  • As You Wish

As You Wish by Cary Elwes

As You Wish by Cary Elwes is $1.99! This is a memoir about the making of The Princess Bride, which is a movie that many love (including myself). Readers say the nostalgia-factor is high and there’s even some discussion regarding Andre the Giant’s epic farts. However, some readers mention that the writing was a bit stilted at times.

From actor Cary Elwes, who played the iconic role of Westley in The Princess Bride, comes a first-person account and behind-the-scenes look at the making of the cult classic film filled with never-before-told stories, exclusive photographs, and interviews with costars Robin Wright, Wallace Shawn, Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest, and Mandy Patinkin, as well as author and screenwriter William Goldman, producer Norman Lear, and director Rob Reiner.

The Princess Bride has been a family favorite for close to three decades. Ranked by the American Film Institute as one of the top 100 Greatest Love Stories and by the Writers Guild of America as one of the top 100 screenplays of all time, The Princess Bride will continue to resonate with audiences for years to come.

Cary Elwes was inspired to share his memories and give fans an unprecedented look into the creation of the film while participating in the twenty-fifth anniversary cast reunion. In As You Wish he has created an enchanting experience; in addition to never-before seen photos and interviews with his fellow cast mates, there are plenty of set secrets, backstage stories, and answers to lingering questions about off-screen romances that have plagued fans for years!

With a foreword by Rob Reiner and a limited edition original poster by acclaimed artist Shepard Fairey, As You Wish is a must-have for all fans of this beloved film.

  • The Wrong Bride

The Wrong Bride by Gayle Callen

The Wrong Bride by Gayle Callen is 99c! This historical romance has a mistaken identity element and a hint of an arranged marriage. Some readers wished the heroine was a bit stronger in personality, while others recommend this for fans of slow burn romances. This is the first book in the Highland Weddings series

USA Today bestselling author Gayle Callen creates an unforgettable story of mistaken identity and irresistible attraction in this first in a wonderfully engaging series set in the Scottish Highlands…

Shaken from sleep during the night and bundled off to the Highlands by a burly Scot, Riona is at first terrified, then livid. Hugh McCallum insists they were promised to each other as children to ensure peace between their clans. The stubborn laird refuses to believe he’s kidnapped the wrong Catriona Duff. Instead, he embarks on a campaign of slow-burning seduction.

At first, Hugh cares only what their marriage can do for his people. Now he’s starting to crave Riona for her own sake, but her true identity jeopardizes his clan’s contract. And unless she chooses to risk all to be his bride, he’ll lose the only thing he prizes more than the lands he’s fought so hard to save—the passionate marriage they could have together.

  • A Change of Heart

A Change of Heart by Sonali Dev

A Change of Heart by Sonali Dev is $1.99! This book has been mentioned on several previous podcasts. This one is peak Dev angst, in my opinion. I’m also sad there are new illustrated covers. I personally don’t mind the trend, but the previous photography covers were so rich and gorgeous.

Dr. Nikhil ‘Nic’ Joshi had it all—marriage, career, purpose. Until, while working for Doctors Without Borders in a Mumbai slum, his wife, Jen, discovered a black market organ transplant ring. Before she could expose the truth, Jen was killed.

Two years after the tragedy, Nic is a cruise ship doctor who spends his days treating seasickness and sunburn and his nights in a boozy haze. On one of those blurry evenings on deck, Nic meets a woman who makes a startling claim: she received Jen’s heart in a transplant and has a message for him. Nic wants to discount Jess Koirala’s story as absurd, but there’s something about her reckless desperation that resonates despite his doubts.

Jess has spent years working her way out of a nightmarish life in Calcutta and into a respectable Bollywood dance troupe. Now she faces losing the one thing that matters—her young son, Joy.  She needs to uncover the secrets Jen risked everything for; but the unforeseen bond that results between her and Nic is both a lifeline and a perilous complication.

Delving beyond the surface of modern Indian-American life, acclaimed author Sonali Dev’s page-turning novel is both riveting and emotionally rewarding—an extraordinary story of human connection, bravery, and hope.

  • Tiger Eye

    Tiger Eye by Marjorie Liu

Tiger Eye by Marjorie M. Liu is $1.99! An older paranormal romance, this is the first book in the Dirk & Steele series, which focuses on a super secret detective agency. Though the pacing tended to slow at times, many readers loved the world Liu created.

He looks out of place in Dela Reese’s Beijing hotel room- exotic and poignant, some mythic, tragic hero of an epic tale. With his feline yellow eyes, he’s like nothing from her world. Yet Dela has danced through the echo of his soul and knows this warrior will obey her every command.

Hari has been used and abused for millennia. But he sees, upon his release from the riddle box, that this new mistress is different. There is a hidden power in Dela’s eyes- and with her, he may regain all that was lost to him. Where once he savaged, now he must protect; where once he only knew hatred, now he must embrace love. Dela is the key. For Dela, he will risk all.

I like Sonali Dev but had to DNF A Change of Heart — too bleak.

  3. Suleikha Snyder says:

I love Marjorie Liu’s stuff, and I feel compelled to tell you all that there is a sex scene in TIGER EYE while Hari is in tiger form. I reread it recently and was surprised I’d forgotten about it.

And folks today think they’re being edgy? LMAO.

Also, I adored CHANGE OF HEART. It’s probably my favorite Sonali Dev *because* it’s bleak.

  6. Msb says:

As You Wish may be nice, but why not just reread The Princess Bride?

  7. Georgina says:

As You Wish is enjoyable, but there’s not a lot to it. it’s one of those super positive Everyone Was Great! celebrity memoirs that mostly skates by on the reader’s affection for the movie.

I don’t regret reading it — sometimes you just want something warm and relaxing — but it didn’t leave much of an impression beyond that.

  8. seantheaussie says:

As you wish was great fun IMHO. I literally looked it up 3 days ago in order to see if there were any similar books to it for other movies that I love. Neither goodreads or amazon had anything

  9. Pear says:

I feel like the illustrated cover is really wrong for the angst level of the Dev—I get that her more recent series has used illustrated covers and these new ones are trying to tie in, but A CHANGE OF HEART deals with some *very* bleak themes and the cartoonish aspect feels inappropriate. I also found the photo covers to be very elegant, and not at odds with the subject(s) so much.

  10. I love the old covers for Dev’s work better. It conveys the angst level *way* better, and just looks nicer imo.

When my Kindle updated the cover I had a moment of “wait, did I buy a new book and not remember?”

  11. wingednike says:

    @seantheaussie
Not books, but the Netflix series “The Movies that Made Us” might fit the bill for you.

  12. seantheaussie says:

@wingednike there are certainly some beloved movies covered in that series. Thanks.
