Getting to hug my daughter. She’s been in California, my husband and I live in Oregon. We had a lovely Zoom call at Thanksgiving. But that was nothing like her loving presence for almost a week at the end of August this year. (all of us vaxxed to the max!).

    Also, she got tenure!

I discovered Ilona Andrews through the Innkeeper series right before the pandemic struck and loved that series and all the others from them last year so much, except for some reason I held out on reading the Kate Daniels series (I guess afraid they wouldn’t live up to the hype). Finally started that in January of this year and happily the books were just as great as everyone says. Other than that, I’ve mostly done a LOT of re-reading for comfort and joy in 2021 – Murderbot, pretty much all of Tessa Dare, the rest of Ilona Andrews again, even dipped back into Pennyroyal Green – so good to have go-to re-reads for stressful times! Oh I did discover Heated Rivalry from Rachel Reid this year and really got a lot of enjoyment out of that (and the rest of the game changers series).

  3. GB says:

Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall was a joy for me to read this year. I kept picturing Colin Firth as the heartmelting Oliver.

  4. Tünde says:

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia I do not usually read horror but this just pulled me in and had an amazing time.

  5. Anita H. says:

I haven’t read too much this year but Sarah Maclean’s Brazen and the Beast was such a treat to read! I loved everything about this book from Hattie’s business smarts with her running her dad’s shipping business to Whit’s lush private room complete with his stack of books (I mean, who can say no to a guy who is a voracious reader!!!)This was everything I love about reading romance!

  6. Teresa Rutledge says:

I just found the Mercy Kilpatrick mystery series. Not sure when they were written, but mystery with a hint of romance and at least one murder in each book. She’s FBI and he’s the town police chief.

  7. Bee says:

The Murderbot books are so strangely relatable and also hopeful, so they have given me lots of joy. I love whenever one of the humans shows respect and/or affection for Murderbot – Murderbot is never expecting it and it always makes my heart happy!

  8. Kelly says:

Two books really brought me joy this year. Happy Singles Day by Ann Marie Walker and Must Love Cowboys by Carly Bloom. Both books are about happily single women who find love in the most unexpected way with men they don’t particularly like. I related with the women in these books and seeing myself in them made me so happy! I would definitely recommend these books if you haven’t read them!

  9. Jennifer says:

One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston and Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake by Alexis Hall and all the Murderbot Diaries!!

  10. Jen M. says:

I just finished The Dating Playbook by Farrah Rochon, and it was wonderful!

  11. ML says:

Blood Heir by Ilona Andrews. It is a side series to her Kate Daniels books

  12. Tina says:

I have really been enjoying the Will Darling Adventures series by KJ Charles! A great series if you’re a fan of both mysteries and romance.

  13. Elisha G. says:

I really enjoyed The AI Who Loved Me by Alyssa Cole (really anything by her is fabulous) and Broken by Jenny Lawson, which brought me out of one of the biggest reading slumps I’ve ever had. Spoiler Alert by Olivia Dade, Isn’t It Bromantic by Lyssa Kay Adams and Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert were also favs this year.

  14. JoanneBB says:

I re-read Avery Flynn’s Ice Knights series. Awk-weird is my favourite but I like them all, I couldn’t deal with high risk conflicts or very dark dark moments lately/in 2020/2021.

  15. Katie says:

I’ve gotten sucked into the Penny Reid universe and am loving it!

Also Jasmine Guillory’s newest While We Were Dating. I recommend her novels to *everybody*

  16. Amanda says:

I loved The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins. It was a great take on Jane Eyre.

  17. Melissa says:

Wrong Alibi by Christina Dodd was great this year.

  18. Kelly S Wittie says:

The Lady Sherlock series by Sherry Thomas has been invaluable this year. Intelligent, sexy, and thrilling all in one!

  19. Amanda says:

Love at First by Kate Clayborn was a lovely, comforting read during a truly chaotic time.

  20. Kit C says:

I reread all of Gail Carriger’s books and it was so comforting to revisit that world and see all the characters come together in her Parasolverse.

