It feels like it’s been ages since I’ve done a get rec’d! But time is always bizarre during this time of year.
For those of you who are new – welcome! For some backstory, I have a lot of book-related jobs outside of SBTB, including reviewing romance novels, moderating book events, and working at an independent bookstore.
Here are some of the titles I’ve been recommending to other readers since the last edition!
Bird Brother

If you’ve loved H is for Hawk or any sort of memoir that intersects with nature, you’ll like this one!

Daughter of the Moon Goddess

I definitely was craving more romance, but found this one to be dreamy with lots of courtly politics.
A captivating debut fantasy inspired by the legend of Chang’e, the Chinese moon goddess, in which a young woman’s quest to free her mother pits her against the most powerful immortal in the realm.
Growing up on the moon, Xingyin is accustomed to solitude, unaware that she is being hidden from the feared Celestial Emperor who exiled her mother for stealing his elixir of immortality. But when Xingyin’s magic flares and her existence is discovered, she is forced to flee her home, leaving her mother behind.
Alone, powerless, and afraid, she makes her way to the Celestial Kingdom, a land of wonder and secrets. Disguising her identity, she seizes an opportunity to learn alongside the emperor’s son, mastering archery and magic, even as passion flames between her and the prince.
To save her mother, Xingyin embarks on a perilous quest, confronting legendary creatures and vicious enemies across the earth and skies. But when treachery looms and forbidden magic threatens the kingdom, she must challenge the ruthless Celestial Emperor for her dream—striking a dangerous bargain in which she is torn between losing all she loves or plunging the realm into chaos.
Daughter of the Moon Goddess begins an enchanting, romantic duology which weaves ancient Chinese mythology into a sweeping adventure of immortals and magic—where love vies with honor, dreams are fraught with betrayal, and hope emerges triumphant.

The Witch’s Heart

I had a customer come in whose partner just devoured Madeline Miller and wanted all the recs with mythology in them. This was part of the pile I gave them. Norse mythology. Lots of women supporting women.
When a banished witch falls in love with the legendary trickster Loki, she risks the wrath of the gods in this moving, subversive debut novel that reimagines Norse mythology.
Angrboda’s story begins where most witches’ tales end: with a burning. A punishment from Odin for refusing to provide him with knowledge of the future, the fire leaves Angrboda injured and powerless, and she flees into the farthest reaches of a remote forest. There she is found by a man who reveals himself to be Loki, and her initial distrust of him transforms into a deep and abiding love.
Their union produces three unusual children, each with a secret destiny, who Angrboda is keen to raise at the edge of the world, safely hidden from Odin’s all-seeing eye. But as Angrboda slowly recovers her prophetic powers, she learns that her blissful life—and possibly all of existence—is in danger.
With help from the fierce huntress Skadi, with whom she shares a growing bond, Angrboda must choose whether she’ll accept the fate that she’s foreseen for her beloved family…or rise to remake their future. From the most ancient of tales this novel forges a story of love, loss, and hope for the modern age.

Yinka, Where is Your Huzband?

This is a gateway book that I’ve been using for customers who like women’s fiction, but aren’t quite ready to commit to a contemporary romance just yet. We’ll win them over slowly, but surely!

Norse mythology, you say? Why, yes thank you, I will.
Also, the fact that I cannot read the name Loki without picturing Tom Hiddleston isn’t going to hurt this one at all.
Falconry is so cool. I once contacted my local falconry club about lessons, but found out there is a very strenuous licensing process to get into it. Which I suppose is as it should be. Mr. Stotts has my respect just for getting in the door!
There’s some cover awe in this selection too!
