  • Iron Widow

Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao

RECOMMENDED: Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao is $4.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal. Carrie just reviewed this one and gave it a B+:

I loved the setting, the characters, the polyamorous romance, and the mecha stuff. This is an intriguing, exciting book and I can’t wait for the next one.

The boys of Huaxia dream of pairing up with girls to pilot Chrysalises, giant transforming robots that can battle the mecha aliens that lurk beyond the Great Wall. It doesn’t matter that the girls often die from the mental strain.

When 18-year-old Zetian offers herself up as a concubine-pilot, it’s to assassinate the ace male pilot responsible for her sister’s death. But she gets her vengeance in a way nobody expected—she kills him through the psychic link between pilots and emerges from the cockpit unscathed. She is labeled an Iron Widow, a much-feared and much-silenced kind of female pilot who can sacrifice boys to power up Chrysalises instead.

To tame her unnerving yet invaluable mental strength, she is paired up with Li Shimin, the strongest and most controversial male pilot in Huaxia. But now that Zetian has had a taste of power, she will not cower so easily. She will miss no opportunity to leverage their combined might and infamy to survive attempt after attempt on her life, until she can figure out exactly why the pilot system works in its misogynist way—and stop more girls from being sacrificed.

  • Anchored Hearts

    Anchored Hearts by Priscilla Oliveras

Anchored Hearts by Priscilla Oliveras is $1.99! This is book two in the Keys to Love series and has a second chance romance. This isn’t my favorite trope, but I enjoyed this book. If you like really emotional contemporaries, this will tick that box.

Key West is the ideal backdrop for the summer read you need! Perfect for fans of Abby Jimenez, Jasmine Guillory, and Jen DeLuca, this gorgeous and stirring new love story from the author of Island Affair will touch your heart…

Award-winning photographer Alejandro Miranda hasn’t been home to Key West in years–not since he left to explore broader horizons with his papi’s warning echoing in his ears. He wouldn’t be heading there now if it wasn’t for an injury requiring months of recuperation. The drama of a prodigal son returning to his familia is bad enough, but coming home to the island paradise also means coming face to face with the girl he left behind–the one who was supposed to be by his side all along…

Anamaría Navarro was shattered when Alejandro took off without her. Traveling the world was their plan, not just his. But after her father’s heart attack, there was no way she could leave–not even for the man she loved. Now ensconced in the family trade as a firefighter and paramedic, with a side hustle as a personal trainer, Anamaría is dismayed that just the sight of Alejandro is enough to rekindle the flame she’s worked years to put out. And as motherly meddling pushes them together, the heat of their attraction only climbs higher. Can they learn to trust again, before the Key West sun sets on their chance at happiness?

  • Don’t You Forget About Me

Don’t You Forget About Me by Mhairi McFarlane

Don’t You Forget About Me by Mhairi McFarlane is $1.99! This is a second chance contemporary romance, though the hero doesn’t seem to remember the heroine. Maybe there’s some amnesia here too? Have you read it?

Internationally bestselling author Mhairi McFarlane delivers a funny, romantic, heartfelt novel perfect for fans of Josie Silver or Sally Thorne, and anyone who loves Bridget Jones or Fleabag!

You always remember your first love… don’t you?

If there’s anything worse than being fired from the worst restaurant in town, it’s coming home early to find your boyfriend in bed with someone else. Reeling from the humiliation of a double dumping in one day, Georgina takes the next job that comes her way—bartender in a newly opened pub. There’s only one problem: it’s run by the guy she fell in love with years ago. And—make that two problems—he doesn’t remember her. At all. But she has fabulous friends and her signature hot pink fur coat… what more could a girl really need?

Lucas McCarthy has not only grown into a broodingly handsome man, but he’s also turned into an actual grown-up, with a thriving business and a dog along the way. Crossing paths with him again throws Georgina’s rocky present into sharp relief—and brings a secret from her past bubbling to the surface. Only she knows what happened twelve years ago, and why she’s allowed the memories to chase her ever since. But maybe it’s not too late for the truth… or a second chance with the one that got away?

  • The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires

The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix is $2.99! This is another Kindle Daily Deal. Carrie review this one and gave it a B:

Truthfully, if I had known what I was getting into, I doubt I would have read this book. And yet I’m so glad I did, because this, among other things, is a story about reading whatever the heck we want to read and the power of women when they decide to unite, both of which are themes that are Relevant to my Interests, Oh, Yeah.

