  • The Hollow of Fear

The Hollow of Fear by Sherry Thomas

RECOMMENDED: The Hollow of Fear by Sherry Thomas is $1.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! This is the third book the Lady Sherlock series, which probably needs to be read in order. Sarah gave it a B+:

I will keep recommending this series, as it is so layered with opportunities to examine it. It can be read as a mystery, as a historical novel with found family, as an examination of sexism and societal limitations on women, and how those limitations are subverted in acceptable and unacceptable ways, or as a study of those outside the boundaries of high society and how they survive with disguises built of behavior.

Charlotte Holmes, Lady Sherlock, returns in the Victorian-set mystery series from the USA Today bestselling author of A Conspiracy in Belgravia and A Study in Scarlet Women, an NPR Best Book of 2016.

Under the cover of “Sherlock Holmes, consulting detective,” Charlotte Holmes puts her extraordinary powers of deduction to good use. Aided by the capable Mrs. Watson, Charlotte draws those in need to her and makes it her business to know what other people don’t. When her dear friend Lord Ingram stands accused of the murder of his estranged wife, Charlotte goes under disguise to help prove his innocence to Scotland Yard.

  • What If You & Me

What If You & Me by Roni Loren

What If You & Me by Roni Loren is $1.99! This is another KDD. This is an emotional contemporary romance with both characters dealing with trauma and anxiety. I liked this series (there are two connected books with different characters) and it looks like a third has been announced.

The world can be a scary place. At least, that’s what Andi Lockley’s anxiety wants her to believe. It doesn’t help that she narrowly escaped a dangerous man years ago, or that every relationship since has been colored with that lingering fear. But things are better now―she’s channeling everything into her career as a horror novelist and true crime podcaster, and her next book may be the breakthrough she needs.

If only her grumpy new neighbor would stop stomping around at all hours of the night.

Former firefighter Hill Dawson can’t sleep. After losing part of his leg in a rescue gone wrong, he’s now stuck in limbo. He needs to figure out what he’s supposed to do with his life, and he can’t let himself get distracted by the pretty redhead next door. But when someone breaks into Andi’s place, Hill can’t stop himself from rushing in to play the hero. Soon, a tentative bond forms between the unlikely pair. But what starts out as a neighborly exchange quickly turns into the chance for so much more…if Andi can learn to put aside her fear and trust in herself―and love―again.

New York Times and USA Today bestseller Roni Loren blends heat and heart in this emotionally charged story.

  • Rookie Move

    Rookie Move by Sarina Bowen

Rookie Move by Sarina Bowen is $2.99! This is book one in the Brooklyn Bruisers series about a hockey team. Both Elyse and I have enjoyed books in this series, though I think we both agree that the second book, Hard Hitter is our favorite. Readers loved the second chance romance in this book, but found the pacing in the first half a bit slow.

The first novel in a sexy new series featuring the hockey players of the Brooklyn Bruisers and the women who win their hearts—from the USA Today bestselling author of the Ivy Years series.

In high school they were the perfect couple—until the day Georgia left Leo in the cold…

Hockey player Leo Trevi has spent the last six years trying to do two things: get over the girl who broke his heart, and succeed in the NHL. But on the first day he’s called up to the newly franchised Brooklyn Bruisers, Leo gets checked on both sides, first by the team’s coach—who has a long simmering grudge, and then by the Bruisers’ sexy, icy publicist—his former girlfriend Georgia Worthington.

Saying goodbye to Leo was one of the hardest things Georgia ever had to do—and saying hello again isn’t much easier. Georgia is determined to keep their relationship strictly professional, but when a press conference microphone catches Leo declaring his feelings for her, things get really personal, really fast….

  • The Windham Brides: Books 1-3

The Windham Brides: Books 1-3 by Grace Burrowes

The Windham Brides Boxed Set by Grace Burrowes is $2.99! This set collects the first three books in this historical romance series. I want to say at least one of these has been reviewed, but I can’t remember. Have you read any of these?

The first three books in this New York Times bestselling Regency romance series are now in a special collection perfect for binging and hailed as “terrific” by Bridgerton author Julia Quinn.

    THE TROUBLE WITH DUKES:
They call him the Duke of Murder. The gossips whisper that the new Duke of Murdoch is a brute, a murderer, and even worse–a Scot. They say he should never be trusted alone with a woman. But Megan Windham sees in Hamish something different, someone different.

    TOO SCOT TO HANDLE
As a captain in the army, Colin MacHugh led men, fixed what was broken, and fought hard. Now that he’s a titled gentleman, he’s still fighting — this time to keep his bachelorhood safe from all the marriage-minded debutantes. Then he meets the intriguing Miss Anwen Windham. Anwen is amazed at how quickly Lord Colin takes in hand a pack of rambunctious orphan boys. Amazed at the thrill she gets from the rumble of his Scottish burr and the heat of his touch. But she doesn’t know Colin has enemies who will stop at nothing to ruin him and anybody he holds dear.

    NO OTHER DUKE WILL DO
Julian St. David, Duke of Haverford, has a long-term plan to restore the family finances, but his sister has a much faster solution: host a house party for London’s single young ladies and find Julian a wealthy bride. Elizabeth Windham has no interest in marriage, but a recent scandal has forced her hand. As the two spend more time together, their attraction is overwhelming, unexpected… and absolutely impossible. With meddling siblings, the threat of financial ruin, and gossips lurking behind every potted palm, will they find true love or true disaster?

Two Carina Adores LGBTQ+ romances are on sale for $1.99 right now, which is a great price, since they’re both usually $9.99.

D’Vaughn and Kris Plan a Wedding by Chencia C. Higgins (I read it and loved it after reading Shana’s and Tara’s review)

Sink or Swim by Annabeth Albert

  2. Loramir says:

I’ve read the first in the Windham Brides series and enjoyed it a lot! Definitely recommended!

I paused after that to go back and read (…and then immediately re-read) the first 3 of the related Windham series, since those characters show up, and loved those as well. But I’m definitely going back to the Windham Brides soon.

I’ve only recently gotten around to trying Grace Burrowes but she’s quickly becoming a favorite. I like her strong heroines, close-knit families, and men who are comfortable showing emotion and affection, including to each other. She’s also good at humor and banter but without going too far into the wacky slapstick realm. In The Trouble With Dukes, Hamish’s intentional mangling of all Megan’s protective male relatives’ titles (and their enjoyment of it at each other’s expense) is a great running joke.

My only minor complaint is there’s quite a lot of appearances by characters from her other books/series, sometimes without a lot of context, but it doesn’t take anything away and mostly just makes me want to read her whole back catalogue ASAP to get to those characters’ interesting-sounding stories.

  3. MaryK says:

I like Grace Burrowes, but I find her writing style distracting. She alternates paragraphs of dialog and exposition in a way that’s too regular for my pattern loving brain. I keep buying her books when they’re on sale though.

  4. Laura George says:

@MaryK I agree with you about the general regularity of Burrowes’s writing – it also gets in the way for me. In terms of speech patterns, I always seems to be that every character sounds like every other character and they all sound like the narrator. I know everyone’s mileage will vary, but even when her plots sound promising, her writing is just not my cup of tea.

  5. Msb says:

Amanda, your description of the Charlotte Homes series is perfect. That blend is why I keep reading, despite the occasional verbal clangers….
    Thanks!
