Sure Shot

Sure Shot by Sarina Bowen is 99c! This is book four in the Brooklyn series, which I believe is a spin-off of the Brooklyn Bruisers series. Both, however, involve hockey and hockey players.
A new stand-alone hockey romance from USA Today bestseller Sarina Bowen.
On the eve of her thirtieth birthday, sports agent Bess Beringer is ready to make some changes. Armed with a five-year plan—indexed and color coded—she’ll tackle her personal life with the same zeal that she brings to her successful agency.
A big, tall, ripped hunk of hockey player who’s just been traded to the Brooklyn Bruisers is not a part of that plan. Mark “Tank” Tankiewicz has a lot of baggage. He’s a ride-or-die loner with a bad reputation. He’s on the rebound. He’s also the sexiest thing on two legs, and for some crazy reason it’s Bess that he wants.
She knows better. But then she falls stupid in love with him anyway. And for a while it seems like maybe he’ll do the same.
Until she asks him for the one thing he can never give her…

Playing with Fire by R.J. Blain is 99c! This is described as a “magical romantic comedy” and yes, that appears to be a unicorn on the cover. And I believe that unicorn is also a shifter of sorts. Some readers found this to be more on the bizarre side, which…fair point. While others found themselves laughing out loud.
Warning: This novel contains excessive humor, action, excitement, adventure, magic, romance, and bodies. Proceed with caution.
What do you get when you mix gorgons, an incubus, and the Calamity Queen? Trouble, and lots of it.
Working as the only human barista at a coffee shop catering to the magical is a tough gig on a good day. Bailey Gardener has few options. She can either keep spiking drinks with pixie dust to keep the locals happy, or spend the rest of her life cleaning up the world’s nastiest magical substances.
Unfortunately for her, Faery Fortunes is located in the heart of Manhattan Island, not far from where Police Chief Samuel Quinn works. If she’d been smart, she never would have agreed to help the man find his wife.
Bailey found her, all right—in the absolutely worst way possible.
One divorce and several years later, Bailey is once again entangled in Chief Quinn’s personal affairs, and he has good reason to hate her. Without her, he wouldn’t be Manhattan’s Most Wanted Bachelor, something he loathes. Without her, he’d still be married.
If only she’d said no when he asked her help, she might have had a chance with him. While her magic worked well, it came with a price: misfortune. Hers.
When Quinn’s former brother-in-law comes to her for help, he leaves her with a cell phone and seventy-five thousand reasons to put her magic to the test. However, when she discovers Quinn’s ex-wife is angling for revenge, Bailey’s tossed in the deep end along with her sexiest enemy.

My Fair Princess by Vanessa Kelly is $1.99! This book was mentioned in a previous Hide Your Wallet and is book one in a series. It’s a My Fair Lady retelling, which I know will appeal to some. Readers loved the enemies to lovers romance so much and many described it as a slow burn. However, some readers had some issues with the heroine’s characterization.
First, Vanessa Kelly brought readers The Renegade Royals. Now, in a delightfully witty new series, she introduces The Improper Princesses—three young women descended from royalty, each bound for her own thrilling adventure . . .
Despite being the illegitimate daughter of a prince, Gillian Dryden is happily ignorant of all social graces. After growing up wild in Italy, Gillian has been ordered home to England to find a suitable husband. And Charles Valentine Penley, the excessively proper, distractingly handsome Duke of Leverton, has agreed to help transform her from a willful tomboy to a blushing debutante.
Powerful and sophisticated, Charles can make or break reputations with a well-placed word. But his new protégée, with her habit of hunting bandits and punching earls, is a walking scandal. The ton is aghast . . . but Charles is thoroughly intrigued. Tasked with taking the hoyden in hand, he longs to take her in his arms instead. Can such an outrageous attraction possibly lead to a fairytale ending?

The Windham Brides Boxed Set by Grace Burrowes is $2.99! This set collects the first three books in this historical romance series. I want to say at least one of these has been reviewed, but I can’t remember. Have you read any of these?
The first three books in this New York Times bestselling Regency romance series are now in a special collection perfect for binging and hailed as “terrific” by Bridgerton author Julia Quinn.
THE TROUBLE WITH DUKES:
They call him the Duke of Murder. The gossips whisper that the new Duke of Murdoch is a brute, a murderer, and even worse–a Scot. They say he should never be trusted alone with a woman. But Megan Windham sees in Hamish something different, someone different.TOO SCOT TO HANDLE
As a captain in the army, Colin MacHugh led men, fixed what was broken, and fought hard. Now that he’s a titled gentleman, he’s still fighting — this time to keep his bachelorhood safe from all the marriage-minded debutantes. Then he meets the intriguing Miss Anwen Windham. Anwen is amazed at how quickly Lord Colin takes in hand a pack of rambunctious orphan boys. Amazed at the thrill she gets from the rumble of his Scottish burr and the heat of his touch. But she doesn’t know Colin has enemies who will stop at nothing to ruin him and anybody he holds dear.NO OTHER DUKE WILL DO
Julian St. David, Duke of Haverford, has a long-term plan to restore the family finances, but his sister has a much faster solution: host a house party for London’s single young ladies and find Julian a wealthy bride. Elizabeth Windham has no interest in marriage, but a recent scandal has forced her hand. As the two spend more time together, their attraction is overwhelming, unexpected… and absolutely impossible. With meddling siblings, the threat of financial ruin, and gossips lurking behind every potted palm, will they find true love or true disaster?Add to Goodreads To-Read List →

Bowen’s hockey books are auto-buy for me so, of course, I one-clicked.But all I could think when I looked at that cover was “Photoshop.”
Playing With Fire is filled with crazy sauce, and yes, that’s a fire breathing unicorn shifter LOL. Her magical romantic comedy books have got the same zany feel as Shelly Laurenston’s do.
Playing with fire is so much. Like, the author took every fantasy idea they had and shoved it into a book and then added pyrotechnics and somehow even that doesn’t capture the total batshit vibes of the book. Although Laurenston’s books have a similar vibe (and I just can’t with her books), for some reason Playing With Fire totally worked for me.
You guys, the book that follows Playing with fire in the series has a…wait for it..LLAMA on the cover!!!

@Margarita, thanks for that. My day is made.
Bwahahahaha!!
@Margaria: I picked up the bundle (The Magical Romantic Comedy (with a body count) Starter Pack) a while back. Currently $9.99 @ BN for 7 short novels/novellas. Mostly with different characters. Among others, there’s an otter, a badger, a snake princess, and a mongoose. If it’s a mythological creature or fabulous beast, it’s probably in there. Lots of fun crazy sauce.
Agree Playing with Fire is crazysauce, but sometimes you just want to get lost in the silly. It is a wackydoodle story but funny and entertaining. There was almost too much stuff in one book, perhaps should have been several. His family tree so complicated it was overwhelming, but still enjoyed the crazy story. My Final Rating was B+

For library users, I found a whole bunch of R.J. Blain’s books on Hoopla. Both audio and ebook formats. I downloaded Playing With Fire to listen to at work.
I like the occasional hockey romance but I find descriptions of hockey games very boring. Is that weird? I see the sexy potential of the sport I just don’t want to watch it I guess?
I loved “Playing with Fire” and re-read it and some of the other books often. It is very silly HOWEVER the first book has the CDC, some hospital settings, and a fast spreading virus. I completely forgot those parts when I first recommended it mid-2020 (they didn’t stick out the first time I read it) so just be aware.
