  • Duke Darcy’s Castle

Duke Darcy’s Castle by Syrie James

Duke Darcy’s Castle by Syrie James is $1.99! This is the third Dare to Defy historical romance and I believe we snarked on this a little bit. I haven’t heard James’s books talked about a lot here. Have you read any?

In Syrie James’ newest Dare to Defy novel, a devastating duke goes head to head with a determined young woman.

Lance Granville, the Tenth Duke of Darcy, was none too happy to give up his career in the Royal Navy to inherit the family title, complete with an ancient crumbling castle he needs to renovate. When an architect arrives on his doorstep, Darcy is astonished to discover that she’s a woman.

Kathryn Atherton has one goal: to become the first woman architect in Britain. Marriage doesn’t figure in her plans. Despite the odds, her schooling is behind her. Now she needs experience. When she’s sent to a small tidal island in Cornwall to remodel a castle, the last thing Kathryn wants is to be attracted to its roguishly handsome owner.

Kathryn is determined to keep things professional, but the sizzling attraction between her and the duke quickly blazes out of control. When Darcy learns that Kathryn is an heiress whose fortune would save St. Gabriel’s Mount, he wages the most important battle of his life: to woo and win the woman who’s captured his heart. But duchesses can’t be architects. And Kathryn has worked too long and too hard to give up her dreams…

  • Tools of Engagement

Tools of Engagement by Tessa Bailey

Tools of Engagement by Tessa Bailey is $1.99! This is book three in the Hot & Hammered series, which are romances that focus on home reno projects. I’m a Bailey fan, but I’ve been rather disappointed by this series. However, your mileage may vary!

In Tessa Bailey’s latest rom-com, two enemies team up to flip a house… and the sparks between them might burn the place down or ignite a passion that neither can ignore!

Hair, makeup, clothing, decor… everything in Bethany Castle’s world is organized, planned, and styled to perfection. Which is why the homes she designs for her family’s real estate business are the most coveted in town. The only thing not perfect? Her track record with men. She’s on a dating hiatus and after helping her friends achieve their dreams, Bethany finally has time to focus on her own: flip a house, from framework to furnishings, all by herself. Except her older brother runs the company and refuses to take her seriously.

When a television producer gets wind of the Castle sibling rivalry, they’re invited on Flip Off, a competition to see who can do the best renovation. Bethany wants bragging rights, but she needs a crew and the only member of her brother’s construction team willing to jump ship is Wes Daniels, the new guy in town. His Texas drawl and handsome face got under Bethany’s skin on day one, but the last thing she needs is some cocky young cowboy in her way.

As the race to renovate heats up, Wes and Bethany are forced into close quarters, trading barbs and biting banter as they remodel the ugliest house on the block. It’s a labor of love, hate, and everything in between, and soon sparks are flying. But Bethany’s perfectly structured life is one kiss away from going up in smoke and she knows falling for a guy like Wes would be a flipping disaster.

  • The Trial of Lizzie Borden

The Trial of Lizzie Borden by Cara Robertson

RECOMMENDEDThe Trial of Lizzie Borden by Cara Roberston is $2.99! Elyse gave this one an A grade, which is pretty impressive:

If you want to read about how our understanding of gender vilified and later exonerated and then again vilified a complicated woman, then again this book is for you. It’s easily one of the best true crime books I’ve read to date.

The remarkable new account of an essential piece of American mythology—the trial of Lizzie Borden—based on twenty years of research and recently unearthed evidence.

The Trial of Lizzie Borden tells the true story of one of the most sensational murder trials in American history. When Andrew and Abby Borden were brutally hacked to death in Fall River, Massachusetts, in August 1892, the arrest of the couple’s younger daughter Lizzie turned the case into international news and her trial into a spectacle unparalleled in American history. Reporters flocked to the scene. Well-known columnists took up conspicuous seats in the courtroom. The defendant was relentlessly scrutinized for signs of guilt or innocence. Everyone—rich and poor, suffragists and social conservatives, legal scholars and laypeople—had an opinion about Lizzie Borden’s guilt or innocence. Was she a cold-blooded murderess or an unjustly persecuted lady? Did she or didn’t she?

The popular fascination with the Borden murders and its central enigmatic character has endured for more than one hundred years. Immortalized in rhyme, told and retold in every conceivable genre, the murders have secured a place in the American pantheon of mythic horror, but one typically wrenched from its historical moment. In contrast, Cara Robertson explores the stories Lizzie Borden’s culture wanted and expected to hear and how those stories influenced the debate inside and outside of the courtroom. Based on transcripts of the Borden legal proceedings, contemporary newspaper accounts, unpublished local accounts, and recently unearthed letters from Lizzie herself, The Trial of Lizzie Borden offers a window onto America in the Gilded Age, showcasing its most deeply held convictions and its most troubling social anxieties.

  • Lore

    Lore by Alexandra Bracken

Lore by Alexandra Bracken is $1.99! It’s only available at Amazon right now, so it could be expiring soon. This is contemporary YA fantasy with mythology. I’ve heard this one is actually pretty violent, so be sure to check reviews.

From the #1 New York Times best-selling author of The Darkest Minds comes a sweepingly ambitious, high-octane tale of power, destiny, love and redemption.

Every seven years, the Agon begins. As punishment for a past rebellion, nine Greek gods are forced to walk the earth as mortals, hunted by the descendants of ancient bloodlines, all eager to kill a god and seize their divine power and immortality.

Long ago, Lore Perseous fled that brutal world in the wake of her family’s sadistic murder by a rival line, turning her back on the hunt’s promises of eternal glory. For years she’s pushed away any thought of revenge against the man–now a god–responsible for their deaths.

Yet as the next hunt dawns over New York City, two participants seek out her help: Castor, a childhood friend of Lore believed long dead, and a gravely wounded Athena, among the last of the original gods.

The goddess offers an alliance against their mutual enemy and, at last, a way for Lore to leave the Agon behind forever. But Lore’s decision to bind her fate to Athena’s and rejoin the hunt will come at a deadly cost–and still may not be enough to stop the rise of a new god with the power to bring humanity to its knees.

    Lore: that cover is amazing!!!

  2. Lisa F says:

I’ve read James and her work is around a C-average for me; nothing too outstanding. All the rest are worthwhile IMO!

  3. Amy says:

Murder on Cold Street by Sherry Thomas is on sale 2.99 on Amazon.

  4. Msb says:

Has anybody read Lore? It sounds interesting. Of course, Athena (and Apollo and Zeus) figure in Jo Walton’s Thessaly trilogy, which I adored.

  5. Charlie says:

I read Lore and really enjoyed it. I’ve read a fair amount of mythology based books and this one was up there for me. There’s a lot happening, but it all ties together and I was left satisfied with the ending. I also appreciated that it’s a standalone.
Also, it is definitely quite violent, but considering the premise is basically murder the gods with a side of murder other people, it makes sense.

  6. Musette says:

Re the Tessa Bailey: I read books 1 and 3 (I think Tools of Engagement is #3) and loved #1 (Fix Her Up) – this one (#3) is a bit weird and disengaging, imo.
