Ancillary Justice

Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie is $2.99! know Carrie really loves this book (and the entire series, I believe). It’s also a Hugo Award winner! Readers really loved the scifi world building, though some admitted wanting more action in the first book of the Imperial Radch series.

Bookish and the Beast by Ashley Poston is $2.99! Carrie gave this YA romance a C:
Bookish and The Beast isn’t a WOW book, but it’s a comforting, often funny YA read for romance fans who are either geeks or geek-sympathetic and who enjoy Beauty and the Beast variations.
In the third book in Ashley Poston’s Once Upon a Con series, Beauty and the Beast is retold in the beloved Starfield universe.
Rosie Thorne is feeling stuck—on her college application essays, in her small town, and on that mysterious General Sond cosplayer she met at ExcelsiCon. Most of all, she’s stuck in her grief over her mother’s death. Her only solace was her late mother’s library of rare Starfield novels, but even that disappeared when they sold it to pay off hospital bills.
On the other hand, Vance Reigns has been Hollywood royalty for as long as he can remember—with all the privilege and scrutiny that entails. When a tabloid scandal catches up to him, he’s forced to hide out somewhere the paparazzi would never expect to find him: Small Town USA. At least there’s a library in the house. Too bad he doesn’t read.
When Rosie and Vance’s paths collide and a rare book is accidentally destroyed, Rosie finds herself working to repay the debt. And while most Starfield superfans would jump at the chance to work in close proximity to the Vance Reigns, Rosie has discovered something about Vance: he’s a jerk, and she can’t stand him. The feeling is mutual.
But as Vance and Rosie begrudgingly get to know each other, their careful masks come off—and they may just find that there’s more risk in shutting each other out than in opening their hearts.

A Holiday by Gaslight by Mimi Matthews is FREE! This is a historical romance novella set during a house party during the holidays. Sarah reviewed this one and gave it a C+. Here are some of the good things she said:
I liked the central romance, and I really liked Sophie and Ned. I liked the contrast in their conversations from before they agreed to be mutually candid and afterward. There were some moments I found incredibly charming, and some development of the story that was heartfelt and genuine.
A Dutiful Daughter
Sophie Appersett is quite willing to marry outside of her class to ensure the survival of her family. But the darkly handsome Mr. Edward Sharpe is no run of the mill London merchant. He’s grim and silent. A man of little emotion–or perhaps no emotion at all. After two months of courtship, she’s ready to put an end to things. After all, even a dutiful daughter has her limits.
A Taciturn Tradesman
Ned has come a long way since his days working as a draper’s assistant. He’s wealthy, ambitious, and eager to take a wife. But the courtship advice issued in The Gentlemen’s Book of Etiquette isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Though he’s followed it to the letter, Miss Appersett still doesn’t wish to see him again. Frustrated and hurt, he’s more than happy to oblige her.
A Christmas Courtship
Severing ties with her former beau isn’t as straightforward as Sophie envisioned. Her parents are outraged. And then there’s Charles Darwin, Prince Albert, and that dratted gaslight. What’s a girl to do except invite Mr. Sharpe to the annual Christmas party at Appersett House and give him one more chance to win her? But this time there’ll be no false formality. This time they’ll get to know each other for who they really are.

Desperate Measures by Katee Robert is 99c! This is book one in the Wicked Villains series, which are erotic retellings of popular Disney/fairy tale villains. I believe this sale is good until 12/1. Maya recently highly recommended this one in recent Rec League, but be warned that the content of the Rec League may spoil the ending to the book.
My Savior… Or My Ruin?
One night, and my entire life went up in flames. All because of him. Jafar. As my world burned down around me, he offered me a choice. Walk away with nothing but my freedom… Or rise to his challenge and win my fortune back.
I bargained.
I lost.
Now Jafar owns me, and even as my mind rails against his rules, my body loves the punishments he deals out when I break them.
But a gilded cage is still a prison, I’ll do anything to obtain my freedom.
Even betray the man I’m falling for.

I’m trying to be open-minded about YA romance (just because I’m sliding downhill to 60 doesn’t mean I shouldn’t embrace the younger generations, right?) but: teenage Hollywood idol surnamed Reigns? I mean I’m assuming teenage because otherwise him + high school heroine would be icky.
But honestly, what really makes me go OH NO is “rare book is accidentally destroyed.” I used to work for a rare-books dealer. No can do. 🙂 #SaveTheBook
I love Ancillary Justice — probably one of my favorite series. It’s a little slow to get into as it can take a bit to get one’s brain around the new concepts that the book introduces. But once the reader has the hang of what is going on, these are exciting and interesting reads.
I gave Holiday by Gaslight 5 stars. I really loved it. I know that Sarah and I have totally opposite tastes. If she doesn’t like it, I love it and vice versa. Ha ha. It’s pretty consistent and has been a useful tool.
I absolutely love this comment, so much. I’ve received a few email messages like this – “I love everything you hate! Thank you!” and it’s such a compliment. It means I’m consistent, and I really value knowing that! (Seriously, this made my entire day. Thank you.)
I read the Ancillary trilogy shortly after the third book came out, so I was able to binge the whole thing in like two weeks. I love detailed world building and it has that in spades.
Holiday by Gaslight was an A read for me. Now I’m wondering if I also always disagree with Sarah.
There are shades of North and South (especially the BBC production) in Holiday by Gaslight, if that leans anyone towards or against it.

@chacha1: I used to sell such books so I hear you loud and clear. A number of years ago, a popular novel ended with the rare book everyone was hunting for mangled, cover torn, basically destroyed. That was it for me.
Harvest Hopes by Jessica Ann Renwick is free. Her third book in the series Holiday Hopes now has a giveaway on Goodreads giveaway.
Years ago I was talking to someone and said that I got a number of remaindered books. She’d never heard the phrase and I explained how hardcovers that don’t sell are handled. Then I told her about paperbacks having the covers stripped off and returned to the publisher and the insides (the good parts!) either trashed or recycled. She was HORRIFIED.
@SB Sarah – I was trying to explain that to someone recently. I read certain reviewers because I like their writing/reviewing style, not because I agree with them. Over time, I get to know what they like, what they don’t, and where our tastes align. That way I can tell the difference between a 3-star review of something I’ll love, a 3-star review of something I’ll hate, and a 3-star review of something that I’ll also give 3 stars to.
If you can find reviewers who will consistently point you to the right stuff (even if it’s because they’re aggressively pointing the other direction), that’s a great reviewer!
@Todd: I’ve been the person who had to tear the cover off the paperback (you mail those back to get the return credit). when I worked for an independent book store back in the day. It was emotionally hard and felt very very wrong.
You know that book on your TBR pile that never gets read? That’s Ancillary Justice for me. I have tried so many times, have packed for 3-4 trips, and I can never get past the second chapter.
But I trust my fellow smart bitches, so I’ll keep going
If you aren’t an audiobook listener yet, Ancillary Justice (and the rest of the series) could change that. Adjoa Andoh is an absolutely amazing narrator and I re-listen to this series at least once every year.
