  • The Highland Fling

The Highland Fling by Meghan Quinn

The Highland Fling by Meghan Quinn is $1.99 at Amazon! This is a contemporary romance with a grumpy Scottish hero. I’ve always been curious about Quinn’s contemporary romances. Would you recommend them?

In this steamy tale by USA Today bestselling author Meghan Quinn, an American searching for her purpose escapes to a Scottish town but finds more questions than answers when she meets a brooding yet handsome handyman.

Freshly fired from her third job in a row, Bonnie St. James has lost her way. So when she and her best friend stumble upon a “help wanted” post to run a coffee shop in the Scottish Highlands, they apply on a whim. Who knows? Maybe traveling to a new place is just what she needs to figure out her next move.

When the friends arrive in the tiny idyllic town of Corsekelly, they instantly fall for the gorgeous Highland landscape and friendly townspeople. But Bonnie finds a less-than-warm welcome in Rowan MacGregor, the rugged local handyman. Busy wrestling his own demons, Rowan’s in no mood to deal with the quirky American—even if she is a bonny lass.

As Bonnie and Rowan’s paths inevitably cross, insults—and sparks—fly. Can the pair build on their similarities to help each other find purpose and direction…and maybe romance too? Or will their passionate tempers fling them apart?

  • Migrations

    Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy

RECOMMENDED: Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy is $2.99! I’ve mentioned this one a couple times in a Hide Your Wallet and Get Rec’d post. This is climate fiction (fiction where a climate crisis is central to the story) and it’s just a bittersweet, character-driven book.

For readers of Station Eleven and Flight Behavior, a debut novel set on the brink of catastrophe, as a young woman chases the world’s last birds – and her own final chance for redemption.

A dark past. An impossible journey. The will to survive.

Franny Stone has always been a wanderer. By following the ocean’s tides and the birds that soar above, she can forget the losses that have haunted her life. But when the wild she so loves begins to disappear, Franny can no longer wander without a destination. She arrives in remote Greenland with one purpose: to find the world’s last flock of Arctic terns and follow them on their final migration. She convinces Ennis Malone, captain of the Saghani, to take her onboard, winning over his salty, eccentric crew with promises that the birds she is tracking will lead them to fish.

As the Saghani fights its way south, Franny’s new shipmates begin to realize that the beguiling scientist in their midst is not who she seems. Battered by night terrors, accumulating a pile of letters to her husband, and dead set on following the terns at any cost, Franny is full of dark secrets. When the story of her past begins to unspool, Ennis and his crew must ask themselves what Franny is really running toward—and running from.

Propelled by a narrator as fierce and fragile as the terns she is following, Migrations is a shatteringly beautiful ode to the wild places and creatures now threatened. But at its heart, it is about the lengths we will go, to the very edges of the world, for the people we love.

  • The Simple Wild

The Simple Wild by K.A. Tucker

The Simple Wild by K.A. Tucker is $1.99! I feel like Tucker is one of those authors that I’ve heard a lot of or has a large fan base, yet I know nothing about it. The covers give me young, white Christian Instagram vibes, if you know what I mean.

City girl Calla Fletcher attempts to reconnect with her estranged father, and unwittingly finds herself torn between her desire to return to the bustle of Toronto and a budding relationship with a rugged Alaskan pilot in this masterful new romance from acclaimed author K.A. Tucker.

Calla Fletcher was two when her mother took her and fled the Alaskan wild, unable to handle the isolation of the extreme, rural lifestyle, leaving behind Calla’s father, Wren Fletcher, in the process. Calla never looked back, and at twenty-six, a busy life in Toronto is all she knows. But when her father reaches out to inform her that his days are numbered, Calla knows that it’s time to make the long trip back to the remote frontier town where she was born.

