Get a Life, Chloe Brown

RECOMMENDED: Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert is $1.99! Kiki really loved this one and gave it an A:
Get a Life, Chloe Brown saw my expectations’ proffered hand and kissed it gently, and then proceeded to charm their pants off. In a tent. With s’mores. (Not with s’mores, because s’mores apparently are not a thing in the UK.) This metaphor got away from me, but you get the idea. This book is outstanding.
Talia Hibbert, one of contemporary romance’s brightest new stars, delivers a witty, hilarious romantic comedy about a woman who’s tired of being “boring” and recruits her mysterious, sexy neighbor to help her experience new things—perfect for fans of Sally Thorne, Jasmine Guillory, and Helen Hoang.
Chloe Brown is a chronically ill computer geek with a goal, a plan, and a list. After almost—but not quite—dying, she’s come up with seven directives to help her “Get a Life”, and she’s already completed the first: finally moving out of her glamourous family’s mansion. The next items?
Enjoy a drunken night out.
Ride a motorcycle.
Go camping.
Have meaningless but thoroughly enjoyable sex.
Travel the world with nothing but hand luggage.
And…do something bad.
But it’s not easy being bad, even when you’ve written step-by-step guidelines on how to do it correctly. What Chloe needs is a teacher, and she knows just the man for the job.Redford ‘Red’ Morgan is a handyman with tattoos, a motorcycle, and more sex appeal than ten-thousand Hollywood heartthrobs. He’s also an artist who paints at night and hides his work in the light of day, which Chloe knows because she spies on him occasionally. Just the teeniest, tiniest bit.
But when she enlists Red in her mission to rebel, she learns things about him that no spy session could teach her. Like why he clearly resents Chloe’s wealthy background. And why he never shows his art to anyone. And what really lies beneath his rough exterior…

The Witches Are Coming by Lindy West is $2.99! A bunch of us were excited for this one on a previous Hide Your Wallet. While this nonfiction may be a cathartic read, it also might be a little heavy right now.
The firebrand New York Times columnist and bestselling author of Shrill–soon to be a Hulu series starring Aidy Bryant–provides a brilliant and incisive look at how patriarchy, intolerance, and misogyny have conquered not just politics but American culture itself.
What do Adam Sandler, Donald Trump, and South Park have in common? Why are myths like “reverse sexism” and “political correctness” so seductive? And why do movie classics of yore, from Sixteen Candles to Revenge of the Nerds, make rape look like so much silly fun? With Lindy West’s signature wit and in her uniquely incendiary voice, THE WITCHES ARE COMING lays out a grand theory of America that explains why Trump’s election was, in many ways, a foregone conclusion.
As West reveals through fascinating journeys across the landscapes of pop culture, the lies that fostered the catastrophic resentment that boiled over in the 2016 presidential race did not spring from a vacuum. They have in fact been woven into America’s DNA, cultivated by generations of mediocre white men and fed to the masses with such fury that we have become unable to recognize them as lies at all.
Whether it be the notion overheard since the earliest moments of the #MeToo movement that feminism has gone too far or the insistence that holding someone accountable for his actions amounts to a “witch hunt,” THE WITCHES ARE COMING exposes the lies that many have chosen to believe and the often unexpected figures who have furthered them. Along the way, it unravels the tightening link between culture and politics, identifying in the memes, music, and movies we’ve loved the seeds of the neoreactionary movement now surging through the nation.
Sprawling, funny, scorching, and illuminating, THE WITCHES ARE COMING shows West at the top of her intellectual and comic powers. As much a celebration of America’s potential as a condemnation of our failures, some will call it a witch hunt. To which West would reply, so be it: “I’m a witch and I’m hunting you.”

