    Accidentally Engaged by Farah Heron

RECOMMENDED: Accidentally Engaged by Farah Heron is $2.99! Kiki reviewed this one and gave it an A-:

I cannot emphasize enough how hungry this book will make you.

Accidentally Engaged might be my top pick for “don’t read while hungry.” Between our heroine Reena’s bread baking (there’s rye, there’s challah, there’s an ongoing battle with a sourdough starter) and her Indian and East African cooking, I was craving a feast pretty much the whole time I was reading this book.

Reena Manji doesn’t love her career, her single status, and most of all, her family inserting themselves into every detail of her life. But when caring for her precious sourdough starters, Reena can drown it all out. At least until her father moves his newest employee across the hall–with hopes that Reena will marry him.

But Nadim’s not like the other Muslim bachelors-du-jour that her parents have dug up. If the Captain America body and the British accent weren’t enough, the man appears to love eating her bread creations as much as she loves making them. She sure as hell would never marry a man who works for her father, but friendship with a neighbor is okay, right? And when Reena’s career takes a nosedive, Nadim happily agrees to fake an engagement so they can enter a couples video cooking contest to win the artisan bread course of her dreams.

As cooking at home together brings them closer, things turn physical, but Reena isn’t worried. She knows Nadim is keeping secrets, but it’s fine— secrets are always on the menu where her family is concerned. And her heart is protected… she’s not marrying the man. But even secrets kept for self preservation have a way of getting out, especially when meddling parents and gossiping families are involved.

  • Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake

Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake by Alexis Hall

RECOMMENDED: Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake by Alexis Hall is $2.99! Carrie and I jointly reviewed this one and agreed on a B+. As a bisexual woman, I definitely felt seen by this book and I’m here for all the 2021 baking romance reads.

Fans of Casey McQuiston, Christina Lauren, and Abby Jimenez will love this scrumptious and sweet romantic comedy from the “dizzyingly talented writer” of Boyfriend Material (Entertainment Weekly)!

Following the recipe is the key to a successful bake. Rosaline Palmer has always lived by those rules—well, except for when she dropped out of college to raise her daughter, Amelie. Now, with a paycheck as useful as greaseproof paper and a house crumbling faster than biscuits in tea, she’s teetering on the edge of financial disaster. But where there’s a whisk there’s a way . . . and Rosaline has just landed a spot on the nation’s most beloved baking show.

Winning the prize money would give her daughter the life she deserves—and Rosaline is determined to stick to the instructions. However, more than collapsing trifles stand between Rosaline and sweet, sweet victory.  Suave, well-educated, and parent-approved Alain Pope knows all the right moves to sweep her off her feet, but it’s shy electrician Harry Dobson who makes Rosaline question her long-held beliefs—about herself, her family, and her desires.

Rosaline fears falling for Harry is a guaranteed recipe for disaster. Yet as the competition—and the ovens—heat up, Rosaline starts to realize the most delicious bakes come from the heart.

  • Star Champion

    Star Champion by Susan Grant

Star Champion by Susan Grant is FREE! This was originally published under the name The Champion of Baresh and is a sci-fi romance. We ran a guest review of this one during our RITA Reader Challenge and they gave it a B+.

Only one prize matters: his champion’s heart

Dreaming big on a dead-end world… Jemm Aves toils for a mining company by day, but at night she is a successful bajha player, disguised as a male to compete in the violent underworld of the colony’s fight clubs. Every win puts her one small step closer to her goal: saving enough to escape Barésh with her family. When a royal recruits her to be a star player for his team, her ruse proves to be her most perilous game yet when it puts both their lives—and her heart—at risk.

Prince Charming he was not… Prince Klark is eager to reverse his reputation as the black sheep of the Vedla clan. If his bajha team can win the galactic title it would go a long way toward restoring the family honor that his misdeeds tarnished. On Barésh, he tracks down an amateur who has risen to the top of the seedy world of street bajha, offering the commoner a chance of a lifetime: a way off that reeking space rock for good. But his new player comes with a scandalous secret that turns his plans and his beliefs upside down. He sets out to win a very different prize—his champion’s reluctant heart.

  • Game Changer

    Game Changer by Rachel Reid

Game Changer by Rachel Reid $1.99! This is the first book in a series of the same name and is a M/M hockey romance. I know other books in the series have been recommended on the site. Are you a fan? Do you have a favorite?

New York Admirals captain Scott Hunter takes his pregame rituals very seriously. In this case, it’s not just a lucky smoothie he’s craving—it’s the man who made it.

Pro hockey star Scott Hunter knows a good thing when he sees it. So, when a smoothie made by juice bar barista Kip Grady precedes Scott breaking his on-ice slump, he’s desperate to recreate the magic…and to get to know the sexy, funny guy behind the counter.

Kip knew there was more to Scott’s frequent visits than blended fruit, but he never let himself imagine being invited back to Scott’s penthouse. Or kissed with reckless abandon, never mind touched everywhere all at once. When it happens it’s red-hot, incredible and frequent, but also only on Scott’s terms and always behind his closed apartment doors.

Scott needs Kip in his life, but with playoff season approaching, the spotlight on him is suddenly brighter than ever. He can’t afford to do anything that might derail his career…like introducing the world to his boyfriend. Kip is ready to go all-in with Scott—but how much longer will he have to remain a secret?

  1. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I love Rachel Reid’s Game Changers series, but GAME CHANGER, the first book, is honestly its weakest entry. I’m glad I read the far superior HEATED RIVALRY first or I might have missed a really good series. GAME CHANGER—adapted from Reid’s Captain America/Bucky Barnes fan-fic, if that makes a difference—is less a romance and more one man’s journey to coming out. If you’re a series completist or like to read series books in order, definitely read GAME CHANGER: it’s not a terrible book, but HEATED RIVALRY (the next book in the series) is so much better.

  2. Allison R-B says:

DiscoDollyDeb is 100% on the nose. Start with Heated Rivals. Then go back to Game Changer to prove to yourself that Ilya Rozanov’s snark is true: Scott Hunter is boring. I did like Kip’s dad, though.

  3. LisaM says:

I think the 4th book, Common Goal, is the weakest. I was glad I waited for a library copy of that one. I have a soft spot for Scott and Kip myself.

  4. Eliza says:

And I’m an outlier who actually thinks Game Changer is pretty good. Your mileage, as they say, may vary.

  5. Msb says:

No desire to read Star Champion, but it it’s nice finally to see a man busting out of his armor.

  6. Carrie G says:

My advice to those wanting to read the Game Changer series is to go ahead and start here, with Game Changer, and know that the series overall is very strong. I gave Game Changer and Common Goal B-‘s, Tough Guy a B, and Heated Rivalry and Role Model A’s. I think that’s a pretty solid set of grades for the series.

The Long Game is one of my most anticipated books of 2022 (along with C.S. Poe’s sequel to The Madison Square Murders, my #1 pick for 2021.)