She braves the roaming wildlife, the odd daylight hours, the exorbitant prices, and even the occasional—dear God—outhouse, all for the chance to connect with her father: a man who, despite his many faults, she can’t help but care for. While she struggles to adjust to this new subarctic environment, Jonah—the quiet, brooding, and proud Alaskan pilot who keeps her father’s charter plane company operational—can’t imagine calling anywhere else home. And he’s clearly waiting with one hand on the throttle to fly this city girl back to where she belongs, convinced that she’s too pampered to handle the wild.

Jonah is probably right, but Calla is determined to prove him wrong. As time passes, she unexpectedly finds herself forming a bond with the burly pilot. As his undercurrent of disapproval dwindles, it’s replaced by friendship—or perhaps something deeper? But Calla is not in Alaska to stay and Jonah will never leave. It would be foolish of her to kindle a romance, to take the same path her parents tried—and failed at—years ago.

It’s a simple truth that turns out to be not so simple after all.

  • The Ladies of the Secret Circus

The Ladies of the Secret Circus by Constance Sayers

The Ladies of the Secret Circus by Constance Sayers is $2.99! This is a stand alone novel that seems to have two different timelines: 1920s Paris and early 2000s Virginia. There are also some magical elements.

Paris, 1925: To enter the Secret Circus is to enter a world of wonder-a world where women tame magnificent beasts, carousels take you back in time, and trapeze artists float across the sky. But each daring feat has a cost. Bound to her family’s strange and magical circus, it’s the only world Cecile Cabot knows-until she meets a charismatic young painter and embarks on a passionate love affair that could cost her everything.

Virginia, 2005: Lara Barnes is on top of the world-until her fiancé disappears on their wedding day. Desperate, her search for answers unexpectedly leads to her great-grandmother’s journals and sweeps her into the story of a dark circus and a generational curse that has been claiming payment from the women in her family for generations.

I loved The Ladies of the Secret Circus. It had me at circus tbh

  2. Rhiannon Kaye says:

I’d been waiting for the Simple wild/ Tucker to go on sale.

I’ve also been wondering about Quinn’s books, but haven’t read any yet beyond samples. My library has her co-wrote ones on e-audio.

  3. Emily C says:

“ The covers give me young, white Christian Instagram vibes, if you know what I mean.”
@Amanda- I laughed out loud at that because I knew exactly what you meant! It’s the hat I think, very Christian Girl Autumn.

  4. Neile says:

I am a huge fan of K.A. Tucker’s books. She’s a pre-order author for me. I first fell for both her Ten Tiny Breaths and Burying Water series. They’re emotional, angsty, suspenseful, full of heart, and have fascinating heroines and heroes. I would say they’re richer/deeper than the quick romance default. She’s an A author for me.

So, too, with the Simple Wild series. There isn’t much diversity in the main characters, but the Simple Wild series are set in remote Alaska. I haven’t checked with my indigenous friends from that area because they’re not romance readers but from my semi-aware white girl perspective I think they deal well with the secondary characters who are indigenous. I really loved The Simple Wild. I enjoyed the two sequels that dealt with the same characters (though The Simple Wild is a standalone) and wouldn’t have missed them, but they’re not as great as the first one.

I pre-ordered the new one, which deals with related characters.

I agree the covers may suggest Christian instagram, but they’re not at all–I believe they’re point is to evoke the wonder sparked in the characters for the challenging/beautiful/dangerous world they face in remote Alaska.

The Highland Fling was my first Meghan Quinn. I honestly wasn’t expecting much and read it because it was on sale then, too, and I have a weakness for stories set in Scotland. I expected a bog standard light romance, and while it is a lighter romance I was pleasantly surprised with the depth of story and character, and it sparked an interest in Meghan Quinn and I now have several of her books on my TBR pile. The Highland Fling was a B+ for me.

  5. Lisa F says:

“Ladies of the Secret Circus” is my pick here; I liked the Quinn, and the Tucker landed at a C for me.

  6. Lostshadows says:

Barnes and Noble has a 25% off preorders coupon, through the 28th, which is usable on physical and ebooks.
