  • Ties That Tether

Ties That Tether by Jane Igharo

Ties That Tether by Jane Igharo is $1.99! Igharo’s covers have been featured in Cover Awe, though I don’t think we’ve had them on sale. I haven’t read this one, but based on the description it seems slightly more like women’s fiction where there are strong romantic elements but not necessarily the focus. Thoughts?

hen a Nigerian woman falls for a man she knows will break her mother’s heart, she must choose between love and her family.

At twelve years old, Azere promised her dying father she would marry a Nigerian man and preserve her culture even after emigrating to Canada. Her mother has been vigilant about helping–forcing–her to stay well within the Nigerian dating pool ever since. But when another match-made-by-mom goes wrong, Azere ends up at a bar, enjoying the company and later sharing the bed of Rafael Castellano, a man who is tall, handsome, and white.

When their one-night stand unexpectedly evolves into something serious, Azere is caught between her growing feelings for Rafael and the compulsive need to please her mother who will never accept a relationship that threatens to dilute Azere’s Nigerian heritage.

Azere can’t help wondering if loving Rafael makes her any less of a Nigerian. Can she be with him without compromising her identity? The answer will either cause Azere to be audacious and fight for her happiness or continue as the compliant daughter.

  • Hollow Kingdom

Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton

RECOMMENDEDHollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton is $2.99! Carrie gave this one an A-, but warns it’s definitely not a romance. Definitely skim her review to see if this book is right for you:

This book broke my heart but it also made me so happy.

One pet crow fights to save humanity from an apocalypse in this uniquely hilarious debut from a genre-bending literary author.

S.T., a domesticated crow, is a bird of simple pleasures: hanging out with his owner Big Jim, trading insults with Seattle’s wild crows (those idiots), and enjoying the finest food humankind has to offer: Cheetos ®.

Then Big Jim’s eyeball falls out of his head, and S.T. starts to feel like something isn’t quite right. His most tried-and-true remedies–from beak-delivered beer to the slobbering affection of Big Jim’s loyal but dim-witted dog, Dennis–fail to cure Big Jim’s debilitating malady. S.T. is left with no choice but to abandon his old life and venture out into a wild and frightening new world with his trusty steed Dennis, where he discovers that the neighbors are devouring each other and the local wildlife is abuzz with rumors of dangerous new predators roaming Seattle. Humanity’s extinction has seemingly arrived, and the only one determined to save it is a foul-mouthed crow whose knowledge of the world around him comes from his TV-watching education.

Hollow Kingdom is a humorous, big-hearted, and boundlessly beautiful romp through the apocalypse and the world that comes after, where even a cowardly crow can become a hero.

  • Yes & I Love You

Yes & I Love You by Roni Loren

Yes & I Love You by Roni Loren is $1.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! This is a contemporary romance by one of my absolute favorite authors. I remember hearing Loren discuss this book at the last RWA that was held in New York. The heroine has Tourette’s Syndrome and social anxiety, and Loren also mentioned her (Loren’s, not the heroine) son has a tic disorder. Have you read this one?

A beautifully emotional new contemporary romance from New York Times and USA Today bestseller Roni Loren.

Everyone knows Miz Poppy, the vibrant reviewer whose commentary brightens the New Orleans nightlife. But no one knows Hollyn, the real face behind the media star…or the fear that keeps her isolated. When her boss tells her she needs to add video to her blog or lose her job, she’s forced to rely on an unexpected source to help her face her fears.

When aspiring actor Jasper Deares finds out the shy woman who orders coffee every day is actually Miz Poppy, he realizes he has a golden opportunity to get the media attention his acting career needs. All he has to do is help Hollyn come out of her shell…and through their growing connection, finally find her voice.

  • Duke, Actually

    Duke, Actually by Jenny Holiday

Duke, Actually by Jenny Holiday is $1.99! This is a holiday romance that released in November. I remember Elyse reading it and commenting in Slack that she was enjoying it. I, sadly, don’t do holiday romances. What about you?

USA Today bestselling author Jenny Holiday follows A Princess for Christmas with another delightful contemporary Christmas romance between a playboy baron and a woman who has said goodbye to love.

There’s a royal wedding on, and things are about to get interesting.

    Meet the man of honor

Maximillian von Hansburg, Baron of Laudon and heir to the Duke of Aquilla, is not having a merry Christmas. He’s been dumped by a princess, he’s unemployed, and his domineering father has sent him to New York to meet a prospective bride he has no interest in. In the city, he meets Dani Martinez, a smart (and gorgeous) professor he’s determined to befriend before their best friends marry in the Eldovian wedding of the century.

    Meet the best woman

Newly single, no-nonsense New Yorker Dani is done with love—she even has a list entitled “Things I Will Never Again Do for a Man”—which is why she hits it off with notorious rake Max. He’s the perfect partner for snow angels in Central Park and deep conversations about the futility of love.

It’s all fun and games until their friendship deepens into attraction and, oops…

Falling in love was never part of the plan.

ALERT: Lord of Scoundrels is on sale! $1.99. I actually thought I already owned this, but I was wrong. *click!*

  2. Gail says:

I would not call Ties that Tether women’s fiction, but I also would not call Hoang’s Heart Principle women’s fiction either. So, ymmv. It is a more angsty romance than some might like, maybe. Like Heart Principle, family issues play a big part of the story. I like that in a romance, when the main character isn’t just part of a couple, which is maybe why I’d still call this a romance.

  3. Susan says:

I agree with Carrie that Hollow Kingdom was both hilarious and heartbreaking. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was a terrific match for the material, so I definitely recommend it for audiophiles. I wasn’t all that keen on the ending, but not to the point that it ruined the rest of the book for me. (I own the 2nd book but haven’t gotten to it yet, so can’t vouch for how things progress.)

  4. Lisa F says:

I liked all four of these; my favorite was “Yes, And I Love You.” Roni Loren is wonderful.

  5. DonnaMarie says:

I’ll plus one on THE HOLLOW KINGDOM. S.T. & Dennis are the heroes every zombie apocalypse has needed. I agree, the end did not work for me. I’ve been reluctant to read book two because I feel like what has to come next will break S.T. completely. I’ll give in eventually because I love that crow.

  6. omphale says:

Oooh, I loved Duke, Actually! Max and Dani COMMUNICATE so well! It’s fluffy in the best ways, like a down comforter!

(and this is a perfect test to confirm that Amazon’s Sort by Price feature is irrevocably useless, because…yep! did not show up on my wishlist.)

  7. Jcp says:

I found a web site that will help you track a price of a book you want.

    http://www.ereaderiq.com

Put a book in the search bar and it will give a history of the book’s price (at least for the last year sometimes longer)

You can put in the price you are willing to pay and the site will notify you.
    It’s free!

  8. Darlynne says:

@Jcp: eReaderIQ (and UK version) is a great source, but they rely on donations (also Patreon, IIRC) to stay afloat. Amazon doesn’t pay them any more for books brought through their links, which is really a crime IMO. Contributing is not required, they will still track your authors/titles faithfully; I just thought that should be mentioned.

  9. Gloriamarie Amalfitano says:

For whatever my opinion may be worth, I LOVED Hollow Kingdom and give it an A+. It is extremely well-written and there is an beautiful balance between the heart-breaking bits and the humorous bits. It is wonderful.

  10. Jcp says:

    Darlynne:

I think Amazon is being shortsighted in not paying the site but I did notice they do ask for donations.

  11. denise says:

    I enjoyed Duke, Actually.
