  • Second First Impressions

Second First Impressions by Sally Thorne

Second First Impressions by Sally Thorne is $4.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and today’s deals have A LOT of romance. Elyse gave this one a B+:

The theme of slowly exiting your safe space when the time was right was so timely and on point for me. It was because Teddy was so kind and gentle with Ruthie in her journey to come out of her shell, and appreciative of who she was without wanting her to change (but supporting her desire to) that this book worked. When Teddy and Ruthie begin to fall for each other, it made total sense.

From the USA Today  bestselling author of The Hating Game and 99 Percent Mine comes the clever, funny, and unforgettable story of a muscular, tattooed man hired as an assistant to two old women—under the watchful eye of a beautiful retirement home manager.

Distraction (n): an extreme agitation of the mind or emotions.

Ruthie Midona has worked the front desk at the Providence Luxury Retirement Villa for six years, dedicating her entire adult life to caring for the Villa’s residents, maintaining the property (with an assist from DIY YouTube tutorials), and guarding the endangered tortoises that live in the Villa’s gardens. Somewhere along the way, she’s forgotten that she’s young and beautiful, and that there’s a world outside of work—until she meets the son of the property developer who just acquired the retirement center.

Teddy Prescott has spent the last few years partying, sleeping in late, tattooing himself when bored, and generally not taking life too seriously—something his father, who dreams of grooming Teddy into his successor, can’t understand. When Teddy needs a place to crash, his father seizes the chance to get him to grow up. He’ll let Teddy stay in one of the on-site cottages at the retirement home, but only if he works to earn his keep. Teddy agrees—he can change a few lightbulbs and clip some hedges, no sweat. But Ruthie has plans for Teddy too.

Her two wealthiest and most eccentric residents have just placed an ad (yet another!) seeking a new personal assistant to torment. The women are ninety-year-old, four-foot-tall menaces, and not one of their assistants has lasted a full week. Offering up Teddy seems like a surefire way to get rid of the tall, handsome, unnerving man who won’t stop getting under her skin.

Ruthie doesn’t count on the fact that in Teddy Prescott, the Biddies may have finally met their match. He’ll pick up Chanel gowns from the dry cleaner and cut Big Macs into bite-sized bits. He’ll do repairs around the property, make the residents laugh, and charm the entire villa. He might even remind Ruthie what it’s like to be young and fun again. But when she finds out Teddy’s father’s only fixing up the retirement home to sell it, putting everything she cares about in jeopardy, she’s left wondering if Teddy’s magic was all just a façade.

Hilarious, warm, and romantic, Sally Thorne’s novel delivers an irrepressibly joyous celebration of love and community for fans of 99% Mine and The Hating Game.

    When He Was Wicked

After a lifetime of smiling slyly as women chased him, Michael Stirling, London’s most infamous rake, took one look at Francesca Bridgerton and fell hopelessly in love. • The Radium Girls

The Radium Girls by Kate Moore

The Radium Girls by Kate Moore is $1.99! This nonfiction is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals. This is mainly about the lives of women who worked in radium dial factories during WWI. I know this has been mentioned before on the site, though hasn’t been featured on sale.

The incredible true story of the women who fought America’s Undark danger

The Curies’ newly discovered element of radium makes gleaming headlines across the nation as the fresh face of beauty, and wonder drug of the medical community. From body lotion to tonic water, the popular new element shines bright in the otherwise dark years of the First World War.

Meanwhile, hundreds of girls toil amidst the glowing dust of the radium-dial factories. The glittering chemical covers their bodies from head to toe; they light up the night like industrious fireflies. With such a coveted job, these “shining girls” are the luckiest alive — until they begin to fall mysteriously ill.

But the factories that once offered golden opportunities are now ignoring all claims of the gruesome side effects, and the women’s cries of corruption. And as the fatal poison of the radium takes hold, the brave shining girls find themselves embroiled in one of the biggest scandals of America’s early 20th century, and in a groundbreaking battle for workers’ rights that will echo for centuries to come.

Written with a sparkling voice and breakneck pace, The Radium Girls fully illuminates the inspiring young women exposed to the “wonder” substance of radium, and their awe-inspiring strength in the face of almost impossible circumstances. Their courage and tenacity led to life-changing regulations, research into nuclear bombing, and ultimately saved hundreds of thousands of lives…

There’s really a lot of good stuff on sale today! THE RIGHT SWIPE by Alisha Rai is $1.99

  2. SusanS says:

The Radium Girls was well-written, long, and thoroughly depressing. There was some justice for the girls and their families but it was too little and too late.

  3. Jill Q. says:

I loved, loved Second First Impressions. It has a little bit of ‘fairy tale/Rapunzel’ feel that just right to me and really helped whisk me away earlier this summer. And I say that as someone that didn’t like The Hating Game and had no interest in Sally Thorne’s 2nd book.

  4. Lostshadows says:

The Radium Girls is really good, but it’s a hard read, especially if you have issues reading about really horrifying injuries.

  5. Seconding Jill – I really loved Second First Impressions despite the fact that I didn’t personally click with Sally Thorne’s first book.

  6. Jcp says:

Am I the only one that is noticing that Amazons’s deals are not such daily deals any more and is changing their buying habits because of it? $3.99 or 4.99 for a book that was a KDD last month for a 1.99? I’m starting to look for publisher’s sales advertised by the author’s newsletter. I know everything is going up but Amazon can take a few more loss leaders per day and it won’t feel the pinch..

  7. Jcp says:

I forgot to add I also get Bookbub’s daily newslettere. Lots of fre books in there.

  8. Janice says:

Two of these were available from my library and are now on hold for my pick-up. Thanks for the recs!

  9. Lisa F says:

All of these are good, but Radium Girls knocked my socks off. Fascinating Horror, a youtube channel I follow which tastefully covers real-life historical calamities, just did a video about them.
