spooky Halloween book for kids! I never get trick or treaters, so I don’t go all out anymore for the holiday. As an adult, I like candy no kid would like (88% dark chocolate).

I’m going to watch the original movie The Haunting. I was creeped out and terrified the first time I saw it when I was 15. It still terrifies me. It’s what you don’t see that can scare the living crap out of you. The one scene with Eleanor and Theo…..shivers. If you’ve seen the movie you know what I’m talking about. I always have to watch it when my hubby is around. Lights on too.

I knew who that YouTube account was going to be before I even clicked! He’s very good. Just be aware that sometimes really funny, dry comments are in text onscreen really briefly–you have to be paying close attention to catch it all. It’s worth it, but sometimes I’m sad I can’t really enjoy on my phone while doing dishes or whatever where I might have to look away.
I also really like how in some videos he talks about how things went wrong and how he learned from it and kept going. In the end he always “calls it good” rather than done/perfect/great or whatever. It’s a nice vibe.

Omg I’ve forgotten to buy candy – let me add that to tomorrows to-do list.

I have a zoom class from 4-7 that I expect trick or treaters to interrupt & a 7-10 in person that im bummed about lol!

Also can’t wait to watch dioramas youtube! That sounds so fun.

Westward Orchards farmstand has our favorite apple cider donuts, followed closely by Bolton Orchards

I’ll probably be at my sister’s to hand out candy while she and BIL take the kids out. This gives me a chance to raid the candy bowl and call it fair payment.

Amanda, I need your apple butterscotch pie recipe – it sounds amazing! Is there a link?

  8. Saryta says:

How can you mention Caramel Apple Rice Krispies and not share a recipe. For shame. Please fix this terrible oversight.

  9. Kate says:

I live in an apartment community with a lot of Asian families who are new to the US and Halloween, so I never have any idea if or how many trick or treaters will show up. The past few years I’ve tried to give out non-candy things like tiny pots of slime so that there isn’t a massive bag of peanut butter cups or Paydays leftover waiting to be consumed.

    I come bearing recipes!

For the apple butterscotch pie, it’s from THE BOOK ON PIE by Erin Jeanne Mcdowell. However, you can find it online:

    https://cloudykitchen.com/blog/butterscotch-apple-pie/

For the rice krispies, it’s a recipe a friend gave me, copy and pasted below:

    6 cups Rice Krispies
    1 package marshmallows
1 package caramels or some caramel sauce (I used Trader Joe’s apple cider caramels)
    Dried apples
    4 tablespoons butter

All you do is melt the butter in a large pot, then if you have soft caramels add those in, along with cut up dried apples. Let that melt a bit, then add the marshmallows and stir until melted. Then add your Rice Krispies and stir. If you have caramel sauce, I would add that at the same time as the cereal. Pour that mixture into a greased baking dish, push it all down with a spatula, and there you go!

Thank you, Amanda! That pie looks amazing – I’ll be trying that as soon as I can 🙂
