The Flatshare
RECOMMEND: The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary is $2.99! We had a great guest review of this one and Lisa the Librarian gave it an A-:
It was romantic, sweet, hot, funny, and original – everything I’m looking for in a romance. I can definitely see myself rereading this in the not-too-distant future.
Tiffy and Leon share an apartment. Tiffy and Leon have never met.
After a bad breakup, Tiffy Moore needs a place to live. Fast. And cheap. But the apartments in her budget have her wondering if astonishingly colored mold on the walls counts as art.
Desperation makes her open minded, so she answers an ad for a flatshare. Leon, a night shift worker, will take the apartment during the day, and Tiffy can have it nights and weekends. He’ll only ever be there when she’s at the office. In fact, they’ll never even have to meet.
Tiffy and Leon start writing each other notes – first about what day is garbage day, and politely establishing what leftovers are up for grabs, and the evergreen question of whether the toilet seat should stay up or down. Even though they are opposites, they soon become friends. And then maybe more.
But falling in love with your roommate is probably a terrible idea…especially if you’ve never met.
What if your roommate is your soul mate? A joyful, quirky romantic comedy, Beth O’Leary’s The Flatshare is a feel-good novel about finding love in the most unexpected of ways.

Mexican Gothic
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is $2.99! I think Moreno-Garcia is an extremely talented writer and this one blends historical settings and horror. Have you read it? We also recommended it in our Horror Romance Rec League.
From the author of Gods of Jade and Shadow comes a reimagining of the classic gothic suspense novel, a story about an isolated mansion in 1950s Mexico — and the brave socialite drawn to its treacherous secrets.
He is trying to poison me. You must come for me, Noemí. You have to save me.
After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She’s not sure what she will find — her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region.
Noemí is also an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she’s also tough, smart, and has an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: Not of her cousin’s new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemí; and not even of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemi’s dreams with visions of blood and doom.
Her only ally in this inhospitable abode is the family’s youngest son. Shy and gentle, he seems to want to help Noemí, but might also be hiding dark knowledge of his family’s past. For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. The family’s once colossal wealth and faded mining empire kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper she unearths stories of violence and madness.
And Noemí, mesmerized by the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place, may soon find it impossible to ever leave this enigmatic house behind.

Bringing Down the Duke
RECOMMENDED: Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore is $1.99! This is the first book in Dunmore’s debut series. However, the second title wasn’t as favorably reviewed. Carrie read this one and gave it a B+:
This story excels in terms of entertaining characters, and I’d love to see a spin-off story about almost every single one of them.
A stunning debut for author Evie Dunmore and her Oxford Rebels, in which a fiercely independent vicar’s daughter takes on a duke in a fiery love story that threatens to upend the British social order.
England, 1879. Annabelle Archer, the brilliant but destitute daughter of a country vicar, has earned herself a place among the first cohort of female students at the renowned University of Oxford. In return for her scholarship, she must support the rising women’s suffrage movement. Her charge: recruit men of influence to champion their cause. Her target: Sebastian Devereux, the cold and calculating Duke of Montgomery who steers Britain’s politics at the Queen’s command. Her challenge: not to give in to the powerful attraction she can’t deny for the man who opposes everything she stands for.
Sebastian is appalled to find a suffragist squad has infiltrated his ducal home, but the real threat is his impossible feelings for green-eyed beauty Annabelle. He is looking for a wife of equal standing to secure the legacy he has worked so hard to rebuild, not an outspoken commoner who could never be his duchess. But he wouldn’t be the greatest strategist of the Kingdom if he couldn’t claim this alluring bluestocking without the promise of a ring…or could he?
Locked in a battle with rising passion and a will matching her own, Annabelle will learn just what it takes to topple a duke…

Kingdom of the Wicked
RECOMMENDED: Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco is $3.99! I’ve mentioned this YA fantasy romance a couple times on the site. Once in Hide Your Wallet and another in Get Rec’d. I definitely think it’ll appeal to fans of Sarah J. Maas and Jennifer L. Armentrout.
Kerri Maniscalco introduces her next series, a dark tale of a beautiful young witch, a troubled demon, and their epic romance, set against a 19th century Italian backdrop.
Emilia and her twin sister Victoria are streghe – witches who live secretly among humans, avoiding notice and persecution. One night, Victoria misses dinner service at the family’s renowned Sicilian restaurant. Emilia soon finds the body of her beloved twin…desecrated beyond belief. Devastated, Emilia sets out to discover who did this, and to seek vengeance at any cost—even if it means using dark magic that’s been long forbidden.
Then Emilia meets Wrath, the outlier among the seven demon brethren, always choosing duty over pleasure. He’s been tasked by his master with investigating a series of women’s murders on the island. When Emilia and Wrath’s fates collide, it’s clear this disturbing mystery will take a bewitching turn…

I am not usually a contemporary fan, but I loved The Flatshare. (Also, my sister who works in publishing remarked bitterly that it’s entirely realistic that Tiffy can’t afford a bed to herself.)
I also loved The Flatshare. 🙂
The Flat Share was one of my favorite books from 2021. I recommend it to friends regularly. I read a few other O’Leary’s last year as well because I enjoyed The Flat Share so much. But I thought that they fell far short of this one.
Mexican Gothic is fabulously creepy. It was a A+ read for me and I’m working my way through the rest of her books.
I agree she’s a wonderful writer who seems to be having fun with genre and style which I love. There’s a place for great writers who do the same thing over again… you really know what you’re getting and can take comfort in it. I admire writers who play with genre, because even if some books are more successful than others it’s great to see what a talented writer can do with it.
Sarah, new posts are no longer showing up in my Bloglovin’ feed. The last update was from Thursday. Not sure what changed but wanted to make sure you’re aware!
Mexican Gothic was a DNF for me. The ending was obvious to me from, pretty much, the get go, I I got tired of slogging thru descriptions of her clothing, and the pacing was glacial. I know a lot of people loved it but I just couldn’t stick it out.
Sailor Proof by Annabeth Albert is on sale for $1.99. Tropey, fluffy fake dating mm romance (with only one bed at a family reunion, plus best friend’s brother). I enjoyed it and gave it a B. It’s the first in a new series and the 2nd one is coming out next month. It is a military romance but is low on military action – most of the book takes place during one of the MC’s shore leave.
Annabeth Albert writes reliable, tropey, low angst mm romance and this is a good example of her style. She definitely writes in the mm romance genre, as opposed to queer romance (which can also have mm pairings but is written more intentionally for a queer audience than mm is – at least imo).
@Leigh – yup something is weird and we are working on it. I’m sorry!
Yay I loved Flatshare!
I liked Flatshare and Mexican Gothic. Bringing Down the Duke had some good elements but did not work for me in the end.
