I liked ‘Damaged Goods’ a lot.
No magic in Second Sight or the Arcane Series. Just paranormal abilities…
The Arcane world has kind of overtaken/enveloped all of her books since-for example there was a contemporary duology (Copper Beach/Dream Eyes) awhile back that featured paranormal protagonists but not marketed as part of the series, but then they ended up finding out about Arcane Society. Harmony, a nominally futuristic world, doesn’t seem like it was originally conceived as connected to Arcane (I think it preceded Second Sight?) but all of the later books are now a continuation of that world/timeline/whatever you want to call it.
I have a fondness for JAK/AQ as she was the very first romance I ever read, and there was a time I grabbed everything I could of hers… but I’m a bit burnt out on the repetition/sameness of her sort of mix and match characters and story elements.
I haven’t read all of Burning Cove Series, just the first couple books… anyone know if they eventually connect to Arcane, since the contemporary Arcane HQ is in Burning Cove??
My Best Friend’s Mardi Gras Wedding by Erin Nichols is free
There is a free title by Layla Hagen today as well as one by Deborah Hale and a book by Pippa Grant today
I loved the entire Hibbert Ravenswood series. “Damaged Goods” kind of falls between the first and second books and it kind of rounds out the stories in the other three. I advise you to get all of them – they cover small-town lives (and loves) for the non-neurotypical; there’s a big mis in the third (last) book, but it’s resolved well.
A Distant Heart sounds bonkers! I was reading the blurb thinking it was a very sweet, borderline quaint sounding story.
“A Million Dreams” played in my brain’s soundtrack. I was close to clicking the buy button.
And then this sentence “And when his investigation into a black market organ ring run by a sociopathic gang lord…” Ummm, not what I was expecting at all! Maybe the story actually works, but the blurb sounds like it was written by two people who couldn’t be bothered to talk to each other.
Penny – all of JAK/ AQ/Jayne Castle books are connected to Arcane. All her worlds are converging with the Jones last name repeated with descendants of the original Jones in this book.
I too find her books repetitive but I have found them comfort reads. Also her heroines are smart, sensible and her heroes are men who appreciate strong women. It has been wonderful to go to her backlist these past two years.
I was browsing around today and found a paranormal women’s fiction omnibus on $0.99 sale – Aged to Perfection, first credited author Mandy M. Roth. Originally I thought it was a short story anthology, but it looks to be 19 novellas and novels. I recognize a couple of the authors’ names, and I think I’ve seen commenters here express curiosity about the sub-sub-genre, so it might be worth a leap.
I second @Penny’s comment. Second Sight was actually the first Quick book I read. It may even have been the first romance I read after a hiatus of many (decades) years. I don’t know how it would hold up for me now, but back then I really liked it to the point it sent me in such a deep dive into the JAK pool to the point where I think I managed to read the entirety of her backlist under all her pseudonyms in a relatively short period. Maybe that rapid immersion contributed to my tiring of the predictability and sameness of her books (particularly with the Harmony series). I haven’t read one in years now, but still occasionally snag one on sale on the off chance I’ll stick my toe back in the JAK pool.
