  • Two Steps Forward

Two Steps Forward by Graeme Simsion

Two Steps Forward by Graeme Simsion and Anne Buist is $1.99! Sarah read this one and gave it a B- grade:

While I can see and enumerate the flaws I found in my own experience with this book, I also very much enjoyed it, and feel honored to have experienced the Camino with the characters, and the journey within the story itself.

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Rosie Projectcomes a story of taking chances and learning to love again as two people, one mourning her husband and the other recovering from divorce, cross paths on the centuries-old Camino pilgrimage from France to Spain.

“The Chemin will change you. It changes everyone…”

The Chemin, also known as the Camino de Santiago, is a centuries-old pilgrim route that ends in Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain. Every year, thousands of walkers—some devout, many not—follow the route that wends through quaint small villages and along busy highways alike, a journey unlike any other.

Zoe, an artist from California who’s still reeling from her husband’s sudden death, has impulsively decided to walk the Camino, hoping to find solace and direction. Martin, an engineer from England, is road-testing a cart of his own design…and recovering from a messy divorce. They begin in the same French town, each uncertain of what the future holds. Zoe has anticipated the physical difficulties of her trek, but she is less prepared for other challenges, as strangers and circumstances force her to confront not just recent loss, but long-held beliefs. For Martin, the pilgrimage is a test of his skills and endurance but also, as he and Zoe grow closer, of his willingness to trust others—and himself—again.

Smart and funny, insightful and romantic, Two Steps Forwardreveals that the most important journeys we make aren’t measured in miles, but in the strength, wisdom, and love found along the way. Fans of The Rosie Project will recognize Graeme Simsion’s uniquely quirky and charming writing style.

  • The Cooking Gene

The Cooking Gene by Michael Twitty

RECOMMENDED: The Cooking Gene by Michael W. Twitty is $1.99! This is not necessarily a cookbook, but part memoir and part cooking history. It had a huge Squee from RHG. Did you pick this one up? What were your thoughts?

A renowned culinary historian offers a fresh perspective on our most divisive cultural issue, race, in this illuminating memoir of Southern cuisine and food culture that traces his ancestry—both black and white—through food, from Africa to America and slavery to freedom.

Southern food is integral to the American culinary tradition, yet the question of who “owns” it is one of the most provocative touch points in our ongoing struggles over race. In this unique memoir, culinary historian Michael W. Twitty takes readers to the white-hot center of this fight, tracing the roots of his own family and the charged politics surrounding the origins of soul food, barbecue, and all Southern cuisine.

From the tobacco and rice farms of colonial times to plantation kitchens and backbreaking cotton fields, Twitty tells his family story through the foods that enabled his ancestors’ survival across three centuries. He sifts through stories, recipes, genetic tests, and historical documents, and travels from Civil War battlefields in Virginia to synagogues in Alabama to Black-owned organic farms in Georgia.

As he takes us through his ancestral culinary history, Twitty suggests that healing may come from embracing the discomfort of the Southern past. Along the way, he reveals a truth that is more than skin deep—the power that food has to bring the kin of the enslaved and their former slaveholders to the table, where they can discover the real America together.

  • Monster, She Wrote

Monster, She Wrote by Lisa Kroger

RECOMMENDED: Monster She Wrote by Lisa Kröger and Melanie R. Anderson is $2.99! Carrie loved this one and gave it an A:

I can’t emphasize enough how well this collection hits the sweet spot of fun (Quotes! Illustrations! Anecdotes! Humor!) and informative. I will be using this book as a resource frequently.

Meet the women writers who defied convention to craft some of literature’s strangest tales, from Frankenstein to The Haunting of Hill House and beyond.

Frankenstein was just the beginning: horror stories and other weird fiction wouldn’t exist without the women who created it. From Gothic ghost stories to psychological horror to science fiction, women have been primary architects of speculative literature of all sorts. And their own life stories are as intriguing as their fiction. Everyone knows about Mary Shelley, creator of Frankenstein, who was rumored to keep her late husband’s heart in her desk drawer. But have you heard of Margaret “Mad Madge” Cavendish, who wrote a science-fiction epic 150 years earlier (and liked to wear topless gowns to the theater)? If you know the astounding work of Shirley Jackson, whose novel The Haunting of Hill House was reinvented as a Netflix series, then try the psychological hauntings of Violet Paget, who was openly involved in long-term romantic relationships with women in the Victorian era. You’ll meet celebrated icons (Ann Radcliffe, V. C. Andrews), forgotten wordsmiths (Eli Colter, Ruby Jean Jensen), and today’s vanguard (Helen Oyeyemi). Curated reading lists point you to their most spine-chilling tales.

Part biography, part reader’s guide, the engaging write-ups and detailed reading lists will introduce you to more than a hundred authors and over two hundred of their mysterious and spooky novels, novellas, and stories.

  • I Flipping Love You

I Flipping Love You by Helena Hunting

I Flipping Love You by Helena Hunting is $1.99! Elyse reviewed this one and was ultimately expecting more humor:

In the end, I Flipping Love You was a decent contemporary if you like home renovation and beach settings, but it didn’t deliver the laughs I was craving.

    SHE’S GOT CURB APPEAL. HE’S A FIXER UPPER…

From New York Times bestselling author Helena Hunting comes I Flipping Love You, a love story about flipping houses, taking risks, and landing that special someone who’s move-in ready.

Rian Sutter grew up with the finer things in life. Spending summers in the Hamptons was a normal occurrence for her until her parents lost everything years ago. Now Rian and her sister are getting their life, and finances, back on track through real estate. Not only do they buy and sell houses to the rich and famous but they finally have the capital to flip their very own beachfront property. But when she catches the attention of a sexy stranger who snaps up every house from under her, all bets are off…

Pierce Whitfield doesn’t normally demo kitchens, install dry wall, or tear apart a beautiful woman’s dreams. He’s just a down-on-his-luck lawyer who needed a break from the city and agreed to help his brother work on a few homes in the Hamptons. When he first meets Rian, the attraction is undeniable. But when they start competing for the same pieces of prime real estate, the early sparks turn into full-blown fireworks. Can these passionate rivals turn up the heat on their budding romance—without burning down the house?

Ooh, I’ve been wanting to read The Cooking Gene for ages, but it’s almost never in at the library (an endorsement in itself?). One-clicking that immediately.

BTW, I just wanted to say that I love that the sale posts include cool and interesting books that aren’t romance. I’ve ended up finding out about/reading a lot of really neat stuff I might not have stumbled across otherwise.

  5. Karin says:

I recommend The Cooking Gene. Although some parts were repetitive and I skimmed a bit, it’s certainly worth reading, for food lovers, cooks, or anyone with an interest in Southern history. I learned a lot about spice mixes.

  6. @SB Sarah says:

@Annie Kate: Thank you! I’m so pleased to hear that you’ve found great books outside the romance genre! I think Amanda does an exceptionally careful and thoughtful job curating the Books on Sale posts, too, so thank you!
