  • The Warlord’s Wife

The Warlord’s Wife by Sandra Lake

RECOMMENDED: The Warlord’s Wife by Sandra Lake is $1.99! Elyse gave this one an A-:

If you don’t mind a hero in serious need of redemption or some over-the-top villains and you dig medieval historicals, this book is right up your alley. It’s like The Wolf and the Dove minus all the rape and enslavement.

A stunning historical romance from debut author Sandra Lake transports readers to 12th century Sweden, where a powerful Viking lord will discover a fierce heart cannot be taken by mere force.

Lida was married to the love of her life for just two months when she became a widow. Pregnant and disowned by her late husband’s family for suspected infidelity, she was forced to return to her family in shame. Eight years later, uninterested in the prospect of finding another husband, she finds herself the unwilling object of a marriage contract with a powerful warlord. In a day, she is wed, bed, and put on a ship headed for Tronscar; an unknown icy stone and steel fortress.

Jarl Magnus is pleased to have taken a strong wife who, however stubborn she may be, will surely produce sons. However, he is less pleased with his wife’s additional baggage—a young daughter. But despite himself, Magnus falls for the daughter just as hard as the mother, and Lida’s heart is warmed to see the cold, serious Jarl move surprisingly fast into the role of stepfather.

When enemies attack Tronscar, Jarl Magnus’s nerves of steel waver, as the warrior fears his love for Lida will weaken him. But when his family is threatened, he’ll go to war to protect them, discovering along the way that they have the strength to protect themselves.

  • The Orchid Throne

The Orchid Throne by Jeffe Kennedy

The Orchid Throne by Jeffe Kennedy is $2.99! This fantasy romance is the first book in the new Forgotten Empires series. I always get excited about fantasy romances I haven’t read yet, but Kennedy’s books are usually hit or miss for me. Have you read this one?

Welcome to the world of Forgotten Empires from award winning author Jeffe Kennedy that begins with The Orchid Throne.

    A PRISONER OF FATE
As Queen of the island kingdom of Calanthe, Euthalia will do anything to keep her people free—and her secrets safe—from the mad tyrant who rules the mainland. Guided by a magic ring of her father’s, Lia plays the political game with the cronies the emperor sends to her island. In her heart, she knows that it’s up to her to save herself from her fate as the emperor’s bride. But in her dreams, she sees a man, one with the power to build a better world—a man whose spirit is as strong, and whose passion is as fierce as her own…

    A PRINCE AMONG MEN
Conrí, former Crown Prince of Oriel, has built an army to overthrow the emperor. But he needs the fabled Abiding Ring to succeed. The ring that Euthalia holds so dear to her heart. When the two banished rulers meet face to face, neither can deny the flames of rebellion that flicker in their eyes—nor the fires of desire that draw them together. But in this broken world of shattered kingdoms, can they ever really trust each other? Can their fiery alliance defeat the shadows of evil that threaten to engulf their hearts and souls?

  • Dead Until Dark

Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris

Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris is 99c! This is book 1 in the Sookie Stackhouse series, which went on to become True Blood on HBO. I remember reading this book and being sucked in (no pun intended) (oh, who am I kidding, pun TOTALLY intended) immediately. If you’ve been curious, this is a great opportunity. Also, I was definitely team Eric Northman.

Sookie Stackhouse is a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. She’s quiet, keeps to herself, and doesn’t get out much. Not because she’s not pretty. She is. It’s just that, well, Sookie has this sort of “disability.” She can read minds. And that doesn’t make her too dateable. And then along comes Bill. He’s tall, dark, handsome–and Sookie can’t hear a word he’s thinking. He’s exactly the type of guy she’s been waiting for all her life….

But Bill has a disability of his own: He’s a vampire with a bad reputation. He hangs with a seriously creepy crowd, all suspected of–big surprise–murder. And when one of Sookie’s coworkers is killed, she fears she’s next….

  1. Joy says:

Charlaine Harris is a good writer and her heroine tend to be smart and interesting. The beginning books in her Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood series are really good even if you’re not a particular paranormal fan. Pick this first one up and give it a try.

  2. Vasha says:

Quite a hairstyle on that first cover. I hadn’t realized they’d invented conditioner and blow-drying in the 12th century.

  3. Mzcue says:

Strong second to Joy’s endorsement of Charlaine Harris’s True Blood series. I enjoyed the secondary characters as well as the leads. Also—there’s a lot of housekeeping competency porn in the books. Sookie manages deftly to tidy, reorganize, and and polish her home so energetically that I felt my own housework had been completed each with each reading by proxy.

  4. Dee says:

@Vasha I was convinced there was a timetraveling aspect we were not informed of and she has an infinite supply of Aussie 3 minute miracle for curls.

  5. I really loved the first Sookie books. Sadly, I lost interest as the series went on and it felt like every male creature was in love with her, but those first books were fantastic.

I too, was team Eric, but he did one of the most romantic gestures ever when he regraded her driveway.

What?! You say, how is that romantic? It is because he gained nothing from it, and he didn’t expect to get anything for it. He realized she had a need he could easily fix and did it.

As someone who regularly drives on back roads–many of which are gravel–that is an AMAZING gift to give to someone.

  6. HeatherS says:

I also was a fan of the Sookie Stackhouse series. The last book? Meh. But I appreciated that the heroine wasn’t going back and forth between the same two (or more) guys, unlike a lot of other series. It’s a highly entertaining series and easy to get into if you’re not feeling especially focused. I definitely preferred it to the True Blood tv show, which I thought suffered greatly from the lack of seeing things through Sookie’s perspective/thoughts (on top of being a gratuitously bloody and nudity-filled mess with little clear plot). Sure, I only watched like one episode and part of the second, but I’d read the books first and thought they were (mostly) much better.

  8. Ken Houghton says:

Which is good, because Soup of the Day appears to have been a one-day only deal. Back to $11.99.

  9. Ken Houghton says:

That said, the Indian InstaPot Cookbook that is also referenced in that Gift Guide is on Kindle sale for $1.49.

  10. Katharina says:

Now I crave a book about soup vampires …
