  • The Smoke Thief

The Smoke Thief by Shana Abe

The Smoke Thief by Shana Abe is $3.99! This is the first book in Abe’s Drakon historical paranormal romance series. I really enjoyed this book and the world Abe created with dragons. The hero is definitely an Alpha hero and can be a jackass at times, which some readers found off-putting. But I went on to read the rest of the Drakon series.

For centuries they’ve lived in secret among northern England’s green and misted hills. Creatures of extraordinary beauty, power, and sensuality, they possess the ability to shape-shift from human to dragon and back again. Now their secret–and their survival–is threatened by a temptation that will break every boundary….

Dubbed the Smoke Thief, a daring jewel thief is confounding the London police. His wealthy victims claim the master burglar can walk through walls and vanish into thin air. But Christoff, the charismatic Marquess of Langford, knows the truth: the thief is no ordinary human but a “runner” who’s fled Darkfrith without permission. As Alpha leader of the drakon, it’s Kit’s duty to capture the fugitive before the secrets of the tribe are revealed to mortals. But not even Kit suspects that the Smoke Thief could be a woman.

Clarissa Rue Hawthorne knew her dangerous exploits would attract the attention of the drakon. But she didn’t expect Christoff himself to come to London, dangling the tribe’s most valuable jewel–the Langford Diamond–as bait. For as long as she could remember, Rue had lived the life of a halfling–half drakon, half mortal–and an outcast in both worlds. She’d always loved the handsome and willful Kit from the only place it was safe: from afar. But now she was no longer the shy, timid girl she’d once been. She was the first woman capable of making the Turn in four generations. So why did she still feel the same dizzying sense of vulnerability whenever he was near?

From the moment he saw her, Kit knew that the alluring and powerful beauty was every bit his Alpha equal and destined to be his bride. And by the harsh laws of the drakon, Rue knew that she was the property of the marquess. But they will risk banishment and worse for a chance at something greater. For now Rue is his prisoner, the diamond has disappeared, and she’s made the kind of dangerous proposition a man like Kit cannot resist….

In this bewitching novel, Shana Abé transports us into a world of exhilarating romance and magic.

  • Cinnamon and Gunpowder

Cinnamon and Gunpowder by Eli Brown

RECOMMENDED: Cinnamon & Gunpowder by Eli Brown is $2.99! Carrie reviewed this one and gave it an A:

I never would have believed that this book could have such an emotional impact on me, but honestly I loved it on every single level. The language is so evocative. I recommend this book wholeheartedly – just don’t expect everything to be entirely happy at the end.

A gripping adventure, a seaborne romance, and a twist on the tale of Scheherazade—with the best food ever served aboard a pirate’s ship

The year is 1819, and the renowned chef Owen Wedgwood has been kidnapped by the ruthless pirate Mad Hannah Mabbot. He will be spared, she tells him, as long as he puts exquisite food in front of her every Sunday without fail.

To appease the red-haired captain, Wedgwood gets cracking with the meager supplies on board. His first triumph at sea is actual bread, made from a sourdough starter that he leavens in a tin under his shirt throughout a roaring battle, as men are cutlassed all around him. Soon he’s making tea-smoked eel and brewing pineapple-banana cider.

But Mabbot—who exerts a curious draw on the chef—is under siege. Hunted by a deadly privateer and plagued by a saboteur hidden on her ship, she pushes her crew past exhaustion in her search for the notorious Brass Fox. As Wedgwood begins to sense a method to Mabbot’s madness, he must rely on the bizarre crewmembers he once feared: Mr. Apples, the fearsome giant who loves to knit; Feng and Bai, martial arts masters sworn to defend their captain; and Joshua, the deaf cabin boy who becomes the son Wedgwood never had.

Cinnamon and Gunpowder is a swashbuckling epicure’s adventure simmered over a surprisingly touching love story—with a dash of the strangest, most delightful cookbook never written. Eli Brown has crafted a uniquely entertaining novel full of adventure: the Scheherazade story turned on its head, at sea, with food.

  • Under the Lights

Under the Lights by Shannon Stacey

Under the Lights by Shannon Stacey is 99c! This is book one in the Boys of Fall contemporary romance series. This, like most Stacey books, is a small town romance but with a sportsy theme.

They were the golden boys of fall: Stewart Mills High School’s legendary championship winning football team. Fourteen years later, they’re back to relive their glory, save the team—and find themselves again…

Chase Sanders’s life has taken a lot of crazy turns lately. But returning to his hometown to help his old coach keep his high school football team afloat might be the craziest thing to happen to him yet. That is, until he starts falling for the last person he should—Coach’s gorgeous daughter…

Kelly McDonnell learned the hard way that cocky, charming men are nothing but trouble, so she knows Chase is bad news. Still, she can’t resist his smile—or the rest of him. But when his loyalty to her father conflicts with their growing attraction, any hope for a relationship might be blocked before it can even begin…

I don’t enjoy electronic cookbooks, but for $1.99 I strongly recommend Rose Levy Beranbaum’s Pie and Pastry Bible as a reference book. I own a hard copy and while I’ve made a [very] few recipes, its value to me is immense because it goes beyond instructions into explanations of the how and why of ingredients and processes.

  2. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Just grabbed the PIE AND PASTRY BIBLE (I’ll be sharing with my daughter who loves to cook and with whom I share a kindle account). The editor is Maria Guarnaschelli, late mother of Food Network fixture, Alex Guarnaschelli. And you have to read Beranbaum’s introduction where she writes about the first time she tried to bake a pie using an oven her mother had only ever used to store pans and (unbeknownst to Beranbaum) her grandmother used to store soap. Beranbaum removed the pans, but not the soap. Lol

  9. DonnaMarie says:

The Pie And Pastry Bible has the best chocolate pie recipe, but beware there’s an error in the instructions. I adore pretty much everything Rose Levy Berenbaum has published. She’s the foundation of my cook book collection.

  10. Elena says:

I read The Smoke Thief a lifetime ago, and I really loved it. I haven’t read it since then so I don’t know if it aged well, but I remember loving the whole series.

  11. SusanE says:

    @DonnaMarie
Oh no! What is the error? Based on your comment, I need to make the chocolate pie ASAP.

  12. LML says:

@SusanE, Rose Levy Beranbaum’s website Real Baking with Rose has a page with errors and corrections. I suspect errors are corrected in later editions.

I miss Shana Abe so much – I wish she was still writing, but I haven’t seen anything by her come out in a long time.
