  • Vessel of Starfire

Vessel of Starfire by Allsion Carr Waechter

Vessel of Starfire by Allison Carr Waechter is $2.99! Thanks to everyone who let us know about this sale after featuring it on Cover Awe. This one is more of a YA or NA title and, while there is a queer romance in the book, I believe the cover subjects are sisters. Do correct me in the comments below if you’ve read it!

On a planet that sits at the crossroads between realms, two sisters stand between their people and an apocalyptic prophecy that forecasts the end of all worlds.

Echo and Miyala Rodrigal have lived an adventurous life of crime in the fifteen years since the elite criminal family, the Vindicata, rescued them from a home for wayward children. Once close, lately, the adoptive sisters struggle to connect. Miyala has grown into the crew’s top strategist, content to scheme and plan, seemingly secure in her place within the family. By contrast, Echo feels she needs to earn her place in the crew. She’s carefully built her identity around being the deadliest assassin on the continent, l’Echo Morbida, the echo of death.

When the Warlord forces the Vindicata, to betray their oath to only commit crimes of justice, Echo must reconnect with her sister quickly to find a way save their family. But the Vindicata have been keeping secrets Echo can scarcely imagine. Amidst the threat of intercontinental war, meddling gods who won’t say exactly what they want, and a cult of true believers determined to strike “unnaturalness” from the continent forever, now those secrets are oozing out and Echo can’t keep running from the facts about herself she’d rather not face.

    ***

Vessel of Starfire is a YA fantasy adventure with a diverse cast of characters, a queer love triangle, and a hefty dose of familial drama. Appropriate for mature YA readers and adults.

  • Duke the Halls

    Duke the Halls by

Duke the Halls is $2.99 at Amazon! This anthology is $4.99 elsewhere. This collection has six holiday historical romances from some recognizable names. I believe each story is around 100 or so pages according to the page count on Goodreads.

From six beloved writers—Jennifer Ashley, Anna Bradley, Grace Burrowes, Kerrigan Byrne, Christi Caldwell and Tanya Anne Crosby—come six Christmas stories that will warm up your holiday, and put a twinkle in your eyes.

A First-Footer for Lady Jane by Jennifer Ashley
When Grandfather MacDonald predicts Lady Jane will marry this year’s First-Footer–the first guest into the house on Hogmanay—she dismisses the notion. Her childhood sweetheart is fighting on the Peninsula, and she can’t imagine marrying anyone but the staid Major Barnett. But when the clock strikes midnight, and Hogmanay begins, a knock at the front door changes Jane’s life forever.

Then in a Twinkling by Anna Bradley
An escapade, a caper, an outrageous Christmas courtship…Oliver Angel will do whatever it takes to win the heart of his chosen lady. The first time he met Dinah Bishop she turned her pistol on him, but instead of his head, Dinah’s ball struck the softest part of his heart. Oliver is determined to make Dinah his own, but there’s one small problem… Dinah Bishop doesn’t believe in love.

    Making Merry by Kerrigan Byrne
Sprightly Victorian spinster, Vanessa Latimer, is stranded for the holidays in the Scottish Highlands by a relentless winter blizzard. She takes refuge at a centuries-old inn where the only available room is haunted by the ghost of a warrior who fell at Culloden Moor. One who refuses to give up his side of the bed.

The Art of Kissing Beneath the Mistletoe by Tanya Anne Crosby
Alexandra Grace Huntington once believed in fairy tales. She oohed and ahed over gowns from Courtauld’s, never wore black lest in mourning, always minded her social graces, and never, ever indulged her inner bluestocking. Now her world has come crashing down and she’s alone for the holidays—no siblings, no parents, no friends, and not one shred of pride remaining. When she’s unexpectedly invited to celebrate one last holiday with her dearest friend, she can’t accept quickly enough… only how did one comport oneself after one’s father has attempted to ruin the one man she’s loved all her life?

