  • Island Queen

    Island Queen by Vanessa Riley

Island Queen by Vanessa Riley is $2.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! This is Riley’s first work of historical fiction as opposed to historical romance. It’s about Dorothy Kirwan Thomas, a free Black woman who achieved great wealth. Have you read it?

A remarkable, sweeping historical novel based on the incredible true life story of Dorothy Kirwan Thomas, a free woman of color who rose from slavery to become one of the wealthiest and most powerful landowners in the colonial West Indies.

Born into slavery on the tiny Caribbean island of Montserrat, Doll bought her freedom—and that of her sister and her mother—from her Irish planter father and built a legacy of wealth and power as an entrepreneur, merchant, hotelier, and planter that extended from the marketplaces and sugar plantations of Dominica and Barbados to a glittering luxury hotel in Demerara on the South American continent.

Vanessa Riley’s novel brings Doll to vivid life as she rises above the harsh realities of slavery and colonialism by working the system and leveraging the competing attentions of the men in her life: a restless shipping merchant, Joseph Thomas; a wealthy planter hiding a secret, John Coseveldt Cells; and a roguish naval captain who will later become King William IV of England.

From the bustling port cities of the West Indies to the forbidding drawing rooms of London’s elite, Island Queen is a sweeping epic of an adventurer and a survivor who answered to no one but herself as she rose to power and autonomy against all odds, defying rigid eighteenth-century morality and the oppression of women as well as people of color. It is an unforgettable portrait of a true larger-than-life woman who made her mark on history.

  • My Favorite Half-Night Stand

My Favorite Half-Night Stand by Christina Lauren

My Favorite Half-Night Stand by Christina Lauren is $2.99! This is a stand alone contemporary romance. I’m a huge fan of CLo and have read everything they’ve ever written. We haven’t featured this one on sale before, so get it while you can, especially since their books aren’t discounted often.

By the New York Times bestselling author who “hilariously depicts modern dating” (Us Weekly), My Favorite Half-Night Standis a laugh-out-loud romp through online dating and its many, many fails.

Millie Morris has always been one of the guys. A UC Santa Barbara professor, she’s a female-serial-killer expert who’s quick with a deflection joke and terrible at getting personal. And she, just like her four best guy friends and fellow professors, is perma-single.

So when a routine university function turns into a black tie gala, Mille and her circle make a pact that they’ll join an online dating service to find plus-ones for the event. There’s only one hitch: after making the pact, Millie and one of the guys, Reid Campbell, secretly spend the sexiest half-night of their lives together, but mutually decide the friendship would be better off strictly platonic.

But online dating isn’t for the faint of heart. While the guys are inundated with quality matches and potential dates, Millie’s first profile attempt garners nothing but dick pics and creepers. Enter “Catherine”—Millie’s fictional profile persona, in whose make-believe shoes she can be more vulnerable than she’s ever been in person. Soon “Catherine” and Reid strike up a digital pen-pal-ship…but Millie can’t resist temptation in real life, either. Soon, Millie will have to face her worst fear—intimacy—or risk losing her best friend, forever.

Perfect for fans of Roxanne and She’s the Man, Christina Lauren’s latest romantic comedy is full of mistaken identities, hijinks, and a classic love story with a modern twist. Funny and fresh, you’ll want to swipe right on My Favorite Half-Night Stand.

  • All Stirred Up

All Stirred Up by Brianne Moore

RECOMMENDED: All Stirred Up by Brianne Moore is $1.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal. Catherine, the arbiter of good book thoughts, gave this Austin-inspired contemporary romance a B:

All Stirred Up is not a book that sparkles – the atmosphere is more melancholy, with glimmers of sweetness and humour. It’s a story that requires patience – more patience, honestly, than I have – but if Persuasion is your favourite Jane Austen novel, I suspect you will love All Stirred Up. I don’t think I’ve ever read a retelling that captured the mood of the original so well.

Inspired by Jane Austen’s Persuasion. She returned to save her family’s dying legacy–but found the ghosts of her past alive and well.

Susan Napier’s family once lived on the success of the high-end restaurants founded by her late grandfather. But bad luck and worse management has brought the business to the edge of financial ruin. Now it’s up to Susan to save the last remaining restaurant: Elliot’s, the flagship in Edinburgh.

But what awaits Susan in the charming city of Auld Reekie is more than she bargained for. Chris Baker, her grandfather’s former protégé–and her ex-boyfriend–is also heading to the Scottish capital. After finding fame in New York as a chef and judge of a popular TV cooking competition, Chris is returning to his native Scotland to open his own restaurant. Although the storms have cleared after their intense and rocky breakup, Susan and Chris are re-drawn into each other’s orbit–and their simmering attraction inevitably boils over.

As Chris’s restaurant opens to great acclaim and Susan tries to haul Elliot’s back from the brink, the future brims with new promise. But darkness looms as they find themselves in the crosshairs of a gossip blogger eager for a juicy story–and willing to do anything to get it. Can Susan and Chris reclaim their lost love, or will the tangled past ruin their last hope for happiness?

  • The Perfect Play

The Perfect Play by Jaci Burton

The Perfect Play by Jaci Burton is $2.99! This is her first book in her sports contemporary Play by Play series and I’ve been very vocal about my love for the series in general. I also have a poster of one of her book covers because hot damn! I found this book to be a little slow and the hero is a bit too perfect at times. But for me, this was a decent start to a series that I’ve enjoyed.

From the national bestselling author of Riding the Night comes an erotic story about love and the games people play.

The last thing event planner Tara Lincoln needs is the jet-set lifestyle of a football pro like Mick Riley; even though their steamy and passionate one-night stand proved that Mick is an all-star-both on the field and in the bedroom.

Tara played the game of love once and lost big, and she doesn’t intend to put herself out there again, especially with a certified heartbreaker. But when Mick sets his mind to win, nothing will stop him. And he has the perfect play in mind to catch this sultry vixen.

  1. Rain says:

I think you linked the wrong All Stirred Up, the cover and blurb are for a work of historical nonfiction by the same title.

  2. @Amanda says:

    @Rain: Thank you!

  3. Maya says:

Island Queen should be on cover awe. The cover is so pretty.

  4. Eliza says:

Has (have?) Christina Lauren written any m/m romances other than Autoboyography?

  5. MaryK says:

Brought to Light by Eliot Grayson is free at Amazon.

  6. Georgina says:

As is suggested by the blurb, the heroine in My Favourite Half-Night Stand catfishes the hero for much of the novel. I know this isn’t an issue for everyone, but I deeply dislike it when one MC is lying to the other, so a heads-up for others who feel the same.

  7. Sandra says:

I’m waiting for @DDD’s comments on the Burton cover. I remember when it came out, it was considered the ultimate hot cover.

  8. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Sandra: lol! That is indeed a great cover—Burton actually dedicated the book to its cover designer “for the best cover I ever had”—but, a decade on, it seems odd that the model’s face is not visible. We’re so accustomed now to full faces and direct stares into the camera, we forget that less than ten years ago, a cover image featuring a male model’s upper face and eyes was somewhat uncommon. There’s no doubt that Jaci Burton’s books have some fabulously hot covers. I do not blame Amanda for having a poster of one of them.

  9. TinaNoir says:

Holy man, man. LOL. I remember that Jaci Burton cover when it came out. Now THAT is a cover that results in clicks for romance novels. (I will refrain from going on a rant about the current illustrated covers craze).

  10. Lisa F says:

I enjoyed Island Queen a lot when I read it last year! A lovely book.
