  • The Duke Heist

The Duke Heist by Erica Ridley

The Duke Heist by Erica Ridley is $1.99! This is book one in a new series and was mentioned on a previous Hide Your Wallet. Elyse was super excited about the heist element, though I remember her mentioning that there’s a malecalico kitten and how that’s rather rare, though not impossible.

A NYT bestselling author kicks off a new Regency series of “irresistible romance and a family of delightful scoundrels” as a woman looking to recover a stolen painting accidentally kidnaps a duke instead. (Eloisa James)

Chloe Wynchester is completely forgettable—a curse that gives her the ability to blend into any crowd. When the only father she’s ever known makes a dying wish for his adopted family of orphans to recover a missing painting, she’s the first one her siblings turn to for stealing it back. No one expects that in doing so, she’ll also abduct a handsome duke.

Lawrence Gosling, the Duke of Faircliffe, is tortured by his father’s mistakes. To repair his estate’s ruined reputation, he must wed a highborn heiress. Yet when he finds himself in a carriage being driven hell-for-leather down the cobblestone streets of London by a beautiful woman who refuses to heed his commands, he fears his heart is hers. But how can he sacrifice his family’s legacy to follow true love?

  • My Fair Princess

My Fair Princess by Vanessa Kelly

My Fair Princess by Vanessa Kelly is $1.99! This book was mentioned in a previous Hide Your Wallet and is book one in a series. It’s a My Fair Lady retelling, which I know will appeal to some. Readers loved the enemies to lovers romance so much and many described it as a slow burn. However, some readers had some issues with the heroine’s characterization.

First, Vanessa Kelly brought readers The Renegade Royals. Now, in a delightfully witty new series, she introduces The Improper Princesses—three young women descended from royalty, each bound for her own thrilling adventure . . .

Despite being the illegitimate daughter of a prince, Gillian Dryden is happily ignorant of all social graces. After growing up wild in Italy, Gillian has been ordered home to England to find a suitable husband. And Charles Valentine Penley, the excessively proper, distractingly handsome Duke of Leverton, has agreed to help transform her from a willful tomboy to a blushing debutante.

Powerful and sophisticated, Charles can make or break reputations with a well-placed word. But his new protégée, with her habit of hunting bandits and punching earls, is a walking scandal. The ton is aghast . . . but Charles is thoroughly intrigued. Tasked with taking the hoyden in hand, he longs to take her in his arms instead. Can such an outrageous attraction possibly lead to a fairytale ending?

  • The Chase

    The Chase by Elle Kennedy

The Chase by Elle Kennedy is FREE! This is the first book in the new adult Briar U contemporary romance series. This technically a spin-off of the Off-Campus series and features secondary characters getting their own HEAs, but you don’t have to read the previous series for this. I’ve been on a new adult KU kick lately, so I may grab this one.

A sexy standalone novel from New York Times and international bestselling author Elle Kennedy

Everyone says opposites attract. And they must be right, because there’s no logical reason why I’m so drawn to Colin Fitzgerald. I don’t usually go for tattoo-covered, video-gaming, hockey-playing nerd-jocks who think I’m flighty and superficial. His narrow view of me is the first strike against him. It doesn’t help that he’s buddy-buddy with my brother.

And that his best friend has a crush on me.

And that I just moved in with them.

Oh, did I not mention we’re roommates?

I suppose it doesn’t matter. Fitzy has made it clear he’s not interested in me, even though the sparks between us are liable to burn our house down. I’m not the kind of girl who chases after a man, though, and I’m not about to start. I’ve got my hands full dealing with a new school, a sleazy professor, and an uncertain future. So if my sexy brooding roomie wises up and realizes what he’s missing?

He knows where to find me.

  • Dirty for Me

Dirty for Me by Jackie Ashenden

Dirty for Me by Jackie Ashenden is 99c! This is the first book in the Motor City Royals series. Ashenden’s books are definitely on the steamier scale and have darker or grittier elements. From what I’ve read, I’ve enjoyed her books, though this one is new to me.

