Starry-Eyed Love

Starry-Eyed Love by Helena Hunting is $1.99! This is book two in the Spark House series, which features a group of friends who run like an events space. I feel like Hunting is a hit or mess author. What do you think?
Charming, hilarious, and emotional…Starry-Eyed Love is Helena Hunting at her very best!
Having just broken up with her boyfriend, London Spark is not in the mood to be hit on. Especially not when she’s out celebrating her single status with her sisters. So when a very attractive man pays for their drinks and then slips her his number, she passes it right back to him with a ‘thanks, but no thanks’. As the business administrator for their family’s event hotel, the Spark House, London has more important things to worry about, like bringing in new clientele.
As luck would have it, a multi-million-dollar company calls a few months later asking for a meeting to discuss a potential partnership, and London is eager to prove to her sisters, and herself, that she can land this deal. Just when she thinks she has nailed her presentation, the company’s CEO, Jackson Holt, walks in and inserts himself into the meeting. Not only that, but he also happens to be the same guy she turned down at the bar a few months ago.
As they begin to spend more time together, their working relationship blossoms into something more. It isn’t until their professional entanglements are finally over, that London and Jackson are finally ready to take the next step in their relationship. But between Jackson’s secretive past and London’s struggle with her sisters, London must question where she really stands – not just with Jackson, but with the Spark House, too.

The Clockmaker’s Daughter by Kate Morton is $1.99! This is historical fiction and was mentioned on a previous podcast episode. I know another Morton title was well-received on the site, but not sure how it compares!
A rich, spellbinding new novel from the author of The Lake House—the story of a love affair and a mysterious murder that cast their shadow across generations, set in England from the 1860’s until the present day.
My real name, no one remembers.
The truth about that summer, no one else knows. In the summer of 1862, a group of young artists led by the passionate and talented Edward Radcliffe descends upon Birchwood Manor on the banks of the Upper Thames. Their plan: to spend a secluded summer month in a haze of inspiration and creativity. But by the time their stay is over, one woman has been shot dead while another has disappeared; a priceless heirloom is missing; and Edward Radcliffe’s life is in ruins.
Over one hundred and fifty years later, Elodie Winslow, a young archivist in London, uncovers a leather satchel containing two seemingly unrelated items: a sepia photograph of an arresting-looking woman in Victorian clothing, and an artist’s sketchbook containing the drawing of a twin-gabled house on the bend of a river.
Why does Birchwood Manor feel so familiar to Elodie? And who is the beautiful woman in the photograph? Will she ever give up her secrets?
Told by multiple voices across time, The Clockmaker’s Daughter is a story of murder, mystery, and thievery, of art, love and loss. And flowing through its pages like a river, is the voice of a woman who stands outside time, whose name has been forgotten by history, but who has watched it all unfold: Birdie Bell, the clockmaker’s daughter.

The Tourist Attraction by Sarah Morgenthaler is 99c! I’m curious about this one and sounds super cute. However, some reviews I’ve read mention it lacks some chemistry and oomph. Have you read this one?
He had a strict “no tourists” policy…
Until she broke all of his rules. When Graham Barnett named his diner The Tourist Trap, he meant it as a joke. Now he’s stuck slinging reindeer dogs to an endless parade of resort visitors who couldn’t interest him less. Not even the sweet, enthusiastic tourist in the corner who blushes every time he looks her way…
Two weeks in Alaska isn’t just the top item on Zoey Caldwell’s bucket list. It’s the whole bucket. One look at the mountain town of Moose Springs and she’s smitten. But when an act of kindness brings Zoey into Graham’s world, she may just find there’s more to the grumpy local than meets the eye…and more to love in Moose Springs than just the Alaskan wilderness.

Were-Geeks Save Wisconsin by Kathy Lyons is $1.99! This is book one in Were-Geeks Save the World and sounds like a bonkers M/M romance. However, I will note this is by Dreamspinner Press, which wasn’t paying their authors their royalties a couple years ago. Not sure how that shook out and what that means for this book in particular.
When badass werewolves battling supernatural evil realize they need tech support, they recruit a group of geeks with hilarious—and romantic—results.
Chemist Josh Collier is having a blast at a comic book convention when he gets the shock of his life—he’s a werewolf! WTF? Before he can howl, he’s whisked away to a secret lair by Nero, a hot guy dressed as a Roman centurion. Josh’s former life is over, and his genius is needed at Wulf, Inc.
Nero has no interest in babysitting a trainee were-geek when he’d rather be killing the demon that wiped out his entire pack. While Josh analyzes the monster’s weapon, wild passion ignites between him and Nero.
With destiny and their pack in the balance, can they survive the demon out to destroy Wisconsin?

Tried and tried to get into the Clockmaker’s Daughter and was DNF. Purchased as an audiobook, and if your MC is named Elodie, do note it jars on ears to hear every other sentence. Petty, yes. But she also never hooked me enough to stick with her to see her bloom. I SOOO wanted to love this book as I have an archival emphasis in my library degree.
It’s my understanding that Dreamspinner Press is still on many readers ‘do not by from’ list because it apparently has yet to treat authors fairly, including paying all owed royalties. Sadly, I don’t think the situation has gotten better.
I enjoyed The Tourist Attraction by Sarah Morgenthaler but no longer recall many details.
I thought The Tourist Attraction was very cute in a quirky Hallmark holiday romance kind of way. As for the rest of the series: the 2nd one was fine-to-okay and the 3rd one made me want to spit nails! YMMV.
@Rhode: Thank you!
I wasn’t aware about Dreamspinner Press, but that’s really disappointing. My book club read Were-geeks save Wisconsin and it was a B- for me, except for one thing that brought it down to an F.
TRIGGER WARNING, I’ll hide it if I can work out how to.
After Josh’s first mission/brush with danger (I can’t remember the exact details) he’s all jittery and adrenaline filled. The only way to “help” him is for Nero to uh … take him in hand. Josh does not explicitly consent to this. It reads like one of the really squicky old school alphaholes taking advantage of the young virgin who doesn’t know any better. “Just relax, this will make you feel good” vibes. I’m all for dubcon, if that’s your thing, but this just didn’t even address consent at all.
Ack I didn’t get it right. Mods, if you wouldn’t mind deleting my comment please?
I found a short thread from TJ Klune that indicates DSP is still not paying it’s authors:

I hid the text in spoiler tags, no worries. Thank you for flagging me!
The main difference with this book is the main love interest isn’t an alphahole. lol. he’s actually sweet and caring and I love that HH gave him a gentle side. no bossy guy who doesn’t take no for an answer here and I cant tell you how refreshing that is. not that those other books aren’t entertaining (because I’ve read loads of them), but this just feels more genuine to me. London and Jackson are just so cute together and, because of that, I actually think I like this sequel more than the first book!
I enjoyed Helena Hunting’s Pucked series – they’re silly and sex-crazed and the men are all kind of himbos, but in a fun way. I’ve liked some of Hunting’s other stuff, but this star series is just not doing it for me. The first one was fine, not great, didn’t love the two main characters and hate the whole friends to lovers but the guy didn’t notice the tomboy girl until she dressed sexy trope, but I figure they’re quick reads so I’ll check out the next one to see if it’s better. The heroine is the biggest pushover of all time, I hate millionaire/billionaire heroes (ymmv), and to advance a plot point about what a pushover is heroine is, Hunting turns the sister from the first book into a huge jerk. It was baffling. I don’t think I’ll even try with the third.
I tried reading the Morgenthaler and found it to aggressively quirky in a way that read try-hard, and ended up not finishing it.
