  • This Earl of Mine

This Earl of Mine by Kate Bateman

This Earl of Mine by Kate Bateman is $2.99! This is the first book in a rather new historical romance series. I gave this one a B-, because while the leads were great together, there were a lot of other distracting plot threads. Elyse loved the second one and I would definitely recommend the series, despite my quibbles.

Introducing the Bow Street Bachelors—men who work undercover for London’s first official police force—and the women they serve to protect. . .and wed?

    WILL A FALSE MARRIAGE

Shipping heiress Georgiana Caversteed is done with men who covet her purse more than her person. Even worse than the ton’s lecherous fortune hunters, however, is the cruel cousin determined to force Georgie into marriage. If only she could find a way to be . . . widowed? Georgie hatches a madcap scheme to wed a condemned criminal before he’s set to be executed. All she has to do is find an eligible bachelor in prison to marry her, and she’ll be free. What could possibly go wrong?

LEAD TO TRUE AND LASTING LOVE?

Benedict William Henry Wylde, scapegrace second son of the late Earl of Morcott and well-known rake, is in Newgate prison undercover, working for Bow Street. Georgie doesn’t realize who he is when she marries him—and she most certainly never expects to bump into her very-much-alive, and very handsome, husband of convenience at a society gathering weeks later. Soon Wylde finds himself courting his own wife, hoping to win her heart since he already has her hand. But how can this seductive rogue convince brazen, beautiful Georgie that he wants to be together…until actual death do they part?

  • The View Was Exhausting

The View Was Exhausting by Mikaella Clements

The View Was Exhausting by Mikaella Clements and Onjuli Datta $2.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! I mentioned this one on a previous Get Rec’d for hardcover romance readers. Lots of tropes here – fake dating, celebrities, and friends to lovers.

Daisy Jones and the Six meets Crazy Rich Asians in this escapist, swoon-worthy debut novel of a famous actress embroiled in a fake tabloid romance, confronting the challenges of being a woman of color in Hollywood and the notion that she might actually be in love.

Faking a love story is a whole lot easier than being in love . . .

The world can see that international A-list actress Whitman (“Win”) Tagore and jet-setting playboy Leo Milanowski are made for each other. Their kisses start Twitter trends and their fights break the internet. From red carpet appearances to Met Gala mishaps, their on-again, off-again romance has titillated the public and the press for almost a decade. But it’s all a lie.

As a woman of color, Win knows the Hollywood deck is stacked against her, so she’s perfected the art of controlling her public persona. Whenever she nears scandal, she calls in Leo, with his endearingly reckless attitude, for a staged date. Each public display of affection shifts the headlines back in Win’s favor, and Leo uses the good press to draw attention away from his dysfunctional family.

But pretending to be in a passionate romance can only lead to one thing . . . trouble. So instead they settle for friendship, with a side of sky-rocketing chemistry. Except this time, on the French Riviera, something is off. A shocking secret in Leo’s past sets Win’s personal and professional lives on a catastrophic collision course. Behind the scenes of their yacht-trips and PDA, the world’s favorite couple is at each other’s throats. Now they must finally confront the many truths and lies of their relationship, and Win is forced to consider what is more important: a rising career, or a risky shot at real love?

THE VIEW WAS EXHAUSTING is a funny, whip-smart modern love story set against the backdrop of exotic locales and the realities of being a woman of color in a world run by men.

  • A Lesson in Vengeance

A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee

A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee is $2.99 and another KDD! This is a spooky YA novel. Aarya mentioned this is in August 2021’s Hide Your Wallet. She said it may be too scary for her tastes, but she also might risk her sleep for it.

For fans of Wilder Girls and Ninth House, comes a dark, twisty, atmospheric thriller about a boarding school haunted by its history of witchcraft and two girls dangerously close to digging up the past.

Witchcraft is woven into the Dalloway School’s history. The school doesn’t talk about it, but the students do. And most memorable of all is the Dalloway Five–five students who all died mysteriously one after another, who some say were witches.

Before her girlfriend’s tragic death, Felicity Morrow was drawn to the dark. But after a year away from Dalloway’s ivy-covered campus, she’s determined to leave all that behind her, focus on her senior thesis, and graduate. Only it’s hard when Dalloway’s occult history is everywhere. And when the new girl won’t let her forget.

It’s Ellis Haley’s first year at Dalloway, and she’s already amassed a loyal following. A prodigy novelist at seventeen, Ellis is eccentric and brilliant, and Felicity can’t shake the pull she feels to her. So when Ellis asks Felicity for help researching the Dalloway Five for her second book, Felicity can’t say no. Given her history with the arcane, Felicity is the perfect resource. And when history begins to repeat itself, Felicity will have to face the darkness in Dalloway–and in herself.

  • The Chocolate Touch

The Chocolate Touch by Laura Florand

RECOMMENDEDThe Chocolate Touch by Laura Florand is $1.99! This contemporary romance was a Sizzling Book Club pick in September 2013. For many, Florand is an auto-buy author and the descriptions of chocolate were downright dangerous. A few readers felt that some scenes dialed up the angst too high though.

    La Vie en Chocolat

Dominique Richard’s reputation says it all–wild past, wilder flavors, black leather and smoldering heat. Jaime Corey is hardly the first woman to be drawn to all that dark, delicious danger. Sitting in Dom’s opulent chocolaterie in Paris day after day, she lets his decadent creations restore her weary body and spirit, understanding that the man himself is entirely beyond her grasp.

Until he touches her. . .

Chocolate, Dominique understands–from the biting tang of lime-caramel to the most complex infusions of jasmine, lemon-thyme, and cayenne. But this shy, freckled American who sits alone in his salon, quietly sampling his exquisite confections as if she can’t get enough of them–enough of him–is something else. She has secrets too, he can tell. Of course if she really knew him, she would run.

Yet once you have spotted your heart’s true craving, simply looking is no longer enough. . .

  3. Vicki says:

I really enjoyed A Lesson in Veangance, re-read it, thought about it later. It has the Gothic vibe down pat and is suspenseful and even a bit scary.

  4. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Empress of Blandings: HARD-PRESSED is very good. It has great depictions of consent along with a wonderful female friendship between the heroine and her friend Brooke (the heroine of the next book, FAR CRY). Highly recommended—and the price is right.

  5. Lisa F says:

    My pick’s the Bateman!

  6. Mzcue says:

Laura Florand is a superb author. The Chocolate Touch offers seduction by flavor, sizzling love scenes, and chocolate. Exquisite.

  7. wingednike says:

The Chocolate Touch is my favorite after the introductory novella. I find the main characters so sweet (pun intended).

  8. Susan/DC says:

re the Bateman: MJ Putney has a similar trope (heroine needs to be married but doesn’t want to be so marries someone she thinks will die soon) in “The Would-be Widow” but I liked the Putney more because the characters seemed more realistic and there’s also a lovely secondary romance. This one is OK and has some good parts (liked that it realistically portrays how difficult it was to get an annulment), but too much mental lusting to the point I was a bit bored. However, it wasn’t bad, and since Elyse loved the second book in the series, I may try that one.

  9. Dreamingintrees says:

Lesson In Vengeance has a dedication that l loved so much that l think others in the bitchery will also find resonate: “For coffee stained girls in libraries”
