The Beautiful Ones

RECOMMENDED: The Beautiful Ones by Silvia Moreno Garcia is $2.99! Carrie reviewed this one and gave it a B+:
The Beautiful Ones is a book that includes many genres, including fantasy, romance, manners, and just a little bit of Gothic. I enjoyed it more as a soap opera than a romance, but your mileage will vary depending on your interpretation of the characters.
In a world of etiquette and polite masks, no one is who they seem to be.
Antonina Beaulieu is in the glittering city of Loisail for her first Grand Season, where she will attend balls and mingle among high society. Under the tutelage of the beautiful but cold Valérie Beaulieu, she hopes to find a suitable husband. However, the haphazard manifestations of Nina’s telekinetic powers make her the subject of malicious gossip.
Yet dazzling telekinetic performer and outsider Hector Auvray sees Nina’s powers as a gift, and he teaches her how to hone and control them. As they spend more and more time together, Nina falls in love and believes she’s found the great romance that she’s always dreamed of, but Hector’s courtship of Nina is deceptive.
The Beautiful Ones is a sweeping fantasy of manners set in a world inspired by the Belle Époque.

How the Scot Was Won by Caroline Linden is 99c! This is a novella in the Desperately Seeking Duke series and came out in July. Based on the descriptions, there are class differences and the off-limits sibling of a friend trope.
Agnes St. James has no wealth, no status, and no suitors. Thankfully, she’s happy with her family, her friends, and her beloved shop, the place to buy fine silks in Edinburgh.
Felix Duncan has a thriving legal career, connections, and ambition. What he doesn’t have, despite his father’s prodding, is a wife. Fortunately, he’s content with that.
Until their paths cross, and suddenly both realize they want more. Agnes is astonished—and thrilled—that such a charming, handsome fellow is flirting with her. Felix is astonished—and bowled over—that his friend’s younger sister has grown into such a clever beauty. It looks like Fate—until a scandalous indiscretion and a shocking inheritance threaten to spoil any chance of happily-ever-after…

Witch Please by Ann Aguirre is $1.99! This paranormal romance was featured in our witchy round up for this year. I think a few of our reviewers were curious about this one, but found the conflict aspect to be weak and would have been easily solved by setting boundaries. Have you read it?
Practical Magic meets Gilmore Girls in this adorable witchy rom-com with:
• A bisexual virgin baker with a curse
• A witch looking to avoid romantic entanglements
• And a chemistry between them that causes literal sparksDanica Waterhouse is a fully modern witch—daughter, granddaughter, cousin, and co-owner of the Fix-It Witches, a magical tech repair shop. After a messy breakup that included way too much family “feedback,” Danica made a pact with her cousin: they’ll keep their hearts protected and have fun, without involving any of the overly opinionated Waterhouse matriarchs. Danica is more than a little exhausted navigating a long-standing family feud where Gram thinks the only good mundane is a dead one and Danica’s mother weaves floral crowns for anyone who crosses her path.
Three blocks down from the Fix-It Witches, Titus Winnaker, owner of Sugar Daddy’s bakery, has family trouble of his own. After a tragic loss, all he’s got left is his sister, the bakery, and a lifetime of terrible luck in love. Sure, business is sweet, but he can’t seem to shake the romantic curse that’s left him past thirty and still a virgin. He’s decided he’s doomed to be forever alone.
Until he meets Danica Waterhouse. The sparks are instant, their attraction irresistible. For him, she’s the one. To her, he’s a firebomb thrown in the middle of a family war. Can a modern witch find love with an old-fashioned mundane who refuses to settle for anything less than forever?