A Marquess for Christmas by Christi Caldwell
Lady Patrina Tidemore gave up on the ridiculous notion of true love after having her heart shattered and her trust destroyed by a black-hearted cad. Used as a pawn in a game of revenge against her brother, Patrina returns to London from a failed elopement with a tattered reputation. The last thing she’s interested in is falling in love. But it is Christmas, and after a chance encounter with a vexing, but entrancing widower in Hyde Park, Patrina begins to think anything is possible.

The Marquess of Mistletoe by Grace Burrowes
He left her standing in the cold… She sent him off to war.
Leo Drake was all set to share his future with the lady of his dreams, when he was told Marielle had changed her mind. Bewildered and heartbroken, he joined the army and sailed for Spain. It’s ten years later, and fate has thrown Leo and Marielle together on Christmas night. Will they say farewell for all time, or let the magic of the holidays rejoin their hearts?

This is a limited-time, special box set. All these novellas were previously published, but never together in a box set. Enjoy!

  • The Complete Highland Magic Collection

The Complete Highland Magic Collection by Kerrigan Byrne

The Complete Highland Magic Collection by Kerrigan Byrne is 99c at Amazon! This one has nine stories from the Highland Magic series, but I also think these stories are on the shorter side.

Included are nine stories of men who battle the beast within, and the women who are strong enough to tame them…

Highland Secret: He’s death for hire, cursed by a malicious enemy who left him unable to speak. She’s a refugee with a dangerous secret that could cost her life. Outnumbered by thousands, he’s fated to die in battle like so many Berserkers before him. Could the strength of their love defy destiny?

Highland Shadow: He’s a mercenary Laird who fears nothing but the darkness inside him. She’s a noble beauty from two of the most prominent families in Scotland, sold to the highest bidder. He mistakenly rescues her from a fate worse than death, but now she’s his captive.

Highland Stranger: He’s a nameless bastard, stalking the Highlands bent on revenge and murder when he stumbles on an infant deserted in the snow. She’s a desperate woman who’s lost everything, including her dignity.

Highland Darkness: Her last memory is of her violent death, and now she’s screaming for vengeance. He’s a Laird with enough sins to stain his soul, but he’s cursed for the crimes of another. With a clan divided, an impending marriage, and whispers of dark magic threatening the Highlands, a tempting Banshee is the last thing he needs in his chambers.

Highland Devil:  She was brutalized and burned alive, but denied her vengeance by a cruel twist of fate. He’s a ruthless and brilliant Druid driven mad by his quest for retribution. Two Souls have lost themselves in the tormented secrets of the past and can only find redemption in the dangerous desires they thought long dead.

Highland Destiny: She’s a Banshee assassin who’s not yet killed a man, and her first mark had a carnal proposition too seductive to resist. He’s the notorious Laird of Shadows, a rogue Berserker terrorizing the Highlands in search of a warrior’s death.

Highland Warlord: A dark evil threatens Morgana de Moray’s Highland home.  The Druid Princess is left with no choice but to strike a deadly bargain with the dangerous Berserker and risk all to unleash the beast from within the man.

Highland Witch:  Charged with keeping a Druid relic safe, Kenna de Moray is cloistered in a convent far from home.  When a Viking Berserker saves her from the lash of a whip, he doesn’t realize that he’s about to unleash the full force of her passionate fire on the world, or that he’s drawn her enemies to them.

Highland Warrior: Malcolm de Moray is the Druid King of the Picts, and Earth’s last hope to stop the Apocalypse. The woman he saves has spent a century as a prisoner of dark Druids, and now she must choose between her heart or her life as they battle for the future of us all.

  • An Unseen Attraction

An Unseen Attraction by K.J. Charles

An Unseen Attraction by K.J. Charles is $2.99! This is a relatively new release, coming out this February. It’s a M/M historical romance and was recommended several times in a Rec League on neurodivergent characters. This is also the first book in a new series by Charles and has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.

