    Broken by Jenny Lawson

Broken by Jenny Lawson is $3.99! A couple of use here at SBTB have really loved Lawsons’ previous two memoir collections and this is her third, which came out this April. Humor can certainly be subjective. If you’re tempted by this one, but are unsure if her voice will work for you, she has a long-running blog: The Bloggess

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Furiously Happy and Let’s Pretend This Never Happened comes a deeply relatable book filled with humor and honesty about depression and anxiety.

As Jenny Lawson’s hundreds of thousands of fans know, she suffers from depression. In Broken, Jenny brings readers along on her mental and physical health journey, offering heartbreaking and hilarious anecdotes along the way.

With people experiencing anxiety and depression now more than ever, Jenny humanizes what we all face in an all-too-real way, reassuring us that we’re not alone and making us laugh while doing it. From the business ideas that she wants to pitch to Shark Tank to the reason why Jenny can never go back to the post office, Broken leaves nothing to the imagination in the most satisfying way. And of course, Jenny’s long-suffering husband Victor―the Ricky to Jenny’s Lucille Ball―is present throughout.

A treat for Jenny Lawson’s already existing fans, and destined to convert new ones, Broken is a beacon of hope and a wellspring of laughter when we all need it most.

  • Finlay Donovan Is Killing It

Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano

Finlay Donovan is Killing It by Elle Cosimano is $2.99! This is a mystery series about a suspense writer who gets mistaken for a hit woman. I started listening to this one and I’m finding it to be pretty entertaining.

    IT’S MURDER BEING A HIT-MOM

“Getting the job done” for one single mom takes on a whole new meaning in Finlay Donovan is Killing It, a deliciously witty adult debut—the first in a brilliant new series from YA Edgar Award nominee Elle Cosimano.

Finlay Donovan is killing it . . . except, she’s really not. She’s a stressed-out single-mom of two and struggling novelist, Finlay’s life is in chaos: the new book she promised her literary agent isn’t written, her ex-husband fired the nanny without telling her, and this morning she had to send her four-year-old to school with hair duct-taped to her head after an incident with scissors.

When Finlay is overheard discussing the plot of her new suspense novel with her agent over lunch, she’s mistaken for a contract killer, and inadvertently accepts an offer to dispose of a problem husband in order to make ends meet . . . Soon, Finlay discovers that crime in real life is a lot more difficult than its fictional counterpart, as she becomes tangled in a real-life murder investigation.

Fast-paced, deliciously witty, and wholeheartedly authentic in depicting the frustrations and triumphs of motherhood in all its messiness, hilarity, and heartfelt moments, Finlay Donovan Is Killing It is the first in a brilliant new series from award-winning author Elle Cosimano.

  • The Wife Upstairs

The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins

The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins is $2.99! Since this is a thriller inspired by Jane Eyre, you know Carrie had to review this one. She gave it a B:

At its best, the book was a searing condemnation of the hollowness of the rich and at its worst it was compelling fun. I rooted for Jane even at her most amoral, because I knew she was lonely and adrift, and I couldn’t put the book down, because I couldn’t guess what would happen next. And then I re-read it.

A delicious twist on a Gothic classic, The Wife Upstairs pairs Southern charm with atmospheric domestic suspense, perfect for fans of B.A. Paris and Megan Miranda.

Meet Jane. Newly arrived to Birmingham, Alabama, Jane is a broke dog-walker in Thornfield Estates––a gated community full of McMansions, shiny SUVs, and bored housewives. The kind of place where no one will notice if Jane lifts the discarded tchotchkes and jewelry off the side tables of her well-heeled clients. Where no one will think to ask if Jane is her real name.

But her luck changes when she meets Eddie Rochester. Recently widowed, Eddie is Thornfield Estates’ most mysterious resident. His wife, Bea, drowned in a boating accident with her best friend, their bodies lost to the deep. Jane can’t help but see an opportunity in Eddie––not only is he rich, brooding, and handsome, he could also offer her the kind of protection she’s always yearned for.

Yet as Jane and Eddie fall for each other, Jane is increasingly haunted by the legend of Bea, an ambitious beauty with a rags-to-riches origin story, who launched a wildly successful southern lifestyle brand. How can she, plain Jane, ever measure up? And can she win Eddie’s heart before her past––or his––catches up to her?

With delicious suspense, incisive wit, and a fresh, feminist sensibility, The Wife Upstairs flips the script on a timeless tale of forbidden romance, ill-advised attraction, and a wife who just won’t stay buried. In this vivid reimagining of one of literature’s most twisted love triangles, which Mrs. Rochester will get her happy ending?

  • Ten Rules for Faking It

Ten Rules for Faking It by Sophie Sullivan

Ten Rules for Faking It by Sophie Sullivan is $1.99! When a radio producer’s break up rant is accidentally live on the air, the station decides to launch a Bachelorette style contest, though the heroine may already be falling for her boss. It sounds like there’s a lot going on here. Have you read it?

What happens when your love life becomes the talk of the town?

As birthdays go, this year’s for radio producer Everly Dean hit rock-bottom.

Worse than the “tonsillectomy birthday.” Worse than the birthday her parents decided to split (the first time). But catching your boyfriend cheating on you with his assistant?

    Even clichés sting.

But this is Everly’s year! She won’t let her anxiety hold her back. She’ll pitch her podcast idea to her boss.

    There’s just one problem.

Her boss, Chris, is very cute. (Of course). Also, he’s extremely distant (which means he hates her, right? Or is that the anxiety talking)?

And, Stacey the DJ didn’t mute the mic during Everly’s rant about Simon the Snake (syn: Cheating Ex).

    That’s three problems.

Suddenly, people are lining up to date her, Bachelorette-style, fans are voting (Reminder: never leave house again), and her interest in Chris might be a two-way street. It’s a lot for a woman who could gold medal in people-avoidance. She’s going to have to fake it ‘till she makes it to get through all of this.

Perhaps she’ll make a list: The Ten Rules for Faking It.

Because sometimes making the rules can find you happiness when you least expect it.

  1. Darlynne says:

I really enjoyed FINLAY DONOVAN IS KILLING IT and am eager to read the next book. There isn’t one thing remotely believable about the story, except for Finlay’s journey to figuring out what she wants while coping with two kids and a missed deadline for a book she hasn’t even started. Really, who cares if it’s OTT, the book is just plain fun. Highly recommended.

BROKEN is another Jenny Lawson hit and I’d have been happy with just a copy of the cover because isn’t that all of us these days? With the hardback purchase on Independent Bookstore Day, I received a pack of her Oracle cards with quotes from the book and I read them every day. Forgive yourself for being broken. For being you. For thinking those are things you need forgiveness for. And Be good. Be kind. Fuck everything else. There is no one like Jenny.

Loving the Marquess by S. medeiros is free

  3. Lostshadows says:

I just finished reading Broken a few days ago. I liked it a lot, but it seemed more serious, overall, than the other two books.

Still, well worth the read, if you like her style, especially at that price. (If you want a physical copy, it’s part of B&N’s book haul sale, so 50% off until the 6th iirc.)

  4. JudyW says:

I too read and enjoyed the Finley Donovan book. Unrealistically fun as can be!
