  • A Princess for Christmas

A Princess for Christmas by Jenny Holiday

A Princess for Christmas by Jenny Holiday is $1.99! Carrie read this and gave it a B:

Overall, I really enjoyed this story. I found it to be feminist and sexy, loving and funny. It was the book I had no idea I needed and it comforted me right down to my toes. I absolutely recommend this as a holiday de-stressor and I am hoping that there is a more inclusive sequel for some of the supporting characters.

From USA Today bestselling author Jenny Holiday comes a modern fairy tale just in time for Christmas about a tough New Yorker from the other side of the tracks who falls for a princess from the other side of the world.

Leo Ricci’s already handling all he can, between taking care of his little sister Gabby, driving a cab, and being the super of his apartment building in the Bronx. But when Gabby spots a “princess” in a gown outside of the UN trying to hail a cab, she begs her brother to stop and help. Before he knows it, he’s got a real-life damsel in distress in the backseat of his car.

Princess Marie of Eldovia shouldn’t be hailing a cab, or even be out and about. But after her mother’s death, her father has plunged into a devastating depression and the fate of her small Alpine country has fallen on Marie’s shoulders. She’s taken aback by the gruff but devastatingly handsome driver who shows her more kindness than she’s seen in a long time.

When Marie asks Leo to be her driver for the rest of her trip, he agrees, thinking he’ll squire a rich miss around for a while and make more money than he has in months. He doesn’t expect to like and start longing for the unpredictable Marie. And when he and Gabby end up in Eldovia for Christmas, he discovers the princess who is all wrong for him is also the woman who is his perfect match.

  • The Happy Ever After Playlist

The Happy Ever After Playlist by Abby Jimenez

The Happy Ever After Playlist by Abby Jimenez is $2.99! I know there are mixed feelings about the first book, but the second book is seems to have more positive reviews. Also, if you want my first book opinion: I felt like it should have been positioned more as a chronic pain narrative than infertility, since I never thought the latter was an issue for the main character.

From the USA Today bestselling author of The Friend Zone comes an adorable and fresh romantic comedy about one trouble-making dog who brings together two perfect strangers.

Two years after losing her fiancé, Sloan Monroe still can’t seem to get her life back on track. But one trouble-making pup with a “take me home” look in his eyes is about to change everything. With her new pet by her side, Sloan finally starts to feel more like herself. Then, after weeks of unanswered texts, Tucker’s owner reaches out. He’s a musician on tour in Australia. And bottom line: He wants Tucker back.

Well, Sloan’s not about to give up her dog without a fight. But what if this Jason guy really loves Tucker? As their flirty texts turn into long calls, Sloan can’t deny a connection. Jason is hot and nice and funny. There’s no telling what could happen when they meet in person. The question is: With his music career on the rise, how long will Jason really stick around? And is it possible for Sloan to survive another heartbreak?

  • The Bone Shard Daughter

The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart

The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Steward is $2.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! This fantasy novel was mentioned on a previous Hide Your Wallet, though I’ve heard it can be a little bit of a dark read. I think both Elyse and Carrie read it and have shared mostly favorable thoughts.

In an empire controlled by bone shard magic, Lin, the former heir to the emperor will fight to reclaim her magic and her place on the throne. The Bone Shard Daughter marks the debut of a major new voice in epic fantasy.

The emperor’s reign has lasted for decades, his mastery of bone shard magic powering the animal-like constructs that maintain law and order. But now his rule is failing, and revolution is sweeping across the Empire’s many islands.

Lin is the emperor’s daughter and spends her days trapped in a palace of locked doors and dark secrets. When her father refuses to recognise her as heir to the throne, she vows to prove her worth by mastering the forbidden art of bone shard magic.

Yet such power carries a great cost, and when the revolution reaches the gates of the palace, Lin must decide how far she is willing to go to claim her birthright – and save her people.

If “queer librarian spies on horseback trying to do the right thing” is relevant to your interests, Sarah Gailey’s UPRIGHT WOMEN WANTED is Tor.com’s book club pick, free through the 17th.

I’m toying with the New Year’s Resolution for next year of “no buying new books.” I know that sounds like a nightmare for some people, but I belong to 3 library system and have a huge TBR pile. Not to mention all the wee free libraries in my neighborhood.

But it’s not new year’s yet and Princess for Christmas is definitely my impulse buy of the day. Duke, Actually was a delightful surprise and I’m excited to circle back to this world.

  3. HeatherS says:

@ Ren Benton/Lena Brassard: I loved the premise of Upright Women Wanted, but there simply wasn’t enough book. I know it’s a novella, but I was expecting more explanation of the world building – why are things the way they are?; instead it seemed like a continuation of an existing series where you’re already expected to know everything about the world this book is in and not need the backfill. If Gailey does a full book that delves deeper and gives me all those details that the novella was missing, I’d be happy to read it.

  4. JoannaM says:

Thank you for sharing about ACOTR! I was just thinking I wanted to re-read it during the holidays and now I won’t have to be on hold for the library ebooks!

  5. FashionablyEvil says:

I really liked the first three books in ACOTR, but man, that novella (A COURT OF FROST AND STARLIGHT) is dreadful. It’s like all the worst parts of Maas’s writing: pointless angst and drama, no plot, and no hint of character evolution. It’s basically a really bad Christmas episode that should never have been made.