The Guinevere Deception by Kiersten White is $1.99! I talked about this in a previous Hide Your Wallet and it’s really gorgeous in person. I bought it from my local indie, but of course, it’s sitting in a stack somewhere. Did you read this one?
From New York Times bestselling author Kiersten White comes a new fantasy series reimagining the Arthurian legend, set in the magical world of Camelot.
There was nothing in the world as magical and terrifying as a girl.
Princess Guinevere has come to Camelot to wed a stranger: the charismatic King Arthur. With magic clawing at the kingdom’s borders, the great wizard Merlin conjured a solution–send in Guinevere to be Arthur’s wife . . . and his protector from those who want to see the young king’s idyllic city fail. The catch? Guinevere’s real name–and her true identity–is a secret. She is a changeling, a girl who has given up everything to protect Camelot.
To keep Arthur safe, Guinevere must navigate a court in which the old–including Arthur’s own family–demand things continue as they have been, and the new–those drawn by the dream of Camelot–fight for a better way to live. And always, in the green hearts of forests and the black depths of lakes, magic lies in wait to reclaim the land. Arthur’s knights believe they are strong enough to face any threat, but Guinevere knows it will take more than swords to keep Camelot free.
Deadly jousts, duplicitous knights, and forbidden romances are nothing compared to the greatest threat of all: the girl with the long black hair, riding on horseback through the dark woods toward Arthur. Because when your whole existence is a lie, how can you trust even yourself?

I took Witch, Please off of my TBR list after reading Alexis Hall’s GR review – https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/4233239217?book_show_action=false&from_review_page=1
I’m posting the link just FYI – it seems like this book works for a lot of readers but the bi rep thing and the weird curse thing make me think it won’t work for me and life is too short to read books I’m just meh on.
I think I made some comment on Witch, Please in a WAYR but that Alexis Hall review is close enough to my thoughts to say I agree.
I found my comment. I called it light and fluffy almost to a fault. I think what I meant is that stuff that would normally give you pause is blithely ignored by the book and its characters. Grandma hates non-magical people and is semi-estranged from her daughter for marrying one? (And the husband/father never shows up on page! Which was weird) Oh that sucks. Danica and her cousin have a weird codependent relationship that includes a pact to not get into serious relationships? Huh, that should probably be addressed. Characters perform magic on unsuspecting people? Yikes.
I am curious to see if the sequel is better whenever it’s out but I’ll wait for it to go on sale.
Role Model by Rachel Reid (her newest Game Changer book–just came out in August) is $2.99 on Kindle. I loved this one, and I know others have mentioned how much they enjoy the series too.
The Guinevere Deception is very good and so is the second book in the series.
@spinster.revival:
1) LOVE your username
2) Role Model is my favorite of this series (after Heated Rivalry, of course).
New readers: If you haven’t read the series yet, I recommend grabbing this while it’s on sale because Carina has been upping the price on each new release lately.
I also strongly suggest you make sure you read in series order, because the characters are all super-intertwined and it makes way more sense to read about the other couples as the series progresses if you’ve read from the start.
Guinevere Deception is one of my favorite books. I loved the second one too and I have the 3rd on pre-order.
Ann Aguirre has worked for me exactly once. Strange Love is one of my favorite books, but I didn’t care for Love Code or her Beauty and the Beast retelling. If one of her books looks interesting, I either hit the library or check Kindle Unlimited.

@WhitD and @KatiM: Thanks for the feedback on “The Guinevere Deception.” I’m intrigued by the description, I love the cover, and I’m happy to learn there are several books in the series I look forward to reading!
This bit from Alexis Hall’s review (linked above) pretty well encapsulates why a lot of paranormal stuff leaves me cold:
“The thing is, though, the whole idea of a soulmate isn’t remotely accessible to me. There’s one person in the world you are inherently MEANT to be with and everybody else is just chopped liver until you find that one person? Even if they’re in New Zealand? COME ON. It’s the most depressing idea, like, ever. It undermines the value of every relationship except the last one you happen to be in and reduces the beautiful, meaningful emotional work of CHOOSING to be with someone to an abstract sizzle that has, when you get right down to it, nothing to do with either of you.”
The Beautiful Ones is worth checking out !