Fried Green Tomatoes and Steel Magnolias meet Dracula in this Southern-flavored supernatural thriller set in the ’90s about a women’s book club that must protect its suburban community from a mysterious and handsome stranger who turns out to be a blood-sucking fiend.

Patricia Campbell had always planned for a big life, but after giving up her career as a nurse to marry an ambitious doctor and become a mother, Patricia’s life has never felt smaller. The days are long, her kids are ungrateful, her husband is distant, and her to-do list is never really done. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a group of Charleston mothers united only by their love for true-crime and suspenseful fiction. In these meetings, they’re more likely to discuss the FBI’s recent siege of Waco as much as the ups and downs of marriage and motherhood.

But when an artistic and sensitive stranger moves into the neighborhood, the book club’s meetings turn into speculation about the newcomer. Patricia is initially attracted to him, but when some local children go missing, she starts to suspect the newcomer is involved. She begins her own investigation, assuming that he’s a Jeffrey Dahmer or Ted Bundy. What she uncovers is far more terrifying, and soon she–and her book club–are the only people standing between the monster they’ve invited into their homes and their unsuspecting community.

  1. FashionablyEvil says:

I’ll just be hanging out here, waiting for the esteemed members of the Bitchery to let me know if I need to get any of these and/or if there are other books on sale I should know about.

  2. hng23 says:

THE SOUTHERN BOOK CLUB was one of my top five horror reads last year.
    Highly highly recommended.

  3. Leigh Kramer says:

Iron Widow was one of my favorites of 2021. I need book 2 asap!!

  4. Jcp says:

I if you are looking for anything by Shadow that publish Sarah M. Eden, Megan Walker, Julianne Donaldson( ie Edenbrooke) or anything that is published under The imprint Proper Romance. There is a big sale on ebooks that are usually 11.99 being slashed to 1.99. Edenbrooke has been on my wish list forever. Lani Blake has several ebooks on sale now. She writes small town romances.

  5. Penny says:

AN UNNATURAL VICE by KJ Charles is on sale for $4.99… like the sale last week on AN UNSUITABLE HEIR it is not the greatest discount, but worth it if you are missing this one in your ebook library…

  6. Emily B says:

I loved the McFarlane – it was the first book from her that I read, and it sent me down a deep dive or her back catalog and made her an auto read for me.

  7. Kate K.F. says:

I actually found Iron Widow kind of mixed, it felt like one of those action movies with great set ups and premise but if you look at it too hard, it doesn’t hold together. So I’d recommend going with reading a sample before buying because it has a particular voice that might not work for everyone.

  8. Jodi says:

Jumping on to recommend Iron Widow as we1l (reviewed it for Fanbase Press). 2021 had a lot of young adult female rage, which I responded to very well.

  9. Hollywollydoodle says:

Echoing Emily B’s experience with the McFarlane – I did the exact same thing. This was my first read from her catalog, and now I’ve read them all. Don’t You Forget About Me is definitely my favorite from today’s lineup.

  10. Georgina says:

I really enjoyed Don’t You Forget About Me, which I read on a whim because I never see heroines with my name but turned out to be great! Like Emily B, it got me into reading McFarlane’s backlist, but perhaps unlike Emily I didn’t enjoy the ones I tried as much at this one. They were good, don’t get me wrong, but DYFAM really hit the spot for me.

    Also, no amnesia.

  11. Sydneysider says:

Anchored Hearts was a very nice read.

  12. AtasB says:

Iron Widow was just fun and fine for me, not the greatness I’d seen it hyped as. I got it from the library when I couldn’t get off the couch very much due to post-holiday burnout and I will say I (normally a slow reader) got it done in two days flat. I found the first %50 or two thirds or so really exciting and fast, but then it kinda slowed into a somewhat indulgently written character/ship growth faze that maybe was necessary but didn’t work as well for me.
It’s probably just a bit young for me, tbh. But I am interested to read more and esp to see how the author grows in their writing over time. I have a feeling they’ll improve.
I don’t NOT recommend it, though, it’s definitely popular for a reason.

  13. Anna says:

Unlike others, Don’t You Forget about Me did not work for me. It actually put me off the author a bit.

The hero does not have amnesia. I waited for the explanation to come through the whole book… it just doesn’t. He’s a gaslighter. It’s particularly bad because the heroine has a lot of issues to deal with, including a gaslighting ex. And yet the hero’s blatant gaslighting is fine or forgivable or something? I don’t know.
