  • The Lady and Her Monsters

The Lady and Her Monsters by Roseanne Montillo

The Lady and Her Monsters by Roseanne Montillo is $1.99! This is part biography and part sciene, as Montillo weaves in Mary Shelley’s experience working on Dr. Frankenstein and the science behind it. Carrie mentioned it her Mary Shelley birthday post, but warns of animal cruelty.

The Lady and Her Monsters by Roseanne Motillo brings to life the fascinating times, startling science, and real-life horrors behind Mary Shelley’s gothic masterpiece, Frankenstein.

Montillo recounts how—at the intersection of the Romantic Age and the Industrial Revolution—Shelley’s Victor Frankenstein was inspired by actual scientists of the period: curious and daring iconoclasts who were obsessed with the inner workings of the human body and how it might be reanimated after death.

With true-life tales of grave robbers, ghoulish experiments, and the ultimate in macabre research—human reanimation—The Lady and Her Monsters is a brilliant exploration of the creation of Frankenstein, Mary Shelley’s horror classic.

  • All Dressed in White

All Dressed in White by Charis Michaels

All Dressed in White by Charis Michaels is $1.99! This is book two in the Brides of Belgravia series. The hero and heroine enter into a marriage of convenience, the hero fucks off to somewhere for a while, and then returns to see that his wife has developed a life for herself. That’s a very niche brand of catnip.

Self-made shipping magnate Joseph Chance never planned on falling in love. He simply needed financing for a new business venture and a marriage of convenience provides it. Then he meets Tessa St. Croix, his future bride, and is instantly smitten. But when the angelic beauty reveals a life-changing secret on their wedding night, Joseph thinks maybe some dreams shouldn’t come true. He leaves England, reconciling himself to a detached, convenient marriage after all.

Eleven months later, Tessa Chance has built a new life for herself in the heart of London. She’s learned her new husband’s business and is determined to support herself and her responsibilities. When Joseph returns to London unexpectedly, nothing is as he imagined. His estranged wife has become the one person who can help him secure his company’s future, and her allure can tempt him still. Determined and hopeful, Tessa jumps at the chance to prove herself and justify the secret that tore them apart.

Although bruised pride and broken hearts lie between them, Joseph and Tessa realize the love they once felt has never truly left. If they can learn to forgive each other, they’ll soon discover the truest love can heal all wounds.

  • Coming Up Roses

Coming Up Roses by Staci Hart

Coming Up Roses by Staci Hart is FREE! This is a Pride and Prejudice inspired contemporary romance set at a flower shop. And no, I don’t believe the characters are Thumbalina-sized people.

Everyone hates parts of their job.

Maybe it’s the paperwork. Maybe it’s the day-to-day grind. Maybe it’s that client who never knows what they want, or the guy who always cooks fish in the microwave.

But not me. I love every corner of the Longbourne Flower Shop, every flower, every petal, every stem. I love the greenhouse, and I love Mrs. Bennet, my boss. I love creating, and I love being a florist. I don’t hate anything at all.

    Except for Luke Bennet.

The Bennet brothers have come home to help their mom save the flower shop, and Luke is at the helm. His smile tells a tale of lust, loose and easy. He moves with the grace of a predator, feral and wild. A thing unbridled, without rules or constraint.

When he comes home to save Longbourne, I almost can’t be mad at him.

    Almost.

He doesn’t remember that night I’ll never forget. That kiss, touched with whiskey and fire. It branded me like a red-hot iron. But it meant nothing to him.

Everyone hates part of their job, and I hate Luke Bennet.
Because if I don’t, I’ll fall in love with him.

  • The Ancestor

    The Ancestor by Danielle Trussoni

The Ancestor by Danielle Trussoni is $2.99! This is a Gothic horror mystery set at an Italian estate. Do check Goodreads for all of the content warnings as there are several, with genetic experiments certainly being high on that list.

From the New York Times, USA Today, and internationally bestselling author of the Angelology series comes a bewitching gothic novel of suspense that plunges readers into a world of dark family secrets, the mysteries of human genetics, and the burden of family inheritance.

It feels like a fairy tale when Alberta ”Bert” Monte receives a letter addressed to “Countess Alberta Montebianco” at her Hudson Valley, New York, home that claims she’s inherited a noble title, money, and a castle in Italy. While Bert is more than a little skeptical, the mystery of her aristocratic family’s past, and the chance to escape her stressful life for a luxury holiday in Italy, is too good to pass up.

At first, her inheritance seems like a dream come true: a champagne-drenched trip on a private jet to Turin, Italy; lawyers with lists of artwork and jewels bequeathed to Bert; a helicopter ride to an ancestral castle nestled in the Italian Alps below Mont Blanc; a portrait gallery of ancestors Bert never knew existed; and a cellar of expensive vintage wine for Bert to drink.

But her ancestry has a dark side, and Bert soon learns that her family history is particularly complicated. As Bert begins to unravel the Montebianco secrets, she begins to realize her true inheritance lies not in a legacy of ancestral treasures, but in her very genes.

Coming Up Roses is free on Kobo too!

  2. Akat says:

All Dressed in White is giving me Tess of the D’urbervilles vibes (and by the negative reviews, it’s intentional). I’m not sure how well Hardy would translate to a fun historical romp. And I don’t think I want to find out.

  3. Todd says:

I don’t think Hardy did “fun” … I read a lot of his books and liked them, but fun wasn’t part of his repertoire.

  4. Carrie G says:

If you’re a romantic suspense fan, Rachel Grant’s Tinderbox, the first in her Flashpoint series, is FREE on Amazon. The entire series is on KU, and you can add the audiobook for $1.99. These are very strong RS books with a good balance of suspense plot and romance. The plots arealso strong and Grant’s writing gives a very strong sense of place, in this case the Horn of Africa.

  5. Susanna says:

Heh. Hardy referred to his novels as “his pot-boilers.”

That said, I do not want to read a “romance” based on Tess!

  6. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Re Thomas Hardy: Just wait until you read the JUDE THE OBSCURE-inspired romance. Hi-jinx, laughs, and rompy fun for all!

  7. Jenny says:

Gilded Lily, the second one in Stacy Hart’s Bennet Brothers series is free, too–so I nabbed both Coming Up Roses and Gilded Lily.

  8. Laura says:

@DiscoDollyDeb made me snort laugh. I guess my reading is very compartmentalized because I prefer to keep my Hardy favorites over here and romance novels over there. What’s next? A Bronte rewrite of Wuthering Heights without the a–holes and ghosts? LOL

  9. Lauren says:

I would enjoy reading a Mayor of Casterbridge screwball farce. Between wife-selling and mistaken paternity, all sorts of hilarity is possible! (*snark*)

  10. Sara says:

“the hero fucks off to somewhere for awhile” – yea I needed that turn of phrase.
    Made my evening!!!

  11. @Amanda says:

    @Sara: : )

  12. EJ says:

Are there books where the heroine fucks off somewhere while the hero holds down the fort in her absence? I would read that.

  13. @Amanda says:

@EJ: Maybe a future rec league?
