Happy First Night of Hanukkah!
Yes, Hanukkah is preposterously early this year – only a few days away from being a “Thanksgivakkuh.” But that doesn’t mean we can’t nosh leftovers and latkes, and celebrate!
Every year we do a giveaway for each night of Hanukkah, and I wouldn’t dream of skipping this year. We’ve got lovely things to give away, and I love celebrating with you.

My nephew brought me light and joy as well as my new anti anxiety/depression medication
My newly adopted fur-baby Coal has been a constant source of lightness in my everyday life recently. I’m so glad I have him in my life now!
My 4 month old great-nephew has brought me joy.
My mom got a clean bill of health from her neurologist after some concerning symptoms.
My kids…always them.
It’s been a challenging year due to an unexpected health issue (I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer), but my family, friends, colleagues, and students have brought me light during this dark time by being very supportive during my diagnosis, multiple hospital stays, and surgery.
I adopted two guinea pigs from a rescue. One is blind, but she just lights up the whole room. She’s such a sweetheart.
Celebrating channukah with my grandchildren, who are 4, 2 and 9 monthhs. We couldn’t celebrate Rosh Hashanah with them due to COVID restrictions here in Melbourne Australia.
My little niece is K-pop fan and we watch videos together on Zoom.
My three dogs! There is no better cure for sadness than puppy hugs.
This website! I always know I can soothe whatever brain chaos I’ve got going on my logging on.
Oh it so kind of you to always do this, Sarah! Yay for the giveway!
Light in my year: therapy. PRAISE THE LORD for therapy.
Fan-fic, the GBBO and other cozy television.
My soon to be four-year-old son (who’s turning into a really cool little dude) and my colleagues are what have really brought me light throughout the year.
My friends have brought joy as we have cautiously gotten together again outside of Zoom.
My mother’s lymphoma went into remission.
My greyhounds bring so much light to my life – brought home this year by one of them being diagnosed with cancer. He’s still here, still doing well and doing the ‘greyhound lean’ at every opportunity. He’s brought light to many lives and it will be hard to say goodbye. It’s so worth loving them though.
It’s been a rough year, but I am so grateful that I can always escape into books and book work for a little while. Thanks for all the giveaways!
The vaccine and the ability to spend more time with family
Knowing that my husband and I, along with all three of our daughters, are fully-vaccinated and (wearing masks and using common sense) we’re able to venture out again. Bless all those work worked tirelessly to develop, distribute, and administer the vaccine—often fighting against the most benighted ignorance we’ve encountered since the invention of the microscope.
Another fur baby! My dog brings me moments of delight every day. Excepr the days he eats poop. Those days are not as fun.
Rereading my favorite urban fantasy series like Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews and Lois McMaster Bujold’s Penric series
Books this year have been my light, my escape from the stresses and troubles of a long year that keeps throwing curveballs. Thankful for this website as well!
I was able to begin therapy sessions this year and it has helped my health incredibly. So, so grateful for it and how it’s changed my life.
Books, videos of cute cats and opossums, my work wife, and my BFF have all helped me get through this stressful year. I’m not sure what I’d do with out them all.
I was one of those people who bought both an Instant Pot and a puppy. The Instant Pot is covered in little Grogus and makes the best chili ever. The puppy was originally OMG what was I thinking, but Zelda is truly part of our family. We are currently deciding on the perfect stocking for her first Christmas.
There were a couple. My employers who encouraged, not allowed, encouraged me to go be with my Dad, and coworkers who pitched in and got it done while I was gone. Second was an absolute angel in human guise sent to us by hospice in the person of Pastor Jim. They do walk among us.
Our new fuzzy nephew Finnegan. He is a beautiful, opinionated, and very mischievous Sheltie.
My dogs bring me light every day!
Being able to spend so much time with my parents due to remote work from anywhere!
My family, especially my baby nephews. They have learned to say my name!
My children always do. But my youngest son brought light this year. He started college this year and I was so nervous for him because of my two kids he is the one who is the most introverted and homebody. But I am thrilled he is embracing the experience in every way I wanted him to: he is engaged and excited by his classes, he gets along great with his roommate, and he is diving into fun extra-curriculars and student groups.
My neighbors. They have been keeping an eye on my place, knowing I don’t have housemates or any family nearby. They’ve done simple things, like stopping to chat a few minutes in the driveway, to bringing in my garbage cans before I get home, to making me part of Thanksgiving (when I couldn’t travel to be with family). They, and their two Little’s bring much joy to my life this year.
I didn’t mean for this to be so literal, but moving to an apartment with much more natural light has been good for a little bit of daily happiness.
YouTube livestreams (esp cat rescue and wildlife cams).
Happy Hanukkah and thanks for the giveaways.
My neighbors, who became friends.
I learned to knit this year, which has helped a lot with my anxiety. It’s been a huge light during the year!
I never thought I’d be an auntie. My brother and his partner had a surprise covid pregnancy. That ‘lil strawberry blonde chunky baby has my heart.
a raise at work!!
My pup, Ripley, has brought lightness and joy to our lives. He makes us laugh daily.
