  • I Hate You More

I Hate You More by Lucy Gilmore

I Hate You More by Lucy Gilmore is $1.99! This is an enemies to lovers romance and has some pretty good dogs. I know Gilmore’s books have been recommended in the comments previously and the Bitchery generally has positive thoughts.

An unforgettably funny enemies-to-lovers romcom about a grumpy dog show judge, a determined former beauty queen, and a Golden Retriever more interested in stealing bacon than winning Best in Show.

Ruby Taylor gave up pageant life the day she turned eighteen and figured she’d never look back. But when an old friend begs her to show her beloved Golden Retriever at the upcoming West Coast Canine Classic, Ruby reluctantly straps on her heels and gets to work.

If only she knew exactly what the adorably lazy lump of a dog was getting her into.

If there’s one thing veterinarian Spencer Wilson knows in this world, it’s dogs. Human beings are an entirely different animal—especially stubborn, gorgeous women clearly in way over their heads. As judge for the local dog show, Spencer advises Ruby to quit while she still can, but her old fervor for winning has returned—and she’s determined to show the stern, broody-eyed judge that she’s more than just a pretty face.

  • Love at First

Love at First by Kate Clayborn

Love at First by Kate Clayborn is $2.99! Clayborn is an autobuy author for some of the Bitchery. Catherine gave this one a B:

Love at First is a beautiful book and worth the painful beginnings – but if you’re feeling fragile, too, maybe proceed with caution.

A sparkling and tender novel from the acclaimed author of Love Lettering, full of bickering neighbors, surprise reunions, and the mysterious power of love that fans of Christina Lauren, Sarah Hogle, and Emily Henry will adore.

Sixteen years ago, a teenaged Will Sterling saw—or rather, heard—the girl of his dreams. Standing beneath an apartment building balcony, he shared a perfect moment with a lovely, warm-voiced stranger. It’s a memory that’s never faded, though he’s put so much of his past behind him. Now an unexpected inheritance has brought Will back to that same address, where he plans to offload his new property and get back to his regular life as an overworked doctor. Instead, he encounters a woman, two balconies above, who’s uncannily familiar . . .

No matter how surprised Nora Clarke is by her reaction to handsome, curious Will, or the whispered pre-dawn conversations they share, she won’t let his plans ruin her quirky, close-knit building. Bound by her loyalty to her adored grandmother, she sets out to foil his efforts with a little light sabotage. But beneath the surface of their feud is an undeniable connection. A balcony, a star-crossed couple, a fateful meeting—maybe it’s the kind of story that can’t work out in the end. Or maybe, it’s the perfect second chance . . .

  • The Rake Gets Ravished

The Rake Gets Ravished by Sophie Jordan

RECOMMENDED: The Rake Gets Ravished by Sophie Jordan is $2.99! This is book two in the Duke Hunt series. Elyse recently wrote a Lightning Review of this one and gave it an A-:

Overall it’s conflict-light, sex-positive, and depicts a woman finally taking something she wants purely for herself.

New York Times bestselling author Sophie Jordan returns with an all new sizzling historical romance in her Duke Hunt series about a woman determined to reclaim her family home from the dangerously handsome owner of London’s most popular gaming hell.

The owner of London’s most popular gaming hell, wealthy and powerful Silas Masters is feared by men and desired by women—except Mercy Kittinger. When the blackguard wins her family home in a game of cards, Mercy steals into Silas’s rooms, intent on destroying the proof. But things don’t go to plan…

She would have her way with him…

Caught in the act, Mercy must be bold to save herself… even if it means seducing the dangerous rogue and then disappearing with the dawn, debt voucher in hand. Safe at home and determined to settle back into her quiet, uneventful life, Mercy burns at the memory of her night spent ravishing the most compelling man she’d ever met. Thank goodness she’ll never see him again!

    He didn’t see her coming…

No one trifles with Silas Masters. Even if he could forget the dark-haired seductress who undid him, he can’t allow anyone to steal from him. He will hunt down the sultry woman who haunts his dreams and show her just how sweet payback can be.

  • Educated

    Educated by Tara Westover

Educated by Tara Westover is $2.99! This book finally came out in paperback after several years. I listened to it on audio and while it was super compelling and I’m glad I did it, there were some really sad and frustrating moments.

Tara Westover grew up preparing for the End of Days, watching for the sun to darken, for the moon to drip as if with blood. She spent her summers bottling peaches and her winters rotating emergency supplies, hoping that when the World of Men failed, her family would continue on, unaffected.

She hadn’t been registered for a birth certificate. She had no school records because she’d never set foot in a classroom, and no medical records because her father didn’t believe in doctors or hospitals. According to the state and federal government, she didn’t exist.

As she grew older, her father became more radical, and her brother, more violent. At sixteen Tara decided to educate herself. Her struggle for knowledge would take her far from her Idaho mountains, over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge. Only then would she wonder if she’d travelled too far. If there was still a way home.

EDUCATED is an account of the struggle for self-invention. It is a tale of fierce family loyalty, and of the grief that comes with the severing of the closest of ties. With the acute insight that distinguishes all great writers, Westover has, from her singular experience, crafted a universal coming-of-age story, one that gets to the heart of what an education is and what it offers – the perspective to see one’s life through new eyes, and the will to change it.

  1. Laurel says:

I also listened to Educated as an audiobook. It is very affecting, but I do wonder about how “true” it is. I remember going down a rabbit hole of wikipedia pages after I finished it, trying to determine what was true and what was embellished. Definitely worth a read.

  2. Msb says:

Educated is a tremendous book, but not a universal story unless misogynist abuse and gaslighting are universal. Amid this appalling story, there are some of the best descriptions of the joy of learning that I’ve ever seen. The descriptions of the gaslighting to which the author was subjected ring equally but more sadly true.

  3. EJ says:

I love dog books! More dog books please!

  4. Tam says:

A lot of EDUCATED was unpleasantly familiar to me (raised by off-the-grid homeschooling fundamentalists with a father who didn’t believe in higher education for women; went to Oxford for my doctorate rather than Cambridge). I did feel as if the memoirist was careful to hold back a lot about her happy-ever-after – I really wanted to know what her post-sect religious beliefs were, for example, and how much of a relationship she still had with her family. But she clearly only wanted to reveal so much.

A Rake Gets Ravished is $5.99 when I click through on Amazon.