Ezekiel “Zee” Chase has a complicated past. Born into a family whose wealth grew from the seedy world of big-time crime, he ran away as a teenager and made a home for himself on the streets of Detroit. By day, the mechanic works at a local garage. But by night, he throws down with the best of them in Detroit’s gritty underground fighting scene. With all those muscles, he’s never had trouble with women–until he meets one who challenges him to the greatest fight of his life. . .

Tamara Eliot is a hardworking corporate high-flyer who appreciates the finer things in life, from her expensive perfume to her designer handbags. More than anything, though, she likes to be in control–and when Zee explodes into her life, she feels anything but. He’s the definition of a bad boy: brash, fiery, and of course, irresistibly hot. And there’s a darkness about him that keeps her coming back for more. As Zee takes Tamara deeper into a world she never knew existed, she just might prove to be the one opponent he won’t be able to dominate–at least not without some pleasurable convincing . . .

I read a bit of The Duke Heist and I set it down and never picked it back up. Maybe I wasn’t in the mood to suspend my disbelief enough. Kindle keeps showing me the prequel for pre-order and it keeps grabbing my attention because it’s F/F and I goooo “ooooh”. So I keep meaning to read Duke Heist at least for the sake of the sequel.

  2. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I love Jackie Ashenden, but I do caution new-to-her readers that every MC in every one of her books comes from a dysfunctional background with absent/abusive/distant/dead parents. The dysfunction is never truly resolved (there’s never a scene where a character says to their parents, “You should have treated your child better”), but the MCs do learn not to fall back into destructive emotional patterns learned in their childhoods.

  3. FashionablyEvil says:

The anachronisms in THE DUKE HEIST really started to get to me and I’m not sure I would have bothered finishing it if one of my library holds had come in while I was reading. Also, the word heist is in the title! It’s not very heist-y.

  4. Susan/DC says:

Male calico cats exist but are rare and sterile, due to the process that makes a cat a calico (I believe it’s called Lyonization, which is fitting, although it’s named after geneticist Mary Lyon, not because it happens in a cat).

And I’m confused by a beautiful woman who is so striking that a duke is is immediately taken by her yet she’s also supposed to be completely forgettable. Those two things appear to be rather contradictory.

  5. WS says:

Male calico cats are XXY. The process that makes a cat a calico (fur pattern, not breed) requires the presence of 2 X chromosomes. So, not impossible, but not a common thing at all.

  6. MsCellanie says:

The Duke Heist was a DNF for me as well.
A lot of anachronisms, a lot of moments where the plot just didn’t make any sense, the characterizations were inconsistent from page to page, and the short cons weren’t any good, so it didn’t bode well for the long cons.
It seemed like some of the sequel bait might have been more interesting, but not enough to finish the first book.

  7. Star says:

Apparently not all male calicos are XXY! And neither are they all sterile, although the fertile ones are rare even among male calicos.

There’s a book called Cats Are Not Peas, which is mostly about male calicos but has a lot of other stuff about unusual genetic circmstances. The author, Laura Gould, became interested after adopting a male calico kitten. She was unaware that male calicos are rare until she took the kitten to the vet, who initially didn’t believe her when she claimed the kitten was male. It’s not a very current book, first published in the 90s and then rereleased in 2007 with some new content added (including some stuff about cloning), but still pretty interesting. She saves the mystery of her cat’s specific genetic situation until the end, so I won’t spoil it.

  8. Sandra says:

@Star: The opposite is also true. Calicos are usually female and gingers male. We had a ginger kitten show up on our doorstep. Took him to the vet and she and I both were astounded to discover that he was a she. I hadn’t even bothered to check. We all just assumed ginger = male. No idea if she’s fertile, since we erred on the side of caution and had her spayed.

But it still throws me out of the story when I come across a reference to a female ginger in a book, knowing how rare they are.

  9. flchen1 says:

@DiscoDollyDeb, so would you recommend Dirty for Me? I’m OK with some gritty, but am trying to gauge whether this would fit the bill 🙂

  10. LMC says:

I really enjoyed the DUKE HEIST and the quirky cast of characters that promise a fun series. I think the heroine intentionally makes herself forgettable, but of course, the Duke sees her beauty and her true self. The second book is F/F.
