Tokyo Ever After

Tokyo Ever After by Emiko Jean is $2.99! This has been featured on the side for both Book Beat and Hide Your Wallet. Definite Princess Diaries vibes here in the best way!
The Princess Diaries meets Crazy Rich Asians in Emiko Jean’s Tokyo Ever After, the irresistible story of an ordinary Japanese-American girl who discovers that her father is the Crown Prince of Japan!
Izumi Tanaka has never really felt like she fit in—it isn’t easy being Japanese American in her small, mostly white, northern California town. Raised by a single mother, it’s always been Izumi—or Izzy, because “It’s easier this way”—and her mom against the world. But then Izumi discovers a clue to her previously unknown father’s identity…and he’s none other than the Crown Prince of Japan. Which means outspoken, irreverent Izzy is literally a princess.
In a whirlwind, Izumi travels to Japan to meet the father she never knew and discover the country she always dreamed of. But being a princess isn’t all ball gowns and tiaras. There are conniving cousins, a hungry press, a scowling but handsome bodyguard who just might be her soulmate, and thousands of years of tradition and customs to learn practically overnight.
Izumi soon finds herself caught between worlds, and between versions of herself—back home, she was never “American” enough, and in Japan, she must prove she’s “Japanese” enough. Will Izumi crumble under the weight of the crown, or will she live out her fairy tale, happily ever after?

A Touch of Darkness by Scarlett St. Clair is 99c! This is a Hades & Persephone fantasy romance that skews more toward the erotic side. I know St. Clair gained a huge following in some of the self-pub/indie pub spaces. Have you read anything by her? Thoughts?

Boston Fire: Volume 1 by Shannon Stacey is $2.99! For less than $3, you get three full-length contemporary romances with firefighting heroes. Not bad! If you bought this one previously, the second volume is also on sale.
Meet the men of Boston Fire in three smoking hot firefighter romances by New York Times bestselling author Shannon Stacey!
Heat Exchange
Lydia Kincaid left Boston to get away from the firefighting community—her father was a firefighter, her brother’s a firefighter and, more importantly, her ex is a firefighter. But her father needs her help and soon, Lydia finds it hard to resist the familiar comfort—and even harder to resist her brother’s handsome friend Aidan.
Aidan Hunt is a firefighter because of the Kincaid family. He’s had the hots for Lydia for years, but if ever a woman was off-limits to him it’s her. As Aidan and Lydia’s flirtation turns into something more serious, Lydia knows she should be planning her escape. And Aidan can’t imagine walking away from Boston Fire—even for Lydia. The job and the brotherhood are his life; but if he wants Lydia in it, he’ll have to decide who’s first in his heart.
Controlled Burn
Rick Gullotti lives the good life. He fights fires, dates beautiful women, and has great friends. And thanks to helping out the elderly couple who own his building, his rent is low. But when concerns about their health lead him to meet their granddaughter, life starts getting away from him.
Jessica Broussard was unprepared for Boston’s frigid winter and the hot, scruffy firefighter who lives upstairs from her grandparents. At first, Jessica is determined to get back to her comfortable life as quickly as possible. All she has to do is talk her grandparents into selling their monstrosity of a house and moving to a retirement community. But she underestimates Rick’s dedication—and his considerable charm.
Fully Ignited
When Jamie Rutherford takes a temporary assignment as lieutenant of Boston Fire’s Engine 59, she doesn’t anticipate any problems. She’s fairly new to Boston, she knows how to make any firehouse her home. What she’s not prepared for is her reaction to firefighter Scott Kincaid.
Scott is looking for a wife. It’s been a fun ride as a single guy, but he’s tired of being the third wheel, and nearly losing his brother-in-law finally made him realize just how much he wants a family of his own. Hooking up with a fellow firefighter has never been part of Jamie’s plan, but she’s tempted by Scott—even though getting involved with him could tarnish the reputation she’s worked so hard for. And Scott can’t stop thinking about Jamie, despite the fact that she’s his superior and not sticking around.

What is up with all the Persephone and Hades romances lately?! I love it! My sophomore year of high school we spent a semester on Greek mythology so I’ve always loved it and will read any retelling I come across.
Tokyo Ever After appears to be full price at Amazon and Apple at $10.99. At least at the time I am writing this comment…
Melissa
@Erin Curry: I think they’re riding the trend of Lore Olympus, Rachel Smythe’s lush soap opera of a webcomic that retells the Hades and Persephone myth in a “modern” Olympus. He’s a Sad Businessman with a bucket of trauma! She’s a sweet Sheltered Heiress with a terrible secret! Also she’s pink and he’s blue! It’s incredibly popular — more people are subscribed to Lore Olympus on WEBTOON than to all DC and Marvel comics combined. The dead tree version of Volume One is an NYT bestseller, and Netflix is in talks to adapt it for streaming. (CWs: rape – not by our hero – toxic relationships, trauma, problematic age gap.)
While there are certainly bigger leaps required in romance, the premise of Tokyo Ever After makes my eyes roll a bit. There’s no way under the royal system of that country that this girl would be considered a princess – see the case of Princess Mako as an example.
@Ms M, that totally turned me off, too. Japan’s monarchy is incredibly strict! The idea that there’s a secret princess out there somewhere is just impossible.
I found the Boston Fire trilogy fun, if a bit dated – very easy reads. My favorite was Fully Ignited, interesting seeing the profession from a female perspective.
The reviews for A Touch of Darkness are not very good on Amazon. Are there other Hades and Persephone retellings that you would recommend? I’d prefer them not set in our modern world but will take what I can get.
An Inconvenient Duke is a decent read. The others in the series are not quite as good.
Re: Jen
Meg Cabot has done a YA Hades & Persephone retelling in her trilogy starting with “Abandon”. It is modern, but I liked the unusual Key West setting.
Non-modern Hades and Persephone graphic novel – Punderworld by Linda Sejic. It’s available on Webtoon, unfinished and currently on hiatus. I enjoyed the gorgeous illustrations and humor.
@Jen: I can recommend two dark contemporary romances that use the Hades & Persephone myth as a starting point: Natasha Knight’s DESCENT and Amelia Wilde’s Hades & Persephone trilogy: KING OF SHADOWS, SUMMER QUEEN, MIDNIGHT KINGDOM. I like dark, but please keep in mind that these are very dark (especially the Wilde) with all of the themes of dark romance (dub-con, non-con, pain infliction, etc.).
There is also an f/f retelling, The Dark Wife by Sarah Diemer.
KING OF SHADOWS, the first book in the Amelia Wilde Hades & Persephone trilogy I mentioned in my comment above, is currently free in the Kindle Store.
Thank you for all the recommendations! I downloaded the first book King of Shadows!
R. Lee Smith has a brilliant retelling called Land of the Beautiful Dead. Actually, better to call it a reimagining loosely inspired by Hades/Persephone . The ‘god’ of the dead has taken over the earth after a nuclear apocalypse and keeps a living woman in his city of the dead after they strike a deal to that helps to protect the living. It’s phenomenal.