A slow-burning romance and a chilling mystery bind two singular men in the suspenseful first book of a new Victorian series from K. J. Charles.

Lodging-house keeper Clem Talleyfer prefers a quiet life. He’s happy with his hobbies, his work—and especially with his lodger Rowley Green, who becomes a friend over their long fireside evenings together. If only neat, precise, irresistible Mr. Green were interested in more than friendship…

Rowley just wants to be left alone—at least until he meets Clem, with his odd, charming ways and his glorious eyes. Two quiet men, lodging in the same house, coming to an understanding… it could be perfect. Then the brutally murdered corpse of another lodger is dumped on their doorstep and their peaceful life is shattered.

Now Clem and Rowley find themselves caught up in a mystery, threatened on all sides by violent men, with a deadly London fog closing in on them. If they’re to see their way through, the pair must learn to share their secrets—and their hearts.

  1. chacha1 says:

‘An Unseen Attraction’ was not the first KJ Charles I read but I’ve come back to it (and its sequels) multiple times. The ‘sins of the city’ trilogy contains one of the best-plotted intrigues I’ve ever read. Each book has a central relationship during which the 3-book story arc is developed; each book’s central relationship deals with different aspects of identity (the last book is entirely about identity in all its senses); each book requires from its MCs different kinds of trust, as they face different challenges relating to same-sex intimate connections in Victorian times. Anyone who appreciates Golden Age mystery or ‘pulp’ adventures should give these books a try.

  2. Carrie G says:

I agree with chacha1, An Unseen Attraction is an excellent start to an excellent series, and includes some of Charles’s most interesting characters, including a non-binary MC in a later book and the neurodivergent character in this one. And it’s all done with KJ Charles superb plotting and writing. It’s difficult for me to pick out a favorite book or series by this author, but I really enjoyed this entire series. It’s great on audio, too.

  3. cleo says:

I agree that Unseen Attraction is an excellent book – definitely my favorite in the series, although the whole trilogy is good.

It’s not new, though – the trilogy has been out for awhile.

I will also caution readers that it’s pretty bloody and violent, in the style of old pulp adventures. K.J. Charles’ book usually have a body count and the dead bodies in this series are particularly gruesome.

Also – one of the protags is a taxidermist and his art is described extensively.

  4. LML says:

I love this site! I read chacha1’s comment and think: Buy. I read CarrieG’s comment and think: Buy NOW. I read cleo’s comment and: screech brakes.

  5. batgirl says:

I know authors can’t be held responsible for the blurbs, but was anyone else confused by the blurb for The Art of Kissing Beneath the Mistletoe?
Alexandra once believed in fairy tales (so do most children, is it relevant?)
oohed and ahhed over gowns at Courtaulds (so did many young ladies, is it relevant?)
never wore black lest in mourning (assuming that ‘lest’ is a misprint for ‘unless’, this was generally true for women through the Regency, Victorian, and Edwardian eras. Unless it’s important that she was not a Goth before her time, this is not relevant)
always minded her social graces (see above – that’s what ladies did, so how is it relevant?)
never, ever indulged her inner bluestocking (the only mildly unusual aspect of her character and it’s both invisible and irrelevant.)
We are told so many things about Alexandra and none of them seem to matter, either to her character or to the plot.
Crosby needs a better blurb-writer. The situation described in the last sentence has potential but I almost didn’t get there.

  6. Jess says:

Does anyone know if ‘Making Merry’ by Kerrigan Byrnes in the Duke the Halls collection is available solo from anywhere?

  7. Gill says:

Has the KJ Charles blurb been cut and pasted. It came out in 2017. 5 years ago!

  8. Glen says:

@Jess – I read Making Merry as a stand-alone on KU. KU lists it as part of the Goode Girls series, although I’m not clear on how it connects to the other 4 books; maybe it connects to her forthcoming book??? Unlike the other books in the Goode Girls and Victorian Rebels series, this definitely has supernatural and magical elements.
