Queens, a Mystery, & More

  • Diablo Lake: Moonstruck

Diablo Lake: Moonstruck by Lauren Dane

RECOMMENDED: Diablo Lake: Moonstruck by Lauren Dane is $1.99! Sarah reviewed this one and thought it was a great start to the series. Here are some of her thoughts:

This paranormal small Southern town of shifters and witches and rival pack tensions between the Dooleys and Pembrys is immersively fun, sexy, and thoughtful. Bonus points: witches AND vivid, loving female friendships.

In Diablo Lake, Tennessee, a town populated by werewolves, witches, and more, magic woven deep into the earth protects the town’s secrets from outsiders.

Katie Grady left Diablo Lake to get over a humiliating breakup; but her family needs her help, so she’s back, in a sublet right across the hall from the guy she’s lusted after for years. Jace Dooley is hotter than ever, and their friendship picks up along with massive doses of grown-up chemistry.

The very scent of Katie sharpens Jace’s canines, makes the wolf within him stir. There’s nothing more alluring to a Pack Alpha than a sexy female who is so very in charge. She won’t be coddled, but if he plays his hand just right she might be convinced to become his.

Katie presents a challenge to Jace’s wolf nature, whose chief instinct is to protect. Especially now that she’s coming into the magic that is her birthright – and suddenly Jace isn’t the only one who’s interested in Katie, or the raw power she’s just learning to use.

  • Dumplin’

    Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy

RECOMMENDED: Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy is $1.99! I highly recommend this book, especially if you love Dolly Parton. It’s funny and emotional, and the struggles Willowdean faces as a “self-proclaimed fat girl” will relate to many who suffered from those awkward teen years. Seriously, get this book. And the Netflix adaptation is fantastic, if you need something to watch right now.

Self-proclaimed fat girl Willowdean Dickson (dubbed “Dumplin’” by her former beauty queen mom) has always been at home in her own skin. Her thoughts on having the ultimate bikini body? Put a bikini on your body. With her all-American beauty best friend, Ellen, by her side, things have always worked . . . until Will takes a job at Harpy’s, the local fast-food joint. There she meets Private School Bo, a hot former jock. Will isn’t surprised to find herself attracted to Bo. But she is surprised when he seems to like her back.

Instead of finding new heights of self-assurance in her relationship with Bo, Will starts to doubt herself. So she sets out to take back her confidence by doing the most horrifying thing she can imagine: entering the Miss Clover City beauty pageant—along with several other unlikely candidates—to show the world that she deserves to be up there as much as any twiggy girl does. Along the way, she’ll shock the hell out of Clover City—and maybe herself most of all.

With starry Texas nights, red candy suckers, Dolly Parton songs, and a wildly unforgettable heroine— Dumplin’ is guaranteed to steal your heart.

  • A is for Alibi

A is for Alibi by Sue Grafton

A is for Alibi by Sue Grafton is $2.99! These mysteries are huge favorites for some, but others found the books have to too much filler. None of the other books are on sale, but if you’ve been curious about the series, this isn’t a bad price.

When Laurence Fife was murdered, few mourned his passing. A prominent divorce attorney with a reputation for single-minded ruthlessness on behalf of his clients, Fife was also rumored to be a dedicated philanderer. Plenty of people in the picturesque southern California town of Santa Teresa had a reason to want him dead. Including, thought the cops, his young and beautiful wife, Nikki. With motive, access, and opportunity, Nikki was their number-one suspect. The jury thought so, too.

Eight years later and out on parole, Niki Fife hires Kinsey Millhone to find out who really killed her late husband.

A trail that is eight years cold. A trail that reaches out to enfold a bitter, wealthy, and foul-mouthed old woman and a young boy, born deaf, whose memory cannot be trusted. A trail that leads to a lawyer defensively loyal to a dead partner–and disarmingly attractive to Millhone; to an ex-wife, brave, lucid, lovely–and still angry over Fife’s betrayal of her; to a not-so-young secretary with too high a salary for too few skills–and too many debts left owing: The trail twists to include them all, with Millhone following every turn until it finally twists back on itself and she finds herself face-to-face with a killer cunning enough to get away with murder.

  • God Save the Queen

God Save the Queen by Kate Locke

God Save the Queen by Kate Locke is $1.99! This is an alternate history, steampunk novel with a romantic element. The whole trilogy is on sale! Scrolling through Goodreads reviews, it seems people either really enjoyed it or were meh. I’m curious!

Queen Victoria rules with an immortal fist.

The undead matriarch of a Britain where the Aristocracy is made up of werewolves and vampires, where goblins live underground and mothers know better than to let their children out after dark. A world where being nobility means being infected with the Plague (side-effects include undeath), Hysteria is the popular affliction of the day, and leeches are considered a delicacy. And a world where technology lives side by side with magic. The year is 2012.

Xandra Vardan is a member of the elite Royal Guard, and it is her duty to protect the Aristocracy. But when her sister goes missing, Xandra will set out on a path that undermines everything she believed in and uncover a conspiracy that threatens to topple the empire. And she is the key-the prize in a very dangerous struggle.

I remember Dumplin’ being a delight, though it’s been awhile since I read it.

  2. Penny says:

AN UNSUITABLE HEIR by KJ Charles is 4.99 on kobo & kindle. Not the largest discount, but for some reason this particular series almost never goes on sale…. This is my favorite in the Sins of the Cities series and features a gender fluid/nonbinary MC. It’s the 3rd book, and you really do have to read the first 2 to follow what is going on as they overlap.

  3. Susanna says:

GIRL WAITS WITH GUN is on sale for kindle at Amazon for $2.99. It’s a fun historical mystery based on the real-life adventures of one of the first female deputy sheriffs in US history (it’s set in 1914 New Jersey).

  4. Midge says:

I watched the film Dumplin on a plane on my last business trip before COVID… I thought it was cute. Didn’t realise it was Netflix – might give it a rewatch.

  5. Kareni says:

    Dumplin’ was an enjoyable read.

A is for Alibi was published in hardback in 1982 and in paperback in 1984 which is when I read it. My, how the years and decades fly by!

  6. MaryK says:

Chasing Lucky by Jenn Bennett is 1.99 at Amazon.

  7. Susan says:

Gosh, I started reading Grafton’s series way back at the beginning and even went to a book signing for one of them (G, I think). I donated all my physical books to the library book sale, but the ebooks do occasionally go on sale. Sadly, Grafton passed away after Y was published so we’ll never have a final Z to wrap things up.

  8. Darlynne says:

@Susan: I worked at a mystery book store and we hosted Grafton when G IS FOR GUMSHOE came out. She was funny and kind, wish we could have had her more often, but we were just a small independent. Were you at Scotland Yard Books in Winnetka by any chance for that signing? 😉

  9. MsCellanie says:

The Dumplin’ movie was nice. Not the best movie ever, but far from the worst movie I saw in 2021. Solid plot.

I started reading the Graftons when they were only on D or E – I stopped around J? K? when some bad editing took me clean out of the book and I realized I wasn’t enjoying it anymore.

I do remember that they were really fat-shamy.

  10. Susan says:

Hi, @Darlynne. Scotland Yard Books sounds amazing, but the Grafton book signing I attended was at a Crown Books in the DC area. I think G is for Gumshoe may have been her first hardcover release, hence the book tour. And I agree that Ms. Grafton was elegant and lovely in every sense. (I still remember what she was wearing.)

Crown was a small chain but they hosted a lot of events and I was able to briefly meet some interesting authors (Dick Francis, Gloria Vanderbilt, among others) back in the day. You must have had countless such meetings!
