Links: Adele, Lord of the Rings, & More

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Hey all! It’s the Links post before Thanksgiving! I know the holidays can be a tough time, so I hope that whatever your plans are, they are enjoyable and restorative for you.

I definitely have some complicated feelings this year, as this is the first time in five years I won’t be spending it with my boyfriend’s (now ex, I suppose) large Italian family. But my roommate and I have made our own menu and divided dishes.

I’m roasting a chicken, doing the stuffing, and making a sangria. She’s doing the mashed potatoes, some roasted Brussel sprouts, and making a molten chocolate lava pie. She also wanted a small Christmas tree, which we’ll be putting up. It’s the first year my cat Linus will experience one with us and I think I’m looking forward to that the most!

What are your plants?

Shana sent this our way in Slack! It’s about the nightgowns and lingerie that graced many Gothic romance novels. Do you have a favorite? There are even suggestions on pieces to create your own “wandering through the moors” look.

I’m obsessed with the clip of Adele talking about her English teacher. This whole special seemed wonderful. There are clips of Emma Thompson dancing to every song.

The YouTube algorithm bestowed this upon me! The Food4Dogs channel is run by an older New Zealand woman and is all about her adventures in video games. This hour-plus video discusses how she got into it.

Big thanks to E.C. Spurlock for sending us this link, which may appeal to you all! It’s a review for a different kind of self-help book called Poe for Your Problems.

Lastly, this link comes to you from my very own brother. We love the Lord of the Rings movies and he sent this to me at around midnight my time. I had tears streaming down my face.

Don’t forget to share what cool or interesting things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

  1. I’m so sorry about the complicated feelings this year! But Thanksgiving with a friend sounds wonderful.

Plans in our American-British household are for a Thanksgiving celebration on Saturday with pizza, Indian food, and two pies.

These are great links, Amanda, thank you. Your Thanksgiving will be perfect and Linus is sure to enjoy (one way or the other) the tree. I’m off to see if I can learn about gaming at my age.

Got my covid booster yesterday and spent today feeling a little achy with a sore arm. However, I was still able to make all the side dishes (dressing, green bean casserole, creamed spinach) except mashed potatoes, which I’ll make tomorrow while the other side dishes are heating up. Hubby (aka, the Grillmeister) has the turkey cut up and brining in a salt-honey-spice mixture, ready for the Big Green Egg tomorrow. One of our daughters is making dessert (pumpkin tres leches cake). This actually feels like the most laid-back Thanksgiving I can remember since I became a mother. Happy Thanksgiving, Bitches!

I start forty hours of in-house and 28 hours of call for the weekend but I am expecting that the hospital will have some cranberry sauce tomorrow. I hope. Happily the teens are visiting my mother. Unhappily, I got to explain to her that if the grandkid’s romantic partner says they are a girl, we accept that even if they look otherwise. And we use the pronouns they prefer. Apparently this was not an issue in the 1940s when she was a young adult. But, after a couple of questions and comments, she is happy to do that and to speak up for them to other family members if necessary. Which makes me and the grandkid happy and thankful. I hope all of you have a great Thanksgiving with family that supports you.

  5. Karin says:

    Congrats on your booster, @DiscoDollyDeb!
My niece in Brooklyn hosted her first Thanksgiving, and she did a bang-up job! The funniest thing was, I guess everybody leaves the city to visit family on Thanksgiving, so we zipped right in, all the traffic was going in the opposite direction. The city looked half deserted, parking spots galore.

  6. Susan/DC says:

Was that Emma Thompson at the beginning of the Adele video?

As for Thanksgiving, we had a small celebration today, just my son, his wife, my granddaughter, and me. Tomorrow night the house will be full, as the out-of-town contingent arrives. My oldest son and his wife and little boy will be here, along with my youngest son and his girlfriend. It will be lovely but a bit bittersweet, as I’ve decided to downsize and sell the house where the boys grew up, so this is probably one of the last (and maybe the last) time we will all gather in this house.