RECOMMENDED: This Side of Murder by Anna Lee Huber is $1.99! Did you catch Huber on the podcast? Sarah has been a huge fan of Huber’s historical mysteries and had this to say:
If you like smart, clever, extremely competent women sleuths with a handful of secrets and a crap ton of inner resilience this is a terrific start to a mystery series. Good for fans of Huber’s other series, and of historical mysteries.
The Great War is over, but in this captivating new mystery from award-winning author Anna Lee Huber, one young widow discovers the real intrigue has only just begun . . .
England, 1919. Verity Kent’s grief over the loss of her husband pierces anew when she receives a cryptic letter, suggesting her beloved Sidney may have committed treason before his untimely death. Determined to dull her pain with revelry, Verity’s first impulse is to dismiss the derogatory claim. But the mystery sender knows too much—including the fact that during the war, Verity worked for the Secret Service, something not even Sidney knew.Lured to Umbersea Island to attend the engagement party of one of Sidney’s fellow officers, Verity mingles among the men her husband once fought beside, and discovers dark secrets—along with a murder clearly meant to conceal them. Relying on little more than a coded letter, the help of a dashing stranger, and her own sharp instincts, Verity is forced down a path she never imagined—and comes face to face with the shattering possibility that her husband may not have been the man she thought he was. It’s a truth that could set her free—or draw her ever deeper into his deception . . .

The Highland Fling by Meghan Quinn is $1.99 at Amazon! This is a contemporary romance with a grumpy Scottish hero. I’ve always been curious about Quinn’s contemporary romances. Would you recommend them?
In this steamy tale by USA Today bestselling author Meghan Quinn, an American searching for her purpose escapes to a Scottish town but finds more questions than answers when she meets a brooding yet handsome handyman.
Freshly fired from her third job in a row, Bonnie St. James has lost her way. So when she and her best friend stumble upon a “help wanted” post to run a coffee shop in the Scottish Highlands, they apply on a whim. Who knows? Maybe traveling to a new place is just what she needs to figure out her next move.
When the friends arrive in the tiny idyllic town of Corsekelly, they instantly fall for the gorgeous Highland landscape and friendly townspeople. But Bonnie finds a less-than-warm welcome in Rowan MacGregor, the rugged local handyman. Busy wrestling his own demons, Rowan’s in no mood to deal with the quirky American—even if she is a bonny lass.
As Bonnie and Rowan’s paths inevitably cross, insults—and sparks—fly. Can the pair build on their similarities to help each other find purpose and direction…and maybe romance too? Or will their passionate tempers fling them apart?

