  • A Splindle Splintered

A Splindle Splintered by Alix Harrow

RECOMMENDED: A Spindle Splintered by Alix E. Harrow is $2.99! This may be a leftover Kindle Daily Deal and could expire. I’m currently 6 hours ahead which throws KDD sales off for me – sorry! Tara gave this one an A-:

I’m a gigantic sucker for retellings, whether they’re of fairy tales, myths, or classic novels, and A Spindle Splintered might be my favourite so far. Its take on a multiverse feels fresh because there are no superheroes, only badass girls saving themselves.

USA Today bestselling author Alix E. Harrow’s A Spindle Splintered brings her patented charm to a new version of a classic story.

It’s Zinnia Gray’s twenty-first birthday, which is extra-special because it’s the last birthday she’ll ever have. When she was young, an industrial accident left Zinnia with a rare condition. Not much is known about her illness, just that no one has lived past twenty-one.

Her best friend Charm is intent on making Zinnia’s last birthday special with a full sleeping beauty experience, complete with a tower and a spinning wheel. But when Zinnia pricks her finger, something strange and unexpected happens, and she finds herself falling through worlds, with another sleeping beauty, just as desperate to escape her fate.

  • After Dark with the Duke

After Dark with the Duke by Julie Anne Long

RECOMMENDED: After Dark with the Duke by Julie Anne Long is $1.99! Thanks to everyone who let us know about this sale. Lara gave this one a Squee grade:

This romance just hit too many of my favourite buttons for me to be objective. For me, the highest praise I can give a romance novel is that it is original, and this book is that in every possible sense. Do not hesitate over that one-click button; I can guarantee reading satisfaction. Oh, to read this book again for the first time. I swoon!

Sparks fly when a daring diva clashes with an ice-cold war hero in the newest thrilling romance in USA Today bestselling author Julie Anne Long’s Palace of Rogues series.

She arrives in the dead of night, a mob out for blood at her heels: Mariana Wylde, the “Harlot of Haywood Street,” an opera diva brought low by a duel fought for her favors. But the ladies of the Grand Palace on the Thames think they can make a silk purse from scandal: They’ll restore her reputation and share in her triumph…provided they can keep her apart from that other guest.

Coldly brilliant, fiercely honorable, General James Duncan Blackmore, the Duke of Valkirk, is revered, feared, desired…but nobody truly knows him. Until a clash with a fiery, vulnerable beauty who stands for everything he scorns lays him bare. It’s too clear the only cure for consuming desire is conquest, but their only chance at happiness could lead to their destruction.

The legendary duke never dreamed love would be his last battleground. Valkirk would lay down his life for Mariana, but his choice is stark: risk losing her forever, or do the one thing he vowed he never would…surrender.

  • Like Lovers Do

Like Lovers Do by Tracey Livesay

Like Lovers Do by Tracey Livesay is $1.99! Carrie reviewed this one and gave it C+, though notes there is an “evil ex” and everyone could have benefited from therapy. However, there were some good parts:

This book is very descriptive: the dreamy vacations are dreamy, the sex is hot, and many of the issues that are present deserve exploration.

Tracey Livesay continues her fun-filled Girls Trip series with this romance that will tug at your heartstrings.

Sometimes faking it can lead to the real thing…

Driven and focused, Dr. Nicole Allen is an accomplished surgeon. With a tough past, Nic’s gone above and beyond everyone’s expectations. But when she disciplines an intern—a powerful donor’s son—a prestigious fellowship she’s awaiting is placed in jeopardy.

Coming from a successful family who runs a medical business empire, Benjamin Reed Van Mont is the black sheep, having chosen to start his own business instead. Though he’s not ready to settle down, he knows when the time comes it definitely won’t be with a workaholic doctor like his friend Nic—even if she’s had him re-examining his edict…more than once.

When Ben’s status-climbing ex-girlfriend finds her way back into his orbit, Nic proposes a swap of services. She’ll spend the week with Ben on Martha’s Vineyard, pretending to be his girlfriend—but only if he’ll have his family intervene on her behalf so she won’t lose her fellowship. How hard can the charade be?

But as they’re about to discover, they’ve sorely underestimated their true feelings for each other…

  • Thorn

    Thorn by Intisar Khanani

Thorn by Intisar Khanani is $1.99! I believe this falls more into YA than adult fantasy, but please correct me if I’m wrong. We don’t have a review of this one up, but it has the Sneezy stamp of approval. She’s mentioned it several times on site and I believe read it before it was picked up by a traditional publisher.

A princess with two futures. A destiny all her own

Between her cruel family and the contempt she faces at court, Princess Alyrra has always longed to escape the confines of her royal life. But when she’s betrothed to the powerful prince Kestrin, Alyrra embarks on a journey to his land with little hope for a better future.

When a mysterious and terrifying sorceress robs Alyrra of both her identity and her role as princess, Alyrra seizes the opportunity to start a new life for herself as a goose girl.

But Alyrra soon finds that Kestrin is not what she expected. The more Alyrra learns of this new kingdom, the pain and suffering its people endure, as well as the danger facing Kestrin from the sorceress herself, the more she knows she can’t remain the goose girl forever.

With the fate of the kingdom at stake, Alyrra is caught between two worlds and ultimately must decide who she is, and what she stands for.

A Spindle Splintered seems to still be on sale.

I read this earlier this year and really enjoyed it.

  2. Stephanie Peter says:

I adored Thorn, and went on to read every other book by Intisar Khanani. Strong female leads, great friendships, interesting new worlds and moral dilemmas. Highly recommend

  3. Darlynne says:

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed A SPINDLE SPLINTERED. Fairy tale re-imaginings don’t usually work for me, but this one was special.

  4. DonnaMarie says:

I’ll add to the love for A SPINDLE SPLINTERED. It was lovely in so many unexpected ways. Also, the perfect length for a trip to the Laundromat.

  5. EJ says:

AFTER DARK WITH THE DUKE is really great. Worth mentioning that there’s a considerable age difference between the protagonists, if that’s not your thing. It doesn’t really come up as an issue, possibly because it wouldn’t have been at the time. Despite the recognition of the power differentials between the main couple, it never feels like the hero exploits his considerable advantage.

The boarding house setting is a good time, with a lot of fun background characters.

  6. Kareni says:

@Amanda, I hope that you are having fun in Germany! Thanks for the list of sale books.

  7. GradStudentEscapist says:

After Dark with the Duke is swoon level romantic, I enjoyed an M/F HR after ages with this one. It is indeed fresh and a step above the usual fare.

  8. CK says:

Thanks you all for chiming in on A Splintered Spindle – I went and read the sample and it reads really well. Can’t wait to start it 🙂

  9. Virtual Light says:

Seconding the love for Thorn. I am now a Khanani fan. I have read every book of hers available and am eagerly waiting for her next book. It was so exciting for me not to be disappointed by a YA novel!!

She is just great at having her characters work through moral questions and make choices that affect their lives and futures in real ways. It feels real. Plus she created an interesting world with many subtleties.

If you liked The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden you may well enjoy Thorn. They have a similar vibe, though Thorn is a bit less intense.