  21. Brittany M says:

I loved Bidding For The Bachelor, by Jackie Lau. I smiled the whole time I was reading it. The House In The Cerulean Sea, You Should See Me In A Crown, Act Your Age Eve Brown, People We Meet On Vacation, and Boyfriend Material were all joy inducing as well.

  22. Januari Paul says:

“Isn’t it Bromantic” by Lyssa Kay Adams brought me so much joy this year! I have loved this whole series, but I just loved the MC- The Russian.

  23. Mary says:

I finally read One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston, and oh my god, it was exactly what I needed. Ended my reading slump, cleared my skin, watered my crops, etc. Sometimes you just find the perfect book at the perfect time.

  24. Krystal says:

Man Vs Durian by Jackie Lau. It was incredibly relatable to my old situation from years back and it had an incredibly cathartic moment where Valerie tells off someone who hurt her and it was just chef’s kiss worthy.

  25. Morgan says:

I really liked The Hating Game, by Sally Thorne. I wasn’t expecting to like it so much!
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  26. Heather Roach says:

The Brown sisters books by Talia Hibbert

  27. Eliza Whiting says:

I recently finished Efrén Divided by Ernesto Cisneros, and that book brought me a lot of joy. It’s not a romance, and it’s not even a happy book, but the intense familial love and sense of truly caring about each other’s happiness and trying to find small ways to bring joy to each other, that brightened my week immensely.

  28. Heather N. Johnson says:

Linesman by SK Dunstall – I love a space opera. The series is finished (I think) and they have a touch of romance and a lot of adventure!

  29. Meg says:

Spoiler Alert by Olivia Dade made me so happy! I’ve preordered the sequel.

  30. Daniela GB says:

I was really looking forward to Role Model by Rachel Reid (the 5th book in her Game Changers M/M hockey romance series). I was a little afraid that I’d built it up so much in my mind that I would be disappointed but turns out I had nothing to worry about! So Role Model has brought me so much joy this year, it was everything I wanted and more!

  31. Beatriz says:

Finishing the MaidenLane series by Elizabeth Hoyt. Late to the party, I know

  32. trefoil says:

I read all of Rhys Bowen’s Royal Spyness series this year and it was so soothing to step into a world where there was always a resolution to the crime by the end of the book.

  33. Diamond K. says:

Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry by Joya Goffrey

  34. Vicki says:

There have been several books that have held onto me during this past year. One was The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison. It just seemed so elegaic and the writing was calming and the story held my interest.

I also re-read The Woodcutter by Kate Danley. Fantasy, not a romance but I think of it as a love story, it is very relaxing in a strange way. Maybe the familiarity of the stories, though we see them through a different lens. I tend to read it in bits and pieces on my way to bed.

There are a couple of Noras that I just sink into. I think it is her descriptions, the way some of them just take you into the landscape and the lifescape. I just flew back from visiting my daughter for the first time in two years. I sat next to a woman reading one of my favorites, The Obsession, for the first time. How I envied her. I love that dog! And the photography, the descriptions so restful, somehow.

And there is always Betty Neels. I have been reading her forever and her universe is so ordered and human.

  35. Heather C says:

Official response: The Tribulations of Ross Young, Supernat PA by A.J. Sherwood. Just a comedic delight

Unofficial response: Into the Fire: The Complete Series by Mia West because they pulled me out of the worst book slump of my adult life.

  36. Rachel says:

One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston. Sweet little queer romance.

  37. Evalla says:

Shadoweyes and Shadoweyes in Love Ive read a few times this year. And Im always re reading Alice. I have a plan to record myself reading it and give it to my niece for xmas.

  38. Hanna says:

I haven’t had much time to read this year as I started nursing school in May and I have almost no free time. But in those moments where I need a breather to enjoy myself, I pick up a KJ Charles book. She released 2 books this year and both of them, most recently Subtle Blood, brought me so much happiness and contentment in a year of stress and chaos. I really don’t know what I’m going to do when I run out of her books…

  39. Liz N. says:

I loved The Guncle and also I Thought You Said This Would Work. Both were so emotional and moving!

  40. Susam says:

Butterfly Bayou series by Lexi Blake