I’d never read Meghan Quinn until I decided to try THE HIGHLAND FLING because Scotland and I needed something light. I was pleasantly surprised enough to add a bunch more Meghan Quinn to Mount TBR. It was light and amusing but also had some substance. If that sounds good to you, I recommend it.
Also, it goes without saying (right?) that GET A LIFE, CHLOE BROWN is a must-read for nearly everyone. I library-read it, then bought it on both a previous ebook sale and an audiobook sale.
Yes! Talia Hibbert is an auto buy for me, and this is one of her best!
The DR. GRETA HELSING books by Vivian Shaw are all $1.99 on kindle & kobo (except book 1 is $2.99 on kobo for some reason). I enjoyed these when they first came out 🙂 I got them from the library, will pick them up on sale!
ALL THE COLORS OF THE NIGHT by Jayne Ann Krentz is $1.99 – book 2 of the Fogg Lake series. Standard JAK disclaimers apply.
OBSIDIAN PREY by Jayne Castle is $2.99 – book 7 in the Harmony series. Standard JAK disclaimers apply here as well.
@Penny: Thanks for the Vivian Shaw news. I own books 2 and 3 in audio, would love to have the text.
I adored the Dr Greta Helsing books, not too scary, with a lovely slow burn romance.
And no s’mores are not a thing over here except as an imported idea we have to have explained to us. Even then some of us are bemused that adult eat them, because marshmallows are disgustingly sweet.
This review made me buy the book because it has 116 likes & WTF. People are idiots and I just can’t anymore…
“I have read and loved many of Quinn’s books. However, she has recently ramped up pushing the gay agenda.”
https://www.amazon.com/review/R1FLCWXO4WZ9A9/ref=cm_cr_srp_d_rdp_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B08LKBY9MN
Get a Life is so good that I ended up paying full ebook price for it, something I had never done before or since. I was more than half way through my library ebook copy and it borked. I tried every troubleshooting method possible (and that’s actually part of my job at the library!). I waited a day. And then I just bought it because I could not wait any longer. Totally worth it. It is a kind and glorious embrace of a book.
@Sara, Meghan Quinn is married to a woman, so even better. She’s not an autobuy for me, but I like her books. I’ve seen this book come up on sale a lot, and this review finally got me to buy it too!
Minority viewpoint but this is not my favorite Hibbert. I still totally liked it. It’s just that I like all the others too.
Everyone is going to have better and worse books but with some authors that doesn’t even feel relevant, because they’re so good. It’s like, her books are going to work for me, why am I even bothering to rank how well?
@Sara: People who unironically say things like “the gay agenda” are very organized. They go to their little hate groups on Facebook or Reddit and say, “I left a review (for literally anything) showcasing my bigotry, go upvote it so it’s the top review,” and more people than would ever organically click on a normal review go in a swarm and click their support. That’s why there are so many “most helpful” reviews like that one and the ones by people who are incensed SFF isn’t the exclusionary clubhouse they want it to be.
They don’t care that, if anything, it helps sales because a nonzero number of people who see it will say “ah, pissing off all the right people, I see” and buy it solely on that basis. They just want the token visible victory of their opinions appearing popular, which is easily achieved because nobody else is playing that ridiculous game.
@Lena Brassard/Ren Benton This makes me so sad. Maybe today is just a bad day, but the fact that someone would do that and then other people would follow blindly is heartbreaking. That sounds naïve, I’m aware. But none of it makes any sense. ::throwing my hands up dramatically::
Not a romance, but if you’re interested in an amazing memoir: Lilyville by actress Tovah Feldshuh is $3.99 in Kindle (not sure for how long–I’ve been waiting forever for it to price reduce on my wishlist).
This was my favorite memoir I read last year. I mostly know Feldshuh from Law and Order (the OG ones) and the movie Kissing Jessica Stein. The subtitle is “Mother, Daughter, and Other Roles I’ve Played”, and this is literally a love letter to her mother. It’s gorgeous and funny and fascinating, and I highly recommend. FYI I originally checked it out from the library to hear Feldshuh narrate it which is amazing, but I’m so glad to have the ebook too (photos!).
Two Camilla Isley books are free today, according to BookBub, To The Stars and Back and Opposites Attract. Pretty sure I’ve seen reviews of her books here.
@Sara- I’m with you, people are the worst and some days it hits me so hard that anyone could be so hateful that they organize around spreading their bigotry to others.
But… you just got at least three more people (like me!) to buy her book that might not have by exposing that hateful review to this amazing community, where we say – as @Lena Brassard/Ren Benton put it:
“ah, pissing off all the right people, I see”! So I’m taking this as a win for the good guys, because if I don’t look at it like that I’ll just give up. <3
@Sara Thanks for commenting about the hateful review. I one-clicked the book. Take that, haters!
I read at least four books of an endlessly terrible New Adult fantasy series because they kept hinting that a threesome was going to happen at some point. Then it happened and it was beyond disappointing. The Goodreads reviews are overwhelmingly by people who are just so shocked and disappointed that the author wrote a threesome scene and ruined the OTP and they’re not going to read any more books by that author. And I was over here thinking it was a very poorly written threesome, like the pervert I am.
Not at all the same as someone nastily complaining about “the gay agenda” but it made me wonder who these people are that take the time to read these books and write absurd reviews for them.
Thanks for the Meghan Quinn recommendation. I just did my part to support ~The Gay Agenda~.
@Darlynne would you recommend the audio? Yay I’m happy to help!
@Jazzlet I felt the same, iirc!
@kkw I know what you mean about ranking… even if my preference differs about the exact order, there are some authors who I just always know will work for me… authors I trust, I guess.
@Penny: Yes, I really enjoyed the audio book. If you have the Audible credits or if your library carries it, I think you’ll be pleased.
I barely skimmed the Quinn blurb because it seemed like it was featured on this site relatively recently (last couple months maybe?) and I remembered thinking “oh, this sounds like it could be good, but I’m already buried in tbr and juggling library holds.” But thank you commenters (especially @Sara) because I never want to pass up a chance to poke at homophobes (or bigots or racists, for that matter.)

I also bought the Quinn, in solidarity. 🙂
The Witches are Coming was very good.
