  • Bombshells

    Bombshells by Sarina Bowen

Bombshells by Sarina Bowen is 99c! This is book five in the Brooklyn Hockey series. For the most part, I feel like the Bitchery has positive feelings about the series. What did you think of this one compared to the rest?

The women’s league is in the house! And Brooklyn will never be the same again for Anton Bayer and the team…

This is my last chance to ditch my playboy reputation and finally fulfill my potential. So I’ve made three rules for our biggest season yet: no boozing, no women, and no scandals.

    Especially that last thing.

So who do I befriend on the very first day back at the rink? An amazing female hockey player. I want Sylvie in a way that’s more than just friendly. I crave her. But I have a championship to win, and so does she.

Then she gets her heart broken by my teammate, and I make the foolish mistake of comforting her in the best way I know how. Our night together sets off a string of sins.

Nobody can know about our affair, especially my overprotective teammate. I can’t let anyone see into my greedy little heart. Not even her.

The things I want from her, and the things we’ve already done? If anyone knew, there’d be bombshells.

Contains: a defenseman with dreamy blue eyes, a female goalie with bad ideas, a major battle of the sexes and a swimming pool scene…

  • The Bounce Back

The Bounce Back by Addie Woolridge

The Bounce Back by Addie Woolridge is $1.99! This one was mentioned in a previous Hide Your Wallet. This is a workplace romance with some hints of maybe an opposites attract pairing.

In this delightfully fiery rom-com from The Checklist author Addie Woolridge, even the worst situations have a silver lining.

Aspiring artist Neale Delacroix should be on top of the world. She’s landed a spot in an exclusive art program that’s sure to be her ticket to success, but then her best shot at stardom goes up in flames—literally. When her relationship follows suit, Neale finds herself a stone’s throw from rock bottom.

Her heart broken and her dream deferred, Neale decides to work a soul-crushing nine-to-five job until the heat dies down. However, that’s not exactly what happens when she meets Anthony, a sizzling coworker with a perfect smile.

Convinced that she breaks everything she touches, Neale’s sworn off art and men. Yet her creative spirit still beckons, and she can’t get Anthony out of her head. She’s caught in that familiar space between daydreams and responsibilities, desperate to find a new way forward. With her future hanging in the balance, Neale must decide if she is down and out…or ready to bounce back.

  • Charming as a Verb

Charming as a Verb by Ben Philippe

Charming as a Verb by Ben Philippe is $2.99! This is a contemporary young adult novel with a hint of romance. There is a bargain made between rivals and a dog walking scheme.

Henri “Halti” Haltiwanger can charm just about anyone. He is a star debater and popular student at the prestigious FATE academy, the dutiful first-generation Haitian son, and the trusted dog walker for his wealthy New York City neighbors. But his easy smiles mask a burning ambition to attend his dream college, Columbia University.

There is only one person who seems immune to Henri’s charms: his “intense” classmate and neighbor Corinne Troy. When she uncovers Henri’s less-than-honest dog-walking scheme, she blackmails him into helping her change her image at school. Henri agrees, seeing a potential upside for himself.

Soon what started as a mutual hustle turns into something more surprising than either of them ever bargained for. . . .

This is a sharply funny and insightful novel about the countless hustles we have to keep from doing the hardest thing: being ourselves.

  • The Second Chance Cafe

The Second Chance Cafe by Alison Kent

The Second Chance Cafe by Alison Kent is 99c! This is a small town romance with a blue collar hero and some home renovation. This is the first book in the Hope Springs series and the rest of the books are available for 99c each! During the RITA® Reader Challenge, this book earned a B grade from Reader Gleecady

Growing up, Kaylie Flynn was shuffled from foster home to foster home before being welcomed into Winton and May Wise’s family. It was May who taught Kaylie the comfort of home, and the healing power of baking the perfect brownie. Years later, May leaves Kaylie the money she needs to open her own café in the charming Victorian house they once shared. Now back in Hope Springs, Kaylie’s determined to finally make all her dreams a reality—and unearth answers to lingering questions about her past.

Soon, however, Kaylie’s carefully laid plans take an unexpected turn. The house needs far more work than she realized, and Tennessee Keller, the carpenter Kaylie hires, is proving to be a very handsome and very unneeded distraction from her quest to uncover the truth about her parents. When a crisis threatens to destroy everything she’s worked so hard to build, Kaylie must decide where her heart lies: with the ghosts of her past or the love and promise of her future.

  1. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I just read BOMBSHELLS last week. In fact, I posted about it on this past Saturday’s WAYR. Overall, I liked it–especially how Bowen addresses the financial inequities between men’s and women’s professional sports teams. However, one aspect of the book became irritating after a while: the hero constantly refers to the heroine as a “girl” in his interior monologue. There’s only so much “That’s my girl” I can take in reference to a grown-ass woman and professional athlete.

  2. Lisa F says:

I liked all of these, but Charming as a Verb was a top pic for me several years ago on my Books of the Year round-up.

  3. Mzcue says:

I enjoyed Bombshells a lot. I don’t come across many women in sports romances, so it’s cause for reading delight when they do turn up. My favorite is Mariana Zapata’s Kulti, which is a slow, slow burn soccer story. Both Bombshells and Kulti are entertaining with nuanced characters and engaging plots in addition to glimpses of women in professional sports.

  4. Susanna says:

If I refer to “girls” it’s either in reference to females under 18, or to my bosom.

  5. devra says:

i really want to love bowen but i often find myself having the same reaction as @discodollydeb — either that, or the first person narration grates. always a fun, easy story, though!
